In cases of Qi deficiency, the initial onset is invariably characterized by fever, cold extremities, alternating hot and cold sensations, mental fatigue, pale muscles, reduced appetite, lethargy in the four limbs, quiet sleep, and normal, clear bowel movements and urination; this is undoubtedly a deficiency syndrome. The treatment method before the eruption of lesions involves administering Renshen Yin (Ginseng Decoction) with mild dispersing agents such as Zisu (Perilla Leaf) and Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root). After the lesions appear, Renshen Yin is still used, combined with mild ascending and dispersing agents such as Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome) and Jiegeng (Platycodon Root). Four days after the appearance of lesions, Ginseng preparations are heavily utilized, with prescriptions adjusted according to the disease; after seven to eight days when the pustules are full, Baoying Baibu Tang (Infant-Protecting Hundred-Tonics Decoction) is employed solely for nourishing Qi and Blood. In cases where lesions collapse or turn black and sunken, Muxiang Yigong San (Aucklandia Counterattack Powder) is predominantly used to conclude the treatment.
Regarding blood heat syndromes, the initial onset is invariably marked by high fever, red cheeks and flushed face, dry and brittle hair, irritability, thirst with desire to drink water, day-and-night crying, restless sleep, preference for cool places, and dark, scanty, painful urination; this is undoubtedly a heat syndrome. The treatment method before the eruption involves Shengma Gegen Tang (Cimicifuga and Pueraria Decoction) or Shengma Liqi Yin (Cimicifuga Regulating-Qi Decoction). Although both may be taken, Shishen Jiedu Tang (Ten-God Detoxification Decoction) is generally more stable. Three to four days after the lesions appear, once the heat subsides completely and the pustule formation phase begins, Taiyi Baohe Tang (Great Ultimate Harmonizing Decoction) is used with modifications. By the eighth or ninth day, after the pustules are full, Baoying Baibu Tang (Infant-Protecting Hundred-Tonics Decoction) is used for nourishment. If between the seventh and eighth days the lesions become purple-black and dry, or cyan-gray and black-sunken, formulas such as Deming Baixiang Zhuwei (Life-Saving Hundred-Auspicious Pig Tail) can be prudently selected. However, if black-sunken and dry-red lesions occur following diarrhea, Mu Xiang Yigong San (Aucklandia Counterattack Powder) is used for rescue.
As for heat-toxin stagnation and obstruction syndromes, the initial onset is invariably characterized by high fever, red cheeks and flushed face, dry skin and brittle hair, coarse breathing and distension, abdominal fullness and irritability, delirious speech, restless sleep, constipation, dark and scanty urination, facial edema and swollen eyes, excessive crying and anger; this is undoubtedly a heat-toxin stagnation and obstruction syndrome. The treatment method, if before the lesions appear, involves first taking one dose of Shengma Gegen Tang (Cimicifuga and Pueraria Decoction), followed by Qianghuo Sanyu Tang (Notopterygium Dispersing-Stagnation Decoction); three days after the lesions appear, when symptoms subside completely and the pustule formation phase begins, the treatment simply follows the method previously described for regulating blood heat.
