To subdue Yin fire and tonify Kidney water.
Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, stir-fried until brown) Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, soaked in wine and stir-fried, each 4 liang) Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, steamed with wine) Guiban (Testudinis et Carapacis et Plastrum, roasted with suet, each 6 liang) Ground into fine powder, mixed with pig spinal cord and honey to make pills, size of Sophora japonica seeds. These four herbs are all medicines for nourishing Yin and tonifying the Kidney. Nourishing water is the way to subdue fire; this is the principle of "strengthening the master of water to control the sunlight" (Zhuangshui zhizhu, yi zhi yangguang). The addition of spinal cord is to utilize its ability to connect with the Kidney and Mingmen, entering bone with bone and replenishing marrow with marrow, as the human body's Kidney and Mingmen are connected to the spinal column. This formula is suitable only for those whose Right Chi pulse is surging, large, and forceful.
This formula tonifies essence and blood, clears heat and moistens dryness, and is a sacred medicine for treating Heart-Kidney disorders.
Shudi (Prepared Rehmannia Root) Shengdi (Raw Rehmannia Root, both from Huaiqing, soaked in wine, sliced with a bamboo knife) Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) Fushen (Poria with Hostwood, each 3 liang) Guiban (Testudinis et Carapacis et Plastrum, skirt removed, roasted with suet) Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus, soaked in wine, pitted) Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus, from Ganzhou, washed with wine) Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, each 2 liang) Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex) Lurong (Cervi Cornu Degelatinatum, fire-burned to remove hair, roasted with suet, 1 liang) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, washed with wine) Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) Chensha (Cinnabaris, 1.5 liang, used as coating) Shenggancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Recens, 5 qian) Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, 1.5 liang, stir-fried with salt and wine until brown) Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, washed with wine, 1 liang) Ground into fine powder, made into pills with honey, size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, gradually increasing to 100 pills, on an empty stomach, washed down with warm wine or light salt water decoction.
Note: Elderly people may suffer from infertility or dislike white hair. Infertility is attributed to the Kidney, and white hair to the Heart. Why? The Kidney governs Essence; when Essence is abundant, conception occurs. The Heart governs Blood; when Blood is sufficient, hair remains black. If desires are endless, depleting the original true Qi; if worries are excessive, damaging the natural nature. The Heart is the Minister Fire (Junhuo); the Kidney is the Official Fire (Xianghuo). When Minister Fire moves, Official Fire rises accordingly; when Official Fire moves, the Heavenly Ruler (Shen/Spirit) becomes confused and restless. Therefore, ancient formulas attribute white hair to the Heart, because the Heart stores Spirit, Spirit attaches to Blood, and Fire disturbs Blood. When Heart Fire moves, Blood boils; when Blood boils, Spirit is unsettled; when Spirit is unsettled, dreams become chaotic, and beard and hair gradually turn white. However, within heaven and earth, there are only Yin and Yang and the Five Elements. Among the Five Elements, there are generating relationships and controlling relationships. Heart Fire flaming upward is due to the deficiency of Kidney Water, which fails to control it; thus, white hair is not solely caused by the Heart. Infertility is attributed to the Kidney in ancient formulas, because the Kidney stores Essence; when Essence is full, there are offspring; when Essence is deficient, there is no heir. However, the reckless loss of Kidney Essence is caused by the pressure of Heart Fire, or by the deficiency of Qi in both Heart and Kidney, failing to secure Essence. Thus, infertility is not solely caused by the Kidney. The Heart dislikes heat, and the Kidney dislikes dryness. This formula nourishes Blood and generates Essence, calms the Spirit and subdues Fire, clears heat and moistens dryness. It is applicable not only to white hair and infertility but also to palpitations, nocturnal emission and night sweats, dim vision and tinnitus, lower back pain and weak legs; it treats all these syndromes.
