(Treating wind-heat, dizziness and stuffiness, irritability)
Take twenty large green pears (Pyrus bretschneideri), ten pomegranates (Punica granatum), and three large sheng of bamboo sap (Dendrocalamus latiflorus juice).
Crush the pomegranates and green pears. Squeeze out the natural juice, clarify and filter it, then mix with the bamboo sap. Take five he as a dose, administered three times daily. If the pears are extremely large, use twenty; if small, use thirty.
Grains and Vegetables
Sesame (Sesamum indicum). It treats intestinal deficiency and emaciation, tonifies the Five Viscera, benefits Qi and strength, promotes muscle growth, fills the marrow and brain, strengthens sinews and bones, and clears deficient heat. Long-term consumption brightens the eyes, lightens the body, prevents aging, and prolongs life. Also known as Jusheng (Giant Sesame). Sesame with four ridges is called Huma (Black Sesame); that with eight ridges is called Jusheng. Tao Hongjing stated: "Among the Eight Grains, only this one is excellent." He also said: "Its flavor is sweet, belonging to the category of rice and beans." This is precisely Wuma (Black Sesame). The Jusheng used nowadays has stems and pods that are small, resembling sesame but with larger leaves. Its taste is extremely bitter, and its nature is very cold. Because it is bitter, it cannot be mixed with grains for food; because it is cold, it cannot serve as a tonic. Its leaves differ from sesame; they droop in shade and rise under intense sun. This must be a different plant, not Jusheng or Huma. Currently, people use it without realizing the error. One should correctly use black oil sesame: those with sweet flavor and four-ridged pods are Huma, while those with eight ridges are Jusheng. This aligns with the Ben Jing (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica) and one should not use the bitter and cold variety.
Meat
Mutton (Sheep meat). For men, consuming it damages Yang Qi; for women, it cuts off Yin Qi (referring to horned sheep). Sheep marrow tonifies deficiency and damage (brain marrow does not benefit humans when eaten).
Deer meat. Warm in nature, tonifies the Middle Jiao, strengthens the Five Viscera, and benefits Qi and strength. Hu Jushi said: "Deer are alert and fierce, eat good grasses, dwell on hills, and give birth near streams. Thus, they can be offered to spirits due to their purity." Deer commonly eat nine types of good grasses: Luchong (Allium victorialis), Luyao (Disporopsis pernyi), Baihao (Artemisia argyi), Shuiqin (Oenanthe javanica), Gancao (Glycyrrhiza uralensis), Shancang (Litsea cubeba), Ge ye and gen (Pueraria lobata leaves and roots), Qitouhao (Artemisia selengensis), and Ji (Capsella bursa-pastoris). By eating these nine herbs, deer gain the ability to detoxify, treat wind, and suppress Dan Shi (mineral pill) toxicity. Those taking Fuzi (Aconitum carmichaelii lateral root) should note that excessive consumption of deer meat and Fuzi leads to weakness. Avoid eating deer meat in the fifth lunar month; avoid smelling deer antler velvet.
Chamois meat. Warm in nature, tonifies the Five Viscera. Best consumed from the eighth to eleventh lunar months, surpassing mutton. After the twelfth lunar month, it may stir up wind and Qi, making it unsuitable for consumption.
Eel (Monopterus albus). Warm in nature, treats the five types of hemorrhoids, kills parasites, and tonifies Yang Qi. Consuming it three to five times naturally cures various diseases of the waist and kidneys. Five-colored eels additionally treat various disorders of the Dai Mai (Girdle Vessel) in women. Remove bones, chop finely, season with five flavors, stuff into sheep intestines, tie both ends, roast until cooked, cool down, then slice and eat.
Female chicken with yellow feathers. Warm in nature. Treats deficiency-thirst, frequent urination, and diarrhea. Tonifies the Five Viscera, benefits Qi and strength. Black chickens treat wind disorders.
Soft-shelled turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis). Neutral and tonifying. Clears stagnant heat from between bone joints. Not suitable for consumption in the fifth and sixth lunar months (there are cases where turtle shell powder ingested during these months, combined with yin-dampness exposure, supposedly transforms into a small turtle inside the body).
Pigs lack tendons, and chickens lack marrow; medicinal foods often lack these components.
Quail. Neutral and tonifying. Not suitable to be eaten with mushrooms. Pan-frying with ghee is excellent.
