Zhang Chongxu of the Ming Dynasty was from Wu County and was skilled in medicine. A Daoist priest, while using a bamboo tube to blow fire into a stove, accidentally inhaled a centipede into his abdomen, causing unbearable pain. Zhang crushed several eggs and instructed the patient to drink the egg whites. After a long time, the pain subsided slightly. He then had the patient swallow raw oil, resulting in severe vomiting, during which the eggs and the centipede were expelled entangled together. This is because the qi and nature of the two substances mutually restrain each other, and upon entering the abdomen, they combine into one. This incident is recorded in *Wu County Gazetteer*. Note: The Ming dynasty's *Collected Cases of Famous Physicians* by Hui also records a prescription: take one piglet, cut its throat to obtain blood, have the patient drink it all at once, and after a moment, administer a mouthful of raw oil. The centipede will roll in the blood and be vomited out. Subsequently, administer finely ground realgar mixed with water, and the illness will be cured. Centipedes are common in the South, and since every household uses bamboo tubes for blowing fire, such cases have occurred; thus, it is recorded here.
(Bingzhang) Note: Jiang Fang's method of cutting the piglet's throat to obtain blood harms living beings and is somewhat cruel. It is inferior to Zhang Chongxu's method, which has clear theoretical basis, certain efficacy, and greater convenience.
In the Yimao year of the Xianfeng era, Huangfu Xiang, a Shanshe (scholar-official) from my hometown named Min, suffered from swollen and rotting gums and cyanotic swelling of both legs. The condition was severe, and treatments by various physicians were ineffective. Wen Zuibai from Wucheng diagnosed the disease as "Green Leg and Gum Gangrene" (Qingtui Yagan). He stated that no medication was necessary; only drinking horse milk would cure it. Following this advice, Huangfu recovered completely within one month. Another woman surnamed Dai presented with identical symptoms and was also cured by drinking horse milk. Note: This syndrome appears in Volume 84 of the Imperially Commissioned *Medical Standard Gold Mirror* (Yizong Jinjian) under the Department of Surgery. Tang Lidie of Changzhou also mentioned it in his work *Yi Yi Bolun*. This syndrome is rare in my hometown, and few physicians are aware of it.
(Bingzhang) Note: Green Leg and Gum Gangrene was first discovered in the regions outside the Great Wall during the early Qing Dynasty and was included in *Yizong Jinjian* because drinking horse milk cured it. In recent years, it has also appeared in the Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions.
For patients suffering from red eyes, dip a finger in urine during urination and apply it to the eye. Close the eye and wait for it to dry naturally. Doing this three or four times a day leads to recovery. One must strictly wash hands and face to avoid infection due to uncleanliness. This prescription is recorded in *Medical Outline* (Yixue Gangmu) and is rarely seen in other books. It has been tested repeatedly with consistent success, making it a secret formula. Additionally, *Shishi Milu* prescribes washing the eyes with a decoction of three qian of white Tribulus (Bajili) for early-stage corneal opacities (xing), applied four to five times daily, which effectively clears the opacity. This prescription is also highly effective.
(Bingzhang) Note: For redness and swelling of the eyes, drinking a decoction of Isatis Root (Daqingye) reduces swelling and redness. Alternatively, drinking juice from fresh wild Amaranthus (Xianyeci) also resolves redness and swelling. If corneal opacities (xing) develop, add Equisetum ramosissimum (Muzecao) to the decoction. If cloud-like opacities (yunyi) form, add Cicada Slough (Chanyi) to the decoction and ingest. Both approaches yield good results.
