All fish bladders can be processed into glue, but those from sea fish are mostly made from the swim bladder of *Sciaenidae* (Sturgeon/Croaker family), while those from river fish are mostly made from the intestines of cuttlefish. Generally, they are all yin-nourishing and deficiency-supplementing substances.
Bladder glue treats red and white leukorrhea with metrorrhagia, bleeding due to fractures or injuries. Applied externally to yin sores, it treats blood stasis, hematemesis, kidney deficiency with lower back pain, spermatorrhea, and cloudy urine. It treats postpartum blood deficiency causing spasms and convulsions, and bi-syndrome pain in tendons and bones in deficient individuals.
Main indications (referencing *Dou Zhen He Can*): Crucian carp (*Carassius auratus*) treats weak stomach and anorexia, regulates the middle jiao, directs rebellious qi downward, addresses indigestion of water and grain, and stops diarrhea. It resolves toxin from smallpox/rash.
Main indications (referencing *Dou Zhen He Can*): Decoction of snakehead fish (*Channa argus*) taken orally can treat chronic malaria; decoction used for bathing children can help disperse rash toxins.
Fuyi is also known as Tian Shu. It prefers to emerge at night to eat mosquitoes, so fine sand found in its feces consists of undigested mosquito eyes. Therefore, it treats brightening the eyes and curing blindness with nebula, based on the principle of sympathetic resonance of qi and form. Its taste is pungent and nature is cold, entering the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Pungency can disperse internal and external stagnation; coldness can clear blood heat and qi congestion, specifically serving to brighten the eyes.
Fuyi expels the five types of strangury and promotes urination, brightens the eyes to remove nebula and cloudiness, prolongs life when taken long-term without worry, induces joy and beauty. Applying its blood to the eyes improves night vision, allowing light perception in darkness. Its feces are named Yeming Sha (Night-brightening Sand). Burned to ash and taken with wine, it expels dead fetuses retained in the uterus. Stir-fried and mixed with wine, it treats scrofula extending to the neck. Crushed and mixed with a small amount of rice food, it treats infant "Wugu" malnutrition syndrome. Although it has many indications, its specialty lies in brightening the eyes.
Gejie acquires the qi of Metal and Water, tastes salty, has a neutral nature, and is slightly toxic. It enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, belonging to Yin. It can supplement the upper source of water (Lung), thereby nourishing both Lung and Kidney, eliminating labor-fever cough, removing pathogenic factors and evil qi, and conducting downwards to the Bladder, thus unblocking the water pathways. It originates from Hengzhou, Guangxi. Males and females call to each other for days, mating by embracing and falling to the ground; humans can catch them unaware. Even if separated by hand after death, they do not open. They are wrapped tightly in cooked straw, steamed, sun-dried, and sold, refined into sexual tonics with great efficacy. Commonly caught specimens, regardless of sex, serve only as miscellaneous medicines. Its nature most protects its tail; seeing humans attempt to take it, it often bites off its own tail, causing humans to abandon it. Thus, retainers must keep the tail to maximize efficacy. The toxicity resides in the eyes. When used, eyes, scales, tail meat/hair, and abdominal hair must be removed. Soak thoroughly in wine, warm-dry between two layers of paper until dry, store in porcelain jars, hang in the east corner of the house for one night before use; this increases efficacy tenfold. Do not damage or remove the tail.
Gejie uses both male and female. It treats continuous cough due to Lung deficiency, bloody expectoration in Lung萎 (Lung atrophy/withering), expels corpse-transmission tuberculosis, removes evil spirits attaching to the body, regulates menstruation, and promotes urination.
