Wenli (Clam) is born by inheriting the Yin Qi of water. Its taste is salty, its nature is cold, and it is non-toxic. It enters the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. The Five Zang Organs all belong to Yin. Anything that obtains the Yin of Water Qi has a moistening nature and assists in generating body fluids; therefore, it can moisten the Five Zang Organs, stop Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst syndrome), and stimulate appetite. Salty flavor can enter the Blood level and soften hardness; thus, it mainly treats blood masses in women and chills and fever caused by old accumulations (Lao Pi). Boiled consumption can sober up intoxication because it enters the Yangming Meridian and eliminates heat. However, after people consume Dan Shi (mineral pills), it causes abdominal knotting and pain. For edema due to Qi deficiency, use ten cloves of garlic mashed into a paste, add Ge Fen (Clam Shell Powder) to form pills the size of wu zi (loquat seeds). Take twenty pills before each meal with plain warm water. After finishing the course, urinating several buckets of urine will lead to recovery. For Bai Zhuo (white turbid discharge) and nocturnal emission, use one jin of Ge Fen and one jin of Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark) honey-fried, grind into powder, make water pills the size of wu zi. Take one hundred pills at an empty stomach with wine, twice daily. This is because Ge Fen is salty and can tonify Kidney Yin, while Huang Bo is bitter and descends Heart Fire to strengthen the Kidney.
Ge Qiao (Clam Shell) can remove old accumulations, stubborn phlegm, and blood masses, and clears heat with immediate effect. The meat, when boiled and eaten, can stimulate appetite, moisten the Five Zang Organs, stop wasting-thirst, resolve alcohol toxicity, treat chills and fever from old accumulations, and women's blood masses. Xian (Small freshwater clam) is small and black. Its meat resolves alcohol and dampness toxicity. Its yellow part removes heat qi, eye redness from seasonal epidemics, stimulates the epigastrium, suppresses Dan Shi toxicity, promotes lactation, promotes urination, and raw juice applied externally treats alopecia.
Muli (Oyster Shell) forms by condensing sea Qi. Its taste is salty, its nature is slightly cold, and it is non-toxic. It enters the Liver, Gallbladder, and Kidney meridians. It is used for clearing heat, softening hardness, resolving phlegm, dissipating nodules, and astringing to prevent collapse. Although it treats many conditions, its salty flavor is predominant, so its main functions are entering the Kidney and astringent actions. Combined with Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root), Huang Qi (Astragalus Root), Long Yan Rou (Longan Aril), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Fruit), Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphus Seed), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Bai Shao Yao (White Peony Root), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Huang Bo, and Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis), it treats night sweats due to Heart and Kidney deficiency. Combined with Huang Bo, Wu Wei Zi, Di Huang, Shan Zhu Yu (Cornus Fruit), Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry), Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed), Sha Yuan Ji Li (Astragalus Complanatus Seed), Lian Xu (Lotus Stamen), and Du Zhong (Eucommia Bark), it treats dream emission and seminal leakage. Adding Niu Xi (Achyranthes Root) also treats red and white turbidity. Combined with Di Huang, Huang Bo, E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Mu Er (Wood Ear Mushroom), Chao Hei Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma stir-baked black), Bai Shao Yao, Di Yu (Sanguisorba Root), Mai Men Dong, Xu Duan (Dipsacus Root), Qing Hao (Artemisia Annua Herb), Bie Jia (Tartar Testudinis Carapax), and Pu Huang (Typha Pollen), it stops Bing Zhong Xia Xue (metrorrhagia) and red-white leukorrhea in women. For deficiency consumptive night sweats, equal parts Muli Fen, Ma Huang Gen (Ephedra Root), and Huang Qi are ground into powder. Take two qian per dose, decocted in water. For hydrocele cysts, use two liang of Muli and one liang of Pao Gan Jiang (Prepared Ginger), finely ground, mixed with cold water for external application. The scrotum becomes hot like fire shortly; reapply when dry. Recovery occurs when urination improves. Another method uses green onion juice and wheat flour for mixing. Children do not use Gan Jiang. For Luo Li (scrofula) in men and women, use four liang of Muli Fen, three liang of Xuan Shen (Scrophularia Root), and one liang of Gan Cao (Licorice Root), made into pills with wheat paste the size of wu zi. Take thirty pills with wine, three times daily. Finishing the course eradicates the root, effective whether broken or unbroken. For continuous menstruation, grind Muli into fine powder, knead into a ball with vinegar, regrind into powder, mix with Ai Ye (Mugwort Leaf) powder boiled in rice vinegar to make a paste, form pills the size of wu zi. Take forty to fifty pills with vinegar-infused water per dose.
Muli Fen (Oyster Shell Powder) specifically enters the Kidney Meridian. Salt processing helps eliminate sores, prevents enuresis and seminal emission, astringes Yin sweat and night sweats, dissolves old phlegm and old blood, and treats Qi-deficiency leukorrhea. It treats Shu Lou (scrofula), Hou Bi (sore throat), cough, irritability, chest fullness, heart pain, and Qi stagnation. It can stop thirst, astringe the intestines, dissipate Ying (goiter), and clear turbid urine. Overall, it is sour, astringent, and slightly cold, serving as an agent for resolving phlegm, softening hardness, astringing, and consolidating. However, long-term use may damage Middle Jiao Yang causing internal cold.
