(是所谓或从内或从外也。阳受之则入六腑,阴受之则入五脏。入六腑则身热不时卧,上为喘呼;
The *Taiyin Yangming Lun* (Treatise on Taiyin and Yangming) states: Taiyin and Yangming are exterior-interior counterparts, belonging to the Spleen and Stomach meridians. Why do they manifest different diseases? Qibo replied: The locations of Yin and Yang differ; they alternate between deficiency and excess, and between reversal and compliance. Some pathogens originate from within, others from without. Since their origins differ, the disease names vary accordingly. (The Spleen Zang is Yin, the Stomach Fu is Yang. Yang meridians descend, Yin meridians ascend. Yang meridians govern the exterior, Yin meridians govern the interior. Hence, it is said that origins differ and disease names vary. In spring and summer, Yangming is in a state of excess while Taiyin is in deficiency; in autumn and winter, Yangming is in deficiency while Taiyin is in excess. This is the alternation of excess and deficiency. In spring and summer, Taiyin is considered "reversal" (ni) and Yangming "compliance" (cong); in autumn and winter, Yangming is "reversal" and Taiyin "compliance". This is the alternation of reversal and compliance.) Yang represents Heaven Qi, governing the exterior; Yin represents Earth Qi, governing the interior. (This is what is meant by differing locations of Yin and Yang.) Therefore, the Path of Yang tends toward excess, and the Path of Yin tends toward deficiency. (This is the alternation of excess and deficiency.) Those who contract thieving winds and empty pathogens are affected by Yang; those whose diet is irregular and daily routine untimely are affected by Yin. (This is what is meant by some originating from within and others from without. When Yang is affected, the pathogen enters the Six Fu Organs; when Yin is affected, it enters the Five Zang Organs. Entering the Six Fu Organs leads to fever and inability to lie down at proper times, with upward manifestations such as panting and calling out; entering the Five Zang Organs leads to fullness and obstruction, with downward manifestations such as undigested stool diarrhea (Sun Xie), which over time develops into Chang Pi (dysentery/intestinal inflammation). This is what is meant by different origins leading to different disease names.) Thus, the throat governs Heaven Qi, and the pharynx governs Earth Qi. Therefore, Yang meridians receive Wind pathogens, and Yin meridians receive Dampness pathogens. (This is due to the attraction of similar energies.) Thus, Yin Qi flows from the hands to the head, then descends along the arms to the fingertips; Yang Qi flows from the hands to the head, then descends to the feet. (This is the alternation of reversal and compliance. The *Ling Shu* states: The Three Yin Meridians of the Hand travel from the Zang organs to the hands; the Three Yang Meridians of the Hand travel from the hands to the head; the Three Yang Meridians of the Foot travel from the head to the feet; the Three Yin Meridians of the Foot travel from the feet to the abdomen. Their paths differ, hence there is alternation of reversal and compliance.) Therefore, it is said that Yang diseases, after reaching their peak upward, tend to descend; Yin diseases, after reaching their peak downward, tend to ascend. Thus, those injured by Wind are first affected in the upper parts; those injured by Dampness are first affected in the lower parts.
Why does the Spleen not govern a specific season? (The Liver governs Spring, the Heart Summer, the Lung Autumn, and the Kidney Winter. The Four Zang organs each have a corresponding primary season, but the Spleen does not have one.) The Spleen belongs to Earth, manages the Center, and nourishes the Four Zang organs throughout the four seasons. It presides for eighteen days during the last period of each season, and thus cannot exclusively govern a single season. The Spleen Zang constantly manifests the essence of the Stomach Earth. Earth generates all things and models Heaven and Earth, so its qi extends from the top to the bottom, reaching the head and feet. The Foot-Taiyin [Spleen] meridian is among the Three Yin meridians; therefore, Taiyin circulates Qi through the Three Yin meridians. Yangming [Stomach] is the exterior and the Sea of the Five Zang and Six Fu organs; it also circulates Qi through the Three Yang meridians. The Zang and Fu organs each receive Qi from Yangming via their respective meridians.
