Huangdi asked Shaoyu, saying: "There is a person here who walks and stands alongside others. Their ages are equal, and the thickness of their clothing is uniform. Suddenly encountering fierce winds and heavy rains, some fall ill while others do not; some all fall ill, while others none fall ill. What is the reason for this?"
Shaoyu replied, "Why does Your Majesty ask so urgently?"
Huangdi said, "I wish to hear it in full detail."
Shaoyu said, "The green wind of spring, the yang wind of summer, the cool wind of autumn, and the cold wind of winter. These four seasonal winds cause diseases with different manifestations."
Huangdi asked, "How do the seasonal winds cause disease?"
Shaoyu said, "Those with yellow complexion, thin skin, and weak flesh cannot withstand the deficient wind of spring. Those with white complexion, thin skin, and weak flesh cannot withstand the deficient wind of summer. Those with bluish complexion, thin skin, and weak flesh cannot withstand the deficient wind of autumn. Those with reddish complexion, thin skin, and weak flesh cannot withstand the deficient wind of winter."
Huangdi asked, "Do those with black complexion not get sick?"
Shaoyu said, "Those with black complexion, thick skin, and firm flesh certainly will not be injured by the winds of the four seasons. However, those with thin skin, unfirm flesh, and uneven complexion will fall ill when exposed to deficient wind during late summer. Those with thick skin and firm flesh will not fall ill when exposed to deficient wind during late summer. But if those with thick skin and firm flesh are heavily affected by cold, both internally and externally, then they will fall ill."
Huangdi said, "Excellent."
Huangdi continued, "The ability to endure pain or not is not the distinction between courage and cowardice. A courageous person who cannot endure pain will advance when facing danger but stop when feeling pain. A cowardly person who can endure pain will fear upon hearing of danger but remain motionless when experiencing pain. A courageous person who can endure pain will not fear danger nor remain motionless when experiencing pain. A cowardly person who cannot endure pain, upon seeing danger and pain, will have rolling eyes and changing facial expressions, be too fearful to speak, suffer from Qi sinking and shock (there are missing characters in the original text), experience fluctuating complexions, appearing as if dead one moment and alive the next. I have seen such phenomena but do not know the cause. I wish to hear the explanation."
Shaoyu said, "The difference between enduring pain and not enduring pain lies in the thickness of the skin, the firmness or fragility of the muscle, and the tension or laxity of the tendons. This is not what is meant by courage and cowardice."
Huangdi said, "I wish to hear the origin of courage and cowardice."
Shaoyu said, "A courageous person has deep and fixed eyes, straight and upward-looking eyebrows, horizontal Sanjiao (Triple Burner) texture, an upright heart, a large and firm liver, and a full and expanded gallbladder. When angry, Qi becomes abundant and the chest expands; the Liver Qi rises and the Gallbladder Qi spreads horizontally; the eye fissures widen and the gaze lifts; hair stands on end and the face turns pale/cyan. This is the origin of the courageous person's nature."
Huangdi said, "I wish to hear the origin of the cowardly person's nature."
Shaoyu said, "A cowardly person has large but unfocused eyes, with Yin and Yang Qi out of balance. The Sanjiao texture is vertical, the diaphragm is short and small, the liver ligaments are lax, the gallbladder is not full and hangs low, the intestines and stomach are straight, and the hypochondrium is empty. Even when extremely angry, the chest cannot become full. Although Liver and Lung Qi may rise temporarily, Qi declines and sinks back down quickly, so they cannot maintain anger for long. This is the origin of the cowardly person's nature."
Huangdi asked, "When a cowardly person drinks wine, why do they become angry without avoiding courageous persons? Which Zang-Organ causes this?"
Shaoyu said, "Wine is the essence of water and grain, the liquid of cooked grains. Its Qi is fierce and penetrating. Upon entering the stomach, it causes stomach distension, and Qi rebels upward, filling the chest. This causes Liver Qi to float and Gallbladder Qi to spread horizontally. At this time, one is indeed comparable to a courageous person. However, once the Qi subsides, regret follows. Their behavior becomes similar to that of a courageous person, yet they fail to avoid danger. This is called 'Jiu Bei' (wine-induced recklessness)."
The two preceding sections are not continuous. The first part discusses people of five colors, while the second part discusses the nature of courage and cowardice. The first part discusses injury by external pathogens, while the second part discusses changes in internal emotions. The writing style is clear, lively, and pleasing.
