If malaria persists for a long time without healing, it becomes phlegm-malaria (Tan Nue), often forming accumulations (Pi Ji). The mass formed under the left hypochondrium is called "Malaria Mother" (Nue Mu). Malaria belongs to the Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian; the Gallbladder and Liver have an exterior-interior relationship. Long-standing malaria involves the Blood aspect, which is also governed by the Liver. Therefore, Bie Jia (Tartaric Turtle Shell) should be used as the Sovereign herb, with Assistant and Envoy herbs administered according to the deficiency or excess of symptoms.
Prescription Composition: Bie Jia (Vinegar-processed), Cao Guo Ren (Tsaoko Fruit Seed), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), Bai Shao (White Peony Root), Hou Po (Magnolia Bark, Ginger-processed and stir-fried), Bing Lang (Areca Seed), Ju Hong (Tangerine Peel), Chuan Xiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger, 7 slices), Da Zao (Jujube, 1 piece), Wu Mei (Mume Fruit, a small amount). Decoct in water and take warm.
Another method: Use four liang of fresh ginger, crush it with the peel to extract one bowl of juice, leave it exposed to the night dew until dawn, and take it cold on an empty stomach. This greatly treats phlegm accumulation in the Spleen and Stomach, manifesting as alternating chills and fever.
Another prescription: Chang Shan (Dichroa Root) powder, two qian, soaked in wine and thoroughly stir-fried so that it does not induce vomiting. Siwu Mei Rou (Flesh of four Mume fruits), pounded into a paste and made into pills. This is a highly effective formula for arresting malaria attacks. People in the world fear that Chang Shan induces vomiting, unaware of its miraculous efficacy; it simply does not cause vomiting if thoroughly stir-fried.
Yet another method: Raw Bie Jia (Tartaric Turtle Shell) that has not been boiled in decoction, vinegar-processed until yellow, ground into powder, and bound with Mume flesh into pills. Take three qian per dose; it will surely be effective.
This is recorded in Zhang Zihe's *Ru Men Shi Qin* (The Professional Practices of Confucian Physicians). It uses spiritual methods to treat various types of malaria.
Incantation: "I come from the southeast, encountering a pool of water on the way. In the water lies a dragon, with nine heads and eighteen tails. When asked what it eats, it replies it only eats the malaria ghost."
Face east, recite the incantation once, and blow breath onto a fruit. Recite seven times and blow seven times. Have the patient eat the fruit at five geng (early morning, around 3-5 AM) on the day before the attack is due to occur, when chickens and dogs are silent. Place the patient in a clean room. Avoid raw, cold, and meaty/fishy foods. This method cures nine out of ten cases and can save people where medicine is unavailable. Any fruit such as peach, apricot, jujube, or pear can be used, but large jujubes (Da Zao) are particularly excellent.
Another method: At noon on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, take one peach kernel, split it in half. Write the character "Sun" (Ri) on one half and "Moon" (Yue) on the other. Add one seed of Bi Ma Zi (Castor Bean) and pound them together. Recite: "The Daoist methods need not be many, Southern Stars and Northern River combined. Just these two characters, subdue all demons in the world." After reciting, prepare fine powder of equal parts Cinnabar (Zhu Sha) and Realgar (Xiong Huang) to coat the mixture. Temporarily, males hold it in the left hand and females in the right hand, holding it through the ominous hour, ensuring the disease never recurs.
