Astragali Radix (Huangqi) (use one qian if the heat caused by overwork is severe), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (roasted, five fen each of the above), Ginseng Radix (Renshen) (remove the rhizome), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui Shen) (washed with wine), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) (three fen each of the above).
Crush the above ingredients into coarse powder. Combine as one dose. Add two cups of water, decoct until one cup remains, remove the dregs, and take warm after breakfast. If the injury is severe, two doses will cure it; treat according to the severity.
When the Spleen and Stomach are deficient, due to improper diet and fatigue, Heart Fire becomes hyperactive and attacks the Earth position (Spleen/Stomach); subsequently, Lung Qi is affected by pathogenic factors. Astragalus (Huangqi) should be used in the largest amount, followed by Ginseng (Renshen) and Licorice (Gancao). When the Spleen and Stomach are deficient, Lung Qi is the first to be exhausted; therefore, Huangqi is used to benefit the skin and hair and close the interstices (Couli), preventing spontaneous sweating and damaging the Original Qi. For upper panting and shortness of breath, Ginseng (Renshen) is used to tonify them. When Heart Fire attacks the Spleen, roasted Licorice (Gancao) is required for its sweet flavor to drain the fire and tonify the Original Qi in the Spleen and Stomach. If there is urgent pain in the Spleen and Stomach along with great deficiency and abdominal contraction, it should be used in large amounts, as stated in the classics: "For urgency, use relaxation." Baizhu is bitter, sweet, and warm; it removes heat in the Stomach and benefits blood in the waist and umbilical region. When clear Qi from the Stomach sinks instead of ascending, Shengma and Chaihu must be added to guide it upward, leading the sweet-warm aroma of Huangqi, Renshen, and Gancao to ascend. This can replenish the dispersed Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) and solidify the exterior; it also relieves the contraction of the Dai Mai (Girdle Vessel). These two herbs are bitter and neutral, with thin flavors, representing Yang within Yin, guiding clear Qi upward. When Qi is chaotic in the chest, causing turbid and clear Qi to interfere with each other, Chenpi (without the white pith) is used to regulate it, assisting the ascent of Yang Qi to dissipate stagnant Qi, aiding the actions of other sweet and acrid herbs. If there is dry mouth and throat, add Puerariae Radix (Gegen). Due to Spleen and Stomach Qi deficiency, inability to ascend and float, and damage to the generating Qi by Yin Fire, Ying Blood (Nutritive Blood) is severely depleted, and Ying Qi fails to circulate. With blazing Yin Fire, latent fire in the blood slowly consumes it day by day, reducing Qi and Blood daily. The Pericardium and Heart govern blood; when blood decreases, the Heart lacks nourishment, causing mental chaos and vexation. This disease is named "Fan" (Vexation). "Fan" refers to mental confusion and restlessness. Therefore, acrid, sweet, and slightly warm agents are added to generate Yang Qi; when Yang grows, Yin also grows. One might ask: How can sweet-warm herbs generate blood? The answer is: Following Zhang Zhongjing's method, Ren Shen is used to tonify blood deficiency; when Yang Qi is vigorous, it can generate Yin Blood, further harmonized with Dang Gui. A small amount of Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai) is added to rescue Kidney Water and drain latent fire within Yin. If vexation persists, a small amount of Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdihuang) is added to tonify Kidney Water; when Water is abundant, Heart Fire naturally subsides. If Qi floats and the mind is chaotic, Zhusha Anshen Wan (Cinnabar Calming the Spirit Pill) is used to stabilize it, resulting in recovery.
