If Heaven and Earth lacked Water and Fire, how could they display the efficacy of creation? If the human body lacked Water and Fire (Kidney Yin and Kidney Yang), how could it sustain the way of generation? Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) is a small formula for tonifying Yin and Yang; Ba Wei Di Huang Wan (Eight-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) is a major medicine for rescuing Yin and Yang. Seeking Fire within Water, its brightness does not extinguish; seeking Water within Fire, its essence does not deplete. Tonification includes purgation, so long-term use causes no harm of excessiveness; purgation is less than tonification, so as pathogens are expelled, the effect of tonification becomes more apparent. Harmonizing and assisting each other, it suits all five Zang organs. Once the root is flourishing, the branches and leaves naturally grow lush. Its divine efficacy cannot be exceeded; attempting to go beyond this scope is like drawing legs on a snake (adding unnecessary details). Nowadays, people often choose tonic medicines and arbitrarily add other ingredients, causing guest herbs to outnumber host herbs, lacking specific responsibility, and the efficacy of the original formula retreats to a secondary position. Or, finding Di Huang too cloying, they reduce it, weakening the sovereign herb; or finding Ze Xie too draining, they reduce it, making the force weak; or using He Shou Wu alongside as a sovereign herb, resulting in one herb having two sovereign roles, leaving confusion about which to follow. Or adding Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), where kidney-tonifying herbs reach Yin meridians and qi-tonifying herbs travel through Yang aspects, mutually restraining without finding their proper place, instead disturbing floating deficient Yang without guiding it back to the meridians. Furthermore, adding Suan Zao Ren, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Bai Zhu to simultaneously benefit Heart and Spleen ignores that the blood and essence tonification of Shu Di Huang especially relies on the astringent property of Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus) to consolidate it. As for Dang Gui, its pungent flavor disperses, making it a Blood-level herb rather than an Essence-level herb. Astringent gathering and pungent dispersing are vastly different; Blood and Yin Essence also have distinctions. Moreover, Liu Wei and Ba Wei formulas each possess Yin and Yang, allowing Water and Fire to steam and brew into Essence and Blood. People still complain about Fu Ling (Poria) and Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma) being too draining and drying, let alone Bai Zhu whose function is drying and acts solely on the Spleen and Stomach. Adding it would consume the steaming and brewing momentum, from where would True Yin arise? As for Suan Zao Ren, it is a herb for the Qi aspect of the Upper Jiao (Heart and Spleen), completely unsuitable for the Kidney's Essence and Blood. Besides, one acts upward and the other downward; their dynamics cannot circulate together. The methods of taking medicine far after meals or before meals should naturally differ. If encountering different syndromes where the pure use of the original Di Huang formula is difficult, one may vary the proportions or add one or two auxiliary herbs suitable for the team, then the power of the original formula remains, and the assisting function of generating vitality becomes more evident. If one specifically deals with Heart and Spleen Qi and Blood, there are dedicated formulas within this school; why mix and clutter them here, bearing false fame while damaging actual efficacy? (Zhang) Based on my humble opinion, I respectfully attach ten modified formulas below for your esteemed review.
Er Miao Di Huang Wan (Two-Wonder Di Huang Pill)
Treats turbid urine caused by internal stagnation of Damp-Heat. Named so because it combines Er Miao San (Two-Wonder Powder) with Liu Wei Di Huang Wan.

Mao Shan Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 2 liang, cut into large pieces, soaked in rice wash water, sliced, mixed with black sesame seeds and stir-fried until yellow). If Dampness exceeds Heat, use 7 qian Fu Zi and 5 qian Huang Bo; if Heat exceeds Dampness, use 5 qian Fu Zi and 7 qian Huang Bo.
