Autumn corresponds to Metal in the Five Elements, governing the energy of desiccation and killing. In autumn, Lung Qi (Lung Energy) is prosperous; the Lung belongs to Metal, and its flavor is pungent. Metal can overcome Wood. Wood corresponds to the Liver, which governs the sour flavor. Therefore, during autumn, dietary flavors should reduce pungency and increase sourness to nourish Liver Qi (Liver Energy). If Lung Qi is excessive, regulate the Qi to vent it. Following this principle leads to peace; violating it causes the Taiyin (Great Yin) mechanism to fail to gather, resulting in dry and distended Lungs.
In autumn, cold winds are bleak and rain is miserable; vegetation turns yellow and falls. Although elderly people have aging and weak bodies, their minds may remain as vigorous as those of the strong. In autumn, they often reminisce about past relatives and friends, leading to frequent sadness. After late autumn, when water becomes cold and grass withers, chronic conditions tend to recur. At this time, children should best attend to their parents' care, showing consideration morning and night and carefully observing their behavior and demeanor. If one notices an unhappy expression, one must employ various methods to persuade and comfort them, engaging their mind and spirit so that they forget their autumnal melancholy.
Newly harvested grains and cereals should not be given to the elderly immediately, as they may trigger chronic diseases. If it is known that a patient has chronic conditions prone to flare-ups at the end of autumn—such as phlegm and saliva with wheezing and coughing, wind-dizziness, bi-syndrome (painful obstruction), or accumulation; constipation, diarrhea accompanied by fatigue; or alternating chills and fever—one should select neutral medicines appropriate for the specific disease before the onset occurs and administer them in advance to prevent the illness.
The following decoctions and medicines suitable for autumn are listed below.
Qibao Dan (Seven Treasures Pill): Treats all types of diarrhea and dysentery in the elderly. For those suffering from chronic diarrhea and dysentery unresponsive to other treatments, this pill is invariably effective. It is particularly suitable for elderly patients with Splei-xie hua (Spleen deficiency leading to slippery discharge).
Prepared Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chenjupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) [each 1 liang], Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) [prepared with ginger juice], Nan Jiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) [each 3 qian], Boshang Liuhuang (Sulfur) [1 liang].
Finely chop the first seven ingredients, bake slowly over low heat, pound into powder, and sieve. Mix thoroughly with the sulfur powder. Decoct together, mix with rice vinegar, and divide into two doses. Take half a jin of white flour, knead well, and divide into two portions. Wrap the medicine in the dough like baking flatbread. Bake over moderate fire until the dough is cooked. Remove the dough, pound the pills in a mortar three hundred times, and shape them into pills the size of sophora seeds. For various diarrhea and dysentery, take twenty pills with rice soup on an empty stomach and at noon. For qi pain and indigestion due to retained cold food, take twenty pills with ginger-salt soup on an empty stomach and at noon. There are no contraindications for qi pain and retained cold. This formula is miraculous and unparalleled in efficacy.
Shepi Wan (Spleen-Nourishing Pill): Treats elderly patients in autumn suffering from cold deficiency of the zang-fu organs and unstable slippery diarrhea.
Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Hezi (Arecae Semen) [prepared, pitted], Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) [prepared with ginger juice], Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) [equal parts].

Weilingxian Wan (Clematis Pill): Treats elderly patients with lung congestion in autumn, intermittent phlegm-cough, gastric phlegm stagnation, and a sensation of blockage and discomfort.
Gan Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) [powder, 1 liang], Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus) [1 jin, plump and non-borer. Soak in river water, wash, remove black skin, rub soft in silver/copper vessel with river water, filter through silk to remove coarse residue, boil into paste], Weilingxian (Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma) [washed, cleaned of soil, dried, powdered, 4 liang].
