Cicada slough (Chan Ke) is formed by inheriting the residual Qi of Wood and Earth. Its flying and chirping obtain the clear Qi of wind and dew; therefore, it can enter the Liver channel to dispel wind and dissipate heat. It treats infantile high fever (Xiao'er Zhuang Re) and convulsive epilepsy (Jing Xian). It treats difficult labor in women (placenta retention), taking advantage of its symbolism of shedding and molting. Its chirping is clear and resonant, enabling voice production. Its nature is good at molting, enabling it to remove eye nebula (Yi Zhang). Its body is light and floating, enabling it to vent carbuncles and rashes. Its taste is sweet and cold, enabling it to eliminate wind-heat. It treats skin wind-heat, Tian Diao (convulsive crying), night crying, and other symptoms.
Cha Chan (Grasshopper Cicada) treats placental retention in postpartum women, promotes lactation, and induces abortion. It treats infantile convulsive epilepsy and night crying, driving out evil and expelling heat. Chan Hua (Cicada Flower) grows on top of the shell, resembling a flower crown, stopping Tian Diao convulsions, palpitations, and anxiety. Chan Tui (Cicada Slough) is the thin shell shed by the cicada, used to remove nebula invading the eye. The flesh-filled part takes advantage of its nature of good molting. Treating aphonia and night crying takes advantage of its day-chirping and night-resting nature. Good at venting smallpox/rashes takes advantage of its lightness and ease of penetrating the skin. Treating high fever and convulsive epilepsy takes advantage of its sweet, salty, and cold nature, which can disperse wind-heat.
Main Indications (Integrating Smallpox and Rashes): Cicada slough can vent unsmooth smallpox/rashes, detoxify, and dissipate wind-heat. It also brightens the eyes and treats itching caused by wind pathogen lodging in the skin. It can be used for severe redness, purple color, and heat; it is contraindicated in cold syndromes. It is also said that it can be used regardless of cold, heat, deficiency, or excess. For smallpox/rashes not rising on the head and face, use the head; on the feet, use the foot; on the body, use the body. It is a holy medicine for reducing heat and stopping itching. For inverted or black depressed lesions, wash with wine, grind into powder, and take mixed with decoction. Combined with Ginseng (Renshen), deficiency-related itching will heal spontaneously. However, it only moistens the skin and lubricates orifices; excessive use may leak Yuan Qi, leading to exterior deficiency.
Silkworm belongs to Yang. Its stiffened corpse combines the transformation of Metal and Water. Therefore, it tastes salty and pungent, has a slightly warm nature, and is non-toxic. It enters the Foot Jueyin (Liver), Hand Taiyin (Lung), and Shaoyang channels. Pungency can disperse wind-cold; warmth can unblock blood vessels. Pungency and warmth together can disperse wind and dry dampness. Thus, entering the Zang organs, it treats yin itching in pain, phlegm-wind stagnation causing throat obstruction (Hou Bi), mouth locking (Kou Jin), stroke with phlegm congestion, convulsive epilepsy, and night crying. On the skin, it treats ding sores and various ulcers, black nevi, and scars, improving complexion. Internally, it treats phlegm accumulation; externally, it treats all conditions caused by blood, phlegm, wind, dampness, and heat. Silkworm slough, like cicada slough and snake slough, functions according to its essence and benefits from the residual Qi of the silkworm, thus treating blood-wind diseases. Blood heat generates wind. Since women are primarily governed by blood, it is especially beneficial to women. In recent times, it is used to treat smallpox/rashes and remove eye nebula, following the same principle as cicada slough.
Yuan Can Sha (Raw Silkworm Feces) is the feces excreted by late-season silkworms. It tastes pungent and sweet, has a warm nature, and is non-toxic. Intestinal borborygmus is caused by the interaction of Water and Fire; sweetness harmonizes it. Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst) is caused by dryness-heat in the Middle Qi; pungency moistens it. Silkworms belong to Fire, eat but do not drink, so their nature is dry. Dryness overcomes dampness and dispels wind. Therefore, it is stir-fried until yellow, placed in bags, and soaked in wine to treat wind-induced flaccidity and paralysis, stubborn skin numbness, chronic cold and blood stasis in the abdomen, cold pain in the waist and legs. Stir-fried hot and applied as a compress, it treats hemiplegia and tendon-bone paralysis due to wind.
Yuan Can E (Raw Silkworm Moth) refers to the first generation of moths emerging from late-season silkworms. Their offspring emerging again are called "Er Can" (Second Silkworm). The moths of this second generation have the most licentious nature, mating immediately upon emerging from the cocoon. They taste salty and have a warm-hot nature. Thus, they strengthen Yin and benefit Jing (Essence), allowing tireless sexual intercourse. *Ri Hua Zi* states they treat impotence, stop seminal emission and hematuria, warm the Shui Zang (Kidney/Bladder), likely due to their licentious nature, yang-assisting properties, salty-warm flavor, and entry into the Kidney. Therefore, *Qianjin Fang* treats male impotence using two sheng of intact silkworm moths, removing heads, wings, and feet, stir-frying into fine powder, forming pills with honey the size of Sophora seeds. Take two pills nightly; one can engage in intercourse with ten women, but must be stopped with Calamus Wine.
Bai Jiang Can (White Stiff Silkworm) has special efficacy in expelling wind-warmth. It is essential for mouth locking and loss of voice. It is extremely effective in extracting ding toxicity. Applied externally for urgent swelling protrusion. It treats stroke with phlegm congestion, limb spasms, skin wind-itch, scrofula, various sores, infantile convulsive epilepsy and night crying, uterine bleeding with red and white discharge, stops yin itching, removes black nevi and scar marks, improves complexion, disperses wind-phlegm, resolves stagnant phlegm masses, helps open smallpox/rashes and throat obstruction, drives away residual pain after childbirth, and resolves Yin Yi (post-smallpox contagion) after Shang Han.
For Yuan Can E from the second generation, which is most licentious and mates immediately upon emergence, select unmated males. For medicinal use, stir-fry lightly until yellow, suitable for pills and powders. It treats impotence, allows tireless intercourse, benefits Jing and Qi, prevents premature emission, enhances fertility, applies to sores to remove scars, stops hematuria, and warms the Kidney.
Can Sha (Silkworm Feces) treats damp-bi, urticaria, and flaccid wind. It governs intestinal borborygmus, heat in the middle, and wasting-thirst. Stir-fried yellow and soaked in wine, it treats rheumatic diseases. Mixed with sesame oil and applied, it treats rotten margin wind-eye. Can Tui (Silkworm Slough) should be burned to ash for treating blood-wind, greatly benefiting women. It stops leukorrhea, metrorrhagia, red and white dysentery, removes intestinal wind bleeding, epistaxis, and ding distension. Ash applied to gum rot, added with Musk for gingival inflammation, rubbed on oral ulcers, or applied to affected areas. Also treats demonic wind-epilepsy; taken with wine, it cures instantly. Can Jian (Silkworm Cocoon), burned to ash and taken with wine, immediately penetrates abscesses (one cocoon per hole), similar to Mugwort shoots. If decocted and drunk, it kills parasites and stops diarrhea. Sao Si Tang (Reeling Silk Soup), buried in a jar deep in the soil for years, is urgently drunk for wasting-thirst. It draws clear Qi up to the tongue and mouth, and descends Ministerial Fire down to the Bladder.
Main Indications (Integrating Smallpox and Rashes): Bai Jiang Can belongs to Fire, contains Earth and Wood, and obtains Metal Qi becoming stiff without transforming. It must be white and strip-like, cleaned with wine and stir-fried before use. It treats cool wind-phlegm-heat, limb spasms, eliminates wind-heat, detoxifies and vents smallpox, harmonizes blood, fills pustules, stabilizes ulcers, and is extremely effective in extracting ding toxicity.
