Trembling of the head (Head shaking) fundamentally belongs to Wind (Feng), but is actually caused by Fire (Huo). As stated in the *Classic* (*Jing*, referring to *Huangdi Neijing*): "All wind diseases characterized by tremors and dizziness belong to Liver Wood." When Liver Wood encounters Wind, it shakes; this is due to excessive fire in the Liver channel generating deficient Wind. Therefore, elderly individuals or those recovering from illness who have undergone hardship often suffer from this condition. It occurs because Qi is deficient, and Fire attacks upward, causing movement. Thus, for children who shake their heads for three years without cessation due to illness, they can be cured by adding Heche (Placenta Hominis) to their regular medications.
The *Lingshu* states: "Wherever pathogenic factors reside, there is a deficiency." Therefore, when Qi in the upper part is insufficient, the brain feels empty and unsatisfied, the ears suffer from tinnitus, the head tilts painfully, and the eyes become dizzy. When Qi in the middle is insufficient, urination and defecation change, and the intestines suffer from borborygmus. When Qi in the lower part is insufficient, it leads to Wei syndrome (Flaccidity Syndrome) and Jue syndrome (Cold Extremities).
Pain in the brow ridge and orbital bones has two types, both belonging to Wind-Heat and Phlegm in the Liver channel, or manifesting as Wind-Phlegm; its treatment category is similar to that of Gout (Tongfeng). However, the Brain is the Sea of Marrow, and the Kidneys govern the bones. This is mostly caused by Kidney Yin failing to nourish the bone marrow, thereby failing to reach the Brain. Deficient Fire arises internally, while Cold binds externally; this is the origin of the pain. All high protruding bones and the areas where eyebrows grow are nourished by the essence and Qi of the Liver organ. If the essence and Qi of this organ are depleted, the hair, flesh, and bones in these areas will not be nourished. Thus, the *Lingshu* says: "At the upper part of the Foot-Taiyang [Bladder] channel, abundant Blood and Qi result in beautiful eyebrows." Since eyebrows have fine hairs, it can be seen that pain in the brow ridge indicates that Liver Blood has lost its ability to nourish it, and Kidney Water fails to nourish the bones. This foreshadows that within three years, a severe Wind disease (such as stroke) may arrive, indicating that since the root has been uprooted, external pathogens will take advantage of the deficiency. Treatment must primarily focus on tonifying the Liver and Kidneys, with a small addition of Wind-dispelling herbs to facilitate upward delivery. If one does not understand this and merely employs acrid-warm dispersing methods, the Yin channels will become increasingly deficient, exacerbating the harm.
Li Dongyuan said: "A heavy head, as if weighted down, is due to Dampness in the head; Hongdou San (Red Bean Powder) should be insufflated into the nose to induce sneezing." Because the pathology is located in the upper head, using drugs to attack the stomach and intestines would be punishing the innocent. Therefore, treating via the nasal cavity is like shooting at an object high above; one must use an arrow to hit it.
