The *Erya* classifies mice under the chapter "Shi Shou" (Explanation of Beasts), considering them beasts because they have four feet and fur. The *Pi Ya* classifies mice under the chapter "Shi Chong" (Explanation of Insects), regarding them as the leaders of insects because they dwell in burrows. Regarding mouse species, fourteen are recorded in the *Erya*. There are cases of same names but different species, such as the *Shi Shu* (Large-footed Mouse); one belongs to the category of *Yu* (a type of small rodent), and another to the genus *Shu* (Mouse). There is also the *Yi*, which shares a burrow with birds. As for the *Wu Shu* (Flying Squirrel) in "Shi Niao" (Explanation of Birds) and the *Shu Ye* in "Shi Chong", along with the *Shi Shu* of the *Yu* category, all bear the character "mouse" in their names. [Bingzhang] notes: Yunnan has a fragrant mouse (*Xiang Shu*), resembling a mouse, only about one cun long. Zhou Shuoyuan stated that there are fragrant mice in the western mountains of Mixian, smaller than ordinary mice; after death... The *Gu Hai Zhi* records: The fragrant mouse is as small as a split finger, burrows within osmanthus trees, moves on the ground as fast as an arrow, and is highly effective in treating hernia (*Shan*). It is also a variant of mice.
In medicinal materials, there is one called "Monkey Jing" (*Hou Jing*), which is the Tian Gui (menstrual blood/reproductive essence) of female monkeys. It is miraculously effective in treating amenorrhea (*Jing Bi*) in women. Li Xinheng, in *Jinchuan Suoji*, stated: At Zhengdigou in Dusong Xun, where mountains are high and forests dense, macaques abound in rock caves. Locals climb up by hanging to seek what is called "Monkey Jing," taking it to markets for trade, sometimes reaching hundreds of jin. This can supplement the omissions in various Bencao (Materia Medica) texts.
[Bingzhang] notes: "Monkey Jing" is also known as Shen Hong. The *Shiyi* records: In places where wild monkeys gather in deep mountains, seekers often find it among grass. It is purple-black and clumped, mixed with fine grass debris, representing the dried menstrual blood of female monkeys. Those produced in Guangxi are of good quality and are very effective in treating Gan Xue Lao (Dry Blood Consumption/Labor due to blood stasis).
The character in the *Erya* should be read as "Shi". Guo Pu's commentary states: In the Jiangdong region today, the largest one, three chi long, is called Dang Shi. Shao’s *Zhengyi* considers it to be the Tenualosa reevesii (Shi Yu / Whitebait). A poem by the Hanlin Academician from Hangzhou reads: "Silver light at the grand banquet urges early departure; the taste of Shi fish arrives late in family gifts." The description of objects is particularly apt.
[Bingzhang] notes: Shi Yu Ye (the tissue around the eye of the Tenualosa reevesii) is taken off and dried in the shade without falling. Whenever a Ding Chuang (carbuncle/furuncle) occurs, apply the eye tissue to the carbuncle, cover with an external plaster for about eight hours, and the carbuncle will adhere and detach.
Qu Sou (Earwig), pronounced Jue Sou, is a name for an insect. The *Yupian* calls it , the *Bowei* calls it . Li Jingxi’s poem says "Wan Yuan Luan Qu Sou," where Yuan refers to this creature. My hometown colloquially calls it . It has two antennae, many legs, resembles a small centipede but with a shorter and wider body, hides in concealed places, and urinates onto human shadows, causing people to develop sores. The symptoms resemble heat rash (Re Fei) but are larger, accompanied by alternating chills and fever. The method in the *Qianjin Fang*: Draw the shape of an earwig on the ground, carefully scrape the soil from its belly with a knife, mix with saliva, and apply to the affected area. Applying it again leads to recovery. Recently, another prescription spread: At night, shine a lamp to project the shadow of the sore onto a wall, and pour boiling water upon that shadow to cure it. These are all methods of treating shadow with shadow, relying on the principle of resonance between similar energies, how miraculous!
[Bingzhang] notes: Such therapies belong to psychotherapy, similar to Zhuyou Ke (incantation therapy). However, they often yield miraculous effects. If analyzed according to scientific substance, they would all be considered metaphysical superstitions.
