For Yang deficiency or Yin deficiency, by supplementing water and fire respectively to correct the imbalance and restore harmony, no adverse effects will occur. Excessive cold will further weaken the middle jiao, while excessive heat will further deplete the internal fluids. Beyond nourishing Yin, there is another method: tonifying and nourishing the Spleen and Stomach. Since Earth (Spleen) is the mother of all things, and Water (Kidney) is the source of all things, in treating deficiency, one should tonify that which generates me (i.e., Kidney to generate Lung Metal); in treating consumption (Lao), one should tonify that which assists me (i.e., Spleen to support Lung). When Earth is robust, Metal is generated; when Metal is abundant, Water flourishes; when Water flourishes, deficient Fire is controlled. However, tonifying the Kidney focuses on Yin essence, while saving the Spleen focuses on Yang Qi. Sweet-cold herbs for tonifying the Kidney are unfavorable to the Spleen, while acrid-warm herbs for invigorating the Spleen further injure Water. Therefore, it is crucial to not neglect supporting the Spleen while tonifying the Kidney, and to not forget nourishing the Kidney while tonifying the Spleen. Moreover, deficiency consumption with cough is a disease of Lung Metal. Yet, the Spleen prefers warmth and dryness, while the Lung prefers clarity and moistness. Protecting the Lung may hinder the Spleen, and tonifying the Spleen may hinder the Lung. In such cases, one must add a method of tonifying Fire within Yin-nourishing formulas. By tonifying the mother of Earth (Fire), Fire descends, and Lung Metal naturally becomes tranquil. Primordial Yang is stored and grasped, and the Spleen palace functions vigorously. The Spleen has the ability to generate the Lung, but the Lung lacks the power to assist the Spleen; thus, tonifying the Spleen is particularly important compared to protecting the Lung. Nourishing Water must simultaneously protect Fire. If the Spleen Yuan is solid, the source of transformation arises; if True Yang is secured, the Yin path grows. However, medicines can treat diseases and tonify deficiency, but they cannot change emotions and character. It is highly advisable to abstain from sexual desires, regulate diet, avoid anger, and stay away from worries, thereby eliminating consumption before it becomes entrenched. If symptoms progress to hoarseness and sore throat, emaciation and diarrhea, excessive phlegm, hoarse voice, sweating, sleeping on one side, anal sores, and pulses that are wiry, rapid, and thin, or floating, forceful, and large, such being the signs,
