When one is slightly exposed to a gentle breeze, sudden headache and nasal congestion occur, accompanied by coughing, sneezing, yawning, rapid breathing, fever, and a floating pulse. The patient feels aversion to cold and experiences a sense of desolation and chill; this is termed Wind Injury (Shang Feng). Since the Lung governs the skin and hair, pathogenic factors transmit into the Lung Meridian, resulting in frequent coughing. Observation of the Three Passages (San Guan) at the tiger's mouth shows red-purple fingerprints that are long. The Yingxiang pulse (Renying Mai) at the left Cun position is large, indicating an exogenous syndrome. (Some argue that the Liver governs the observation of wind, so the Left Guan position should be examined.) There are cases of Wind Injury with spontaneous diarrhea, abdominal distension, and cold hands and feet; this indicates Spleen Deficiency and Timidity, requiring treatment to harmonize the Spleen while simultaneously dispersing the exterior. Cases presenting with tidal fever, excessive sleepiness, coarse breathing, vomiting, indigestion of milk and food, yellowish-white loose stools, and coughing indicate Cold affecting both the Spleen and Lung, leading to vomiting due to the inability to process food properly. If tidal fever occurs at fixed times or high fever persists without abating, it is certain to develop into Epilepsy (Xian Hou). If Wind Injury is accompanied by excessive tearing, hypochondriac pain, swollen eyes, and coughing, it indicates Wind Injury involving the Liver. A bitter taste in the tongue, reddish face, sweating, and coughing indicate involvement of the Heart. Yellowish complexion, swollen lips, reduced appetite, and nausea indicate involvement of the Spleen. Whitening of the chin, swollen eye orbits, upper asthma (rapid breathing), muscle tremors, and scorched hair indicate involvement of the Lung. Lower back pain with coughing indicates involvement of the Kidney.
The *Ling Shu* states: "Those with small bones and weak flesh are prone to cold-heat diseases." How can one distinguish the size of bones and the firmness or fragility of flesh? The zygomatic bone is the root of the skeletal structure; a large zygomatic bone implies large bones, and a small zygomatic bone implies small bones. Thin skin and flesh lacking distinct texture lines (meaning the flesh lacks clear myofascial separation), along with arms that appear soft and flaccid, are indicators. To determine the deficiency or fullness of marrow, one must examine the thickness of the arms; thin arms imply small bones and insufficient marrow. The Brain is the Mansion of Marrow. Fengchi (GB20) and Fengfu (GV16) internally connect to the brain. If brain marrow is not充盈 (full/abundant), pathogens easily invade to cause disease.
This formula treats Cough originating from the Spleen organ, pain in the right hypochondrium radiating to the shoulder and back, and Erythema (Fa Ban) caused by the Yangming Meridian.
Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (each 2 qian), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) (3 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
The right hypochondrium is the region of the Spleen and Stomach; the shoulder is the pathway of the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. Erythema arises from Stomach Heat. As the Stomach governs the muscles, Shengma and Gegen enter the Yangming Meridian directly to expel pathogenic heat. They are assisted by Shaoyao and guided by Gancao to harmonize Ying (Nutrient) Qi, ensuring no latent pathogens remain. For treating Erythema, this formula is only suitable when the rash is about to erupt. If used after the rash has already appeared, it will severely deplete the exterior defenses, worsening the erosion and ulceration of the rash.
