The root of *Adenophora* (Wei Xian Gen) has two varieties; the larger one is called Da Wu Feng Cao (Large *Adenophora*), and the smaller one is called Xiao Wu Feng Cao (Small *Adenophora*). With Fraxini Cortex (Qin Pi, 秦皮) as a guiding herb, it primarily treats Bi syndrome (painful obstruction) caused by wind-dampness, leading to severe joint pain. It treats vomiting, diarrhea, palpitations, and abscesses, as well as scrofula (lymphatic tuberculosis) and swellings. It clears heat, eliminates flaccidity and cold extremities, expels water, and reduces acute edema. When taken by women, it can induce sterility. It also dispels symptoms such as protruding tongue, palpitations with shortness of breath, mania, and madness.
Patriniae Herba (Bai Jiang, 败酱) is named for its odor resembling spoiled bean paste. It resolves swelling and pus in carbuncles, disperses blood stasis, breaks up abscess formations, promotes labor while calming the fetus, removes maggots, hemorrhoids, scabies, and skin itching. It expels toxic qi and bi syndrome-related numbness, stops epistaxis (nosebleed), arrests hematemesis (vomiting blood), and drives out coagulated blood causing abdominal pain.
Acquiring the vigorous qi of the earth and slightly sensing the yin qi of heaven, its taste is strong but aroma light, hence bitter in flavor, slightly cold and slightly warm in nature, and non-toxic. Its seeds digest food, brighten the eyes, benefit qi, lighten the body, stop dysmenorrhea or amenorrhea in women, support impotence in men, resolve water retention causing distension, disperse blood stasis forming abscesses, treat traumatic injuries and fractures, wind-cold-damp bi syndrome causing heavy and painful loins and knees, and soreness/pain in bone joints.
Endowing itself with the clear yin qi of heaven and earth, it tastes sweet and pungent, is cold in nature, and non-toxic. Glehniae Radix (Tian Ming Jing, 天名精), also known as Di Song, Mai Jiang, Chan Chu Lan, Ha Ma Lan, Tian Man Qing, Tian Men Jing, Huo Lu Cao, and Liu Jin Cao, specializes in treating traumatic injuries and metal wounds, extracting toxins from malignant boils, descending blood stasis and blood masses, promoting urination to expel accumulated fluid, clearing heat accumulation to relieve thirst and irritability, driving out parasites, resolving damp-bi, expelling phlegm-saliva, stabilizing hematemesis and epistaxis, applying externally to treat snake and insect bites, and holding in the mouth to treat swollen throat due to strangling wind (acute laryngeal edema). The root is named Tu Niu Xi (Achyranthes Root), with identical functions. The seed is named He Shi (Nematode Worm Seed), suitable for pills and powders. It strongly kills parasites and expels toxins. For sudden heart/abdominal pain caused by roundworms or biting insects, mixing with fatty meat juice and taking it brings immediate relief. For arsenic poisoning where the gastrointestinal tract has not ruptured, sending it down with concentrated chive juice induces immediate vomiting.
Endowing itself with the qi of fire and metal, it tastes pungent, is warm in nature, and toxic. Both its flavor and aroma are strong, entering the Jueyin meridians of the hand and foot. The pungent-warm qi precisely supplements the insufficiency of Mingmen Fire (Gate of Life Fire), thereby eliminating various symptoms and strengthening tendons, bones, and yang function. Furthermore, the connection of Mingmen extends upward to the Heart; when Ministerial Fire is supplemented, Sovereign Fire becomes more vigorous, brightening the ears and eyes. Thus, it is most suitable for those with weak yang qi, but strictly contraindicated for those with yin deficiency and hyperactive fire.
Curculiginis Rhizoma (Xian Mao, 仙茅) is toxic. It primarily treats cold qi in the heart and abdomen preventing eating, cures spasmodic bi syndrome in the waist and feet preventing walking, addresses deficiency and exhaustion in men, urinary incontinence and sterility in the elderly, nourishes the skin, darkens beard and hair, strengthens tendons and bones, fills marrow, brightens ears and eyes, aids yang function, enhances spirit, and with long-term use, improves mental clarity and memory.
*Sheng Ji Zong Lu* records: Xian Mao Wan strengthens tendons and bones, benefits spirit, brightens ears and eyes, and darkens facial hair. Take two jin of Xian Mao, soak in rice washing water for five days to remove the red color, soak in water for three days in summer, scrape off the skin with a copper knife, mix with wine and steam, chop finely, and dry in shade. Take one jin of Goji Berries (Gou Qi Zi), one jin of Plantago Seeds (Che Qian Zi), twelve liang of Poria (Fu Ling, peeled), eight liang each of Fennel-fried Juniper Kernels (Bai Zi Ren, shelled), four liang each of dried Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di Huang) and prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang). Grind into powder, make pills with wine paste, size of wu zi (loquat seeds). Take fifty pills per dose, before meals with warm wine, twice daily. Any substance with toxic flavor must be pungent; any substance with toxic qi must be hot. Xian Mao is pungent and extremely hot in qi, so its toxicity is evident. Although it can supplement Mingmen, aid yang function, strengthen tendons/bones, and dispel wind-bi, etiologies differ, and cold/heat are distinct. A single error in application leads to disaster instantly. Moreover, among people today, eight or nine out of ten suffer diseases due to excessive fire, while less than two or three out of a hundred suffer from deficient fire. How can pungent-warm, extremely hot medicines be used routinely! All cases of yin deficiency with fever, coughing/vomiting blood, epistaxis, gingival bleeding, hematuria, bloody strangury, spermatorrhea, white turbid discharge, nocturnal emissions involving "ghost intercourse," kidney-deficiency lower back pain, weak legs/knees, defying fire flaming upward, dry mouth/sore throat, loss of willpower/impotence, depletion of water/essence, inability to conceive, elderly isolated yang without yin, urinary incontinence/loss of essence, blood deficiency failing to nourish tendons leading to hemiplegia/flaccidity, stomach-heat failing to digest grains, stomach-deficient fire causing hunger pangs, San Xiao (Three Wasting-Thirst) and Wu Dan (Five Jaundices), yin deficiency with internal heat, exterior cold with interior yang collapse, and extreme heat mimicking water—all these patterns are strictly contraindicated for this method.
