It is Liangge San (Cool the Middle Burner Powder) with added Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma).
Qiaoflora (Forsythiae Fructum), Gardenia (Gardeniae Fructus), Rhubarb (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Mint Leaf (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Scutellaria (Scutellariae Radix), Licorice (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Mirabilite (Natrii Sulfas), and Coptis (Coptidis Rhizoma) are combined with a small amount of honey and ten leaves of Bamboo (Bambusa Leaves), decocted in water and taken warm.
Treats various heat accumulations causing teeth grinding, hematuria, stranguria, urinary retention, epistaxis, asthma, and cough.
Coptis (Coptidis Rhizoma), Phellodendron (Phellodendri Chinensis Cortex), Scutellaria (Scutellariae Radix), and Rhubarb (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) are used in equal parts. If the patient has spontaneous diarrhea, remove Rhubarb and add Gardenia (Gardeniae Fructus). This is named Zhizi Jinhua Wan (Gardenia Golden Flower Pill), also known as Ji Ji Jiedu Wan (Ji Ji Detoxification Pill). Grind into powder, form pills with water, size of small beans. Take 20-30 pills each time, washed down with fresh cold water.
Treats deficiency damage of true yin of spleen and kidney, severe depression of wind-heat in liver and heart, or exterior heat causing fever and aversion to cold, or interior heat causing restlessness, fever, thirst, or pathogenic heat at the half-exterior half-interior level, entering and exiting ceaselessly, resulting in alternating chills and fever; extreme deep accumulation of heat, extreme interior heat, yang extremity resembling yin causing shivering, abdominal fullness, restlessness, thirst, and dry heat, as well as all symptoms of wind-heat congestion. Using this formula benefits both unblocking qi and blood.
Siler (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Angelica Sinensis (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), White Peony Root (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Bupleurum (Bupleuri Radix), Scutellaria (Scutellariae Radix), Ginseng (Ginseng Radix), Licorice (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Rhubarb (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) are each used in one tael. Talcum (Talcum) is used in six taels. Take 3 to 5 qian each time, decocted in ginger water and taken orally.
Note: In the previous formula, Rhubarb (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) drains damp-heat from the Yangming channel, expelling it via the stool; Talcum (Talcum) descends reckless fire of the Triple Burner, expelling it via urine; Scutellaria (Scutellariae Radix) cools the chest/diaphragm; Bupleurum (Bupleuri Radix) resolves the muscle layer; Siler (Saposhnikoviae Radix) clears the head and eyes; Ginseng (Ginseng Radix) and Licorice (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) tonify qi; Angelica Sinensis (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and White Peony Root (Paeoniae Radix Alba) nourish blood. It drains the yang of heart and liver, tonifies the yin of spleen and kidney, and contains no acrid-aromatic drying-hot herbs. It is truly an excellent remedy for wind-heat, dry-heat, and damp-heat complicated by deficiency. However, it is not suitable for cases where fire arises due to deficiency.
Treats non-thirsty urinary retention, indicating pathogenic heat in the blood level.
Anemarrhena (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (two taels, soaked in wine, dried in shade), Cinnamon Twig (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (two qian five fen), Phellodendron (Phellodendri Chinensis Cortex) (two taels, finely cut, mixed with wine, dried in shade, stir-fried).
Anemarrhena (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) and Phellodendron (Phellodendri Chinensis Cortex) both have yin natures. Since they correspond to Kidney Qi, they can tonify and drain lower jiao fire. Cinnamon Twig (Cinnamomi Ramulus) shares the nature of fire, hence it is said: "Use cold for heat" (using hot herbs to treat heat conditions, a counter-assistance method). All diseases located in the lower jiao typically do not present with thirst. Form pills with cooked water, take with boiling water.
