[Original Text] The Toad Qi-Flowing Method: Sit upright, automatically shake both arms, hold the breath for twelve cycles. It is highly effective in curing exhaustion (Xu Lao).
Lie on either side, hold the breath for twelve cycles, to treat phlegm-fluid retention that does not dissipate. If there is fluid disease on the right, lie on the right side; if on the left, lie on the left side. If it does not dissipate, use Qi to expel it.
At sunrise, noon, and sunset, during these three times, stand facing the sun upright, hold the breath for nine cycles, tilt the head back to inhale the essence of sunlight, swallow it nine times, which will multiply your Jing (Essence) by a hundredfold.
[Explanation] The Toad Qi-Flowing Method: In an upright position, shake both arms, hold the breath for twelve cycles. This method is very effective in treating deficiency-exhaustion (Xu Lao).
In a lateral recumbent position, either left or right, hold the breath for twelve cycles, to treat indissoluble phlegm-fluids (Tan Yin). If there is fluid disease on the right, lie on the right side; if on the left, lie on the left side. If phlegm-fluids do not dissipate, guide the Qi to expel them.
Choose the three periods of sunrise, midday (noon), and sunset. Stand upright facing the sun, hold the breath for nine cycles, raise the head and tilt the chin to inhale air, absorb the essence light of the sun, and swallow according to the number of Nine Yangs, which can make one’s spirit a hundred times more vigorous.
Summary:
The second item of this chapter has already been discussed in "Chapter 7: Door of Phlegm-Fluids," and the third item in "Chapter 12: Door of Accumulations." Here, we focus on discussing the Toad Qi-Flowing Method.
*Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (General Treatise on the Causes and Symptoms of All Diseases), "Volume 1: Prognosis of Wind Causing Inability to Move Body, Hands, and Feet," states: "Exert strength to shake both buttocks left and right, hold the breath for nine cycles. It cures buttock pain, fatigue, and wind-Qi inability to flow. Shaking the buttocks means alternating kicking, similar to saying 'jue' (topple; step). During the nine cycles, while prostrate, all do this, named the Toad Qi-Flowing Method." Thus, it can be seen that the Toad Qi-Flowing Method is a Daoyin (guiding and pulling) technique performed by ancient people imitating the movement of a toad swimming. The method is: Lie prone on a bed, support the upper body with both hands flat, then vigorously shake both buttocks left and right, holding the breath for nine cycles. Shaking the buttocks refers to alternately kicking the two legs, just like livestock kicking up their heels or a toad treading water—kick left nine times, kick right nine times. When kicking, coordinate with breathing to combine movement and stillness.
This section states: "The Toad Qi-Flowing Method: Sit upright, automatically shake both arms." The method is to sit properly and shake both arms as if a toad is swimming. This can be combined with the previous paragraph as two sets of movements: first shake the arms to flow Qi, then shake the buttocks and kick the feet to flow Qi, forming a complete Toad Kung Fu.
