To treat malaria in its early stage, characterized by more heat and less cold, this formula is suitable for separating and draining dampness.
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 1.5 qian), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 3 fen), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1.5 qian), Bai Fu Ling (Poria), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma) (each 8 fen), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 5 fen).
Take the above herbs, add two zhong of water, three slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and one Zao Da (Jujubae Fructus). Decoct until eight fen remains, and take orally.
If the previous prescription fails to stop the malaria after one or two doses, use this formula again:
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1.5 qian), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 8 fen), Bai Fu Ling (Poria), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (each 1 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 4 fen), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 1.5 qian), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 1.2 qian), Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Cao Guo (Tsaoko Fructus), Bing Lang (Arecae Semen) (each 7 fen).
Take the above herbs, add three slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), one Zao Da (Jujubae Fructus), and one and a half zhong of water. Decoct until eight fen remains, and take on an empty stomach. Re-decoct the dregs with water, and take before the onset of the malaria attack. If there is excessive thirst, add Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) and Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (each 1 qian). If it still does not stop, add Chang Shan (Dichroae Radix, wine-fried 1.5 qian) and Wu Mei (Mume Fructus) (two pieces), and take at wu geng (3–5 AM) on an empty stomach; the malaria will then cease. If it still does not stop, use the following formula.
Divine Formula for Interdicting Malaria:
Chang Shan (Dichroae Radix, fried with rice wine, 2 qian), Bing Lang (Arecae Semen, 1 qian), Cao Guo (Tsaoko Fructus, 1 qian), Wu Mei (Mume Fructus, two pieces), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 1 qian), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus, 1.5 qian).
Take the above herbs, add three slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), one Zao Da (Jujubae Fructus), eight fen of water, and seven fen of wine. Decoct until eight fen remains. Leave exposed to the dew overnight. Take facing east on an empty stomach before sunrise at wu geng. For the dregs, soak in wine and decoct. Take first when the malaria is about to occur; it will be effective immediately. This is because many people fear that Chang Shan (Dichroae Radix) is an emetic and rarely use it. However, they do not know that malaria is caused by phlegm-dampness. Chang Shan expels the phlegm through vomiting, and the malaria stops. After the malaria ceases, use the subsequent formula to regulate and tonify.
Regulating the spleen and stomach after malaria and clearing residual heat: Use Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction), doubling Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 1 qian), adding Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), and Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (each 8 fen). Decoct with Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Zao Da (Jujubae Fructus) and take orally (see Spring Category for the formula).
Treating spleen and stomach accumulation of phlegm leading to malaria with more cold and less heat:
Use Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 4 liang). With the peel intact, crush with water to extract one bowl of juice. Leave exposed to the night dew until dawn. Take cold on an empty stomach; it will stop immediately.
The method recorded by Zhou Youke for treating malaria states that regardless of whether the malaria is old or new, it can be cured in one instance. Choose any one of Tao (Peach Kernel/Fruit), Xing (Apricot Kernel/Fruit), Zao (Jujube), or Li (Pear); using only Pear is also good. The incantation says: "I come from the southeast, encountering a pool on the way. At wu geng, chickens and dogs are silent." Stand facing east at this time, eat the fruit in a clean room, then lie down peacefully. Avoid eating fruits, vegetables, fishy/foul-smelling foods, and hot-natured foods. (This method cures eight or nine out of ten cases.)
Dysentery is formed due to heat accumulation and qi stagnation, often triggered by excessive consumption of raw and cold foods in summer, manifesting as dysentery in autumn. The sages taught that regulating blood circulation allows pus in the stool to heal spontaneously, and regulating qi eliminates tenesmus (the feeling of incomplete defecation). This is a crucial principle.
