The Upper Jiao (Upper Burner) is like a mist, the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner) like dew. Grain enters the Stomach, and through the Stomach Meridian, Qi and Blood are differentiated, circulating up and down throughout the body; the principles of Yin-Yang and Zong Qi (Pectoral Qi) are clarified herein.
To needle for Wind, select Fengmen (BL12) and Qihai (CV6). To needle for Water-Dampness, select Shuifen (CV9), located beside the navel. To needle for stagnation/clumping, needle the draining water points of the Large Intestine Meridian to drain water. To needle for consumptive disease (Lao), select Fengmen (BL12), as well as Gao Huang (BL43) and Danzhong (CV17).
To needle for deficiency, select Qihai (CV6), Dantian (CV4 or CV11 depending on context, here likely referring to lower abdomen points), and Weizhong (BL40), which are extraordinary points. To needle for regulating Qi, remember clearly the single point Danzhong (CV17). To needle for cough, Moxibustion must be used on Feishu (BL13) and Fengmen (BL12). To needle for Phlegm, first needle Zhongwan (CV12) and Zusanli (ST36).
To needle for vomiting, select Zhongwan (CV12), Qihai (CV6), and Danzhong (CV17), applying tonification. The treatment for Fanwei (inverted stomach/vomiting) and food regurgitation is generally the same. The subtleties of needling are known by few.
Contraindicated points for needling must be known first: Naohu (GV17), Huiyin (CV1), Shenting (GV24), Luoque (SI19), Yuzhen (GB9), Jiaosun (TE15), Xuanji (EX-HN1), Chengqi (ST1), Chengling (GV12), Shendao (GV11), Lingtai (GV10), Danzhong (CV17), Shuifen (CV9), Shenque (CV8), Huiyin (CV1), Henggu (KI12), Qichong (ST30), Shouwuli (LI13), Jimen (LR11), Chengjin (BL56), Qingling (HT8), plus Sanyangluo (TE5) on the arm. These twenty-two points are contraindicated for needling. Pregnant women should not have Hegu (LI4) and Sanyangjiao (SP6) needled.
It is also said that Stone Gate (Shimen, CV5) is contraindicated for both needling and moxibustion; if women undergo these treatments, they may become sterile for life. Additionally, Yunmen (LU2), Jiutui (CV15), and Lieque (LU7) treat external pathogenic factors, but needling should not be deep. If Jianjing (GB21) is needled too deeply, the person may faint. For Zusanli (ST36), if there is an acute excess condition, tonification will restore calmness.
There are forty-five points contraindicated for moxibustion: Chengguang (BL9), Yamen (GV15), Fengfu (GV16), Tianzhu (BL10), Suliao (DU26), Tongziliao (GB1, noted as Linqi in text), Jingming (BL1), Cuanzhu (BL2), Yingxiang (LI20), Heliao (LI19), Quanliao (SI18), Sizhukong (TE23), Touwei (ST8), Xiaguan (ST7), Jizhong (GV12), Jianzhen (SI9), Xinshu (BL15), Baihuanshu (BL30), Tianyou (TE16), Renying (ST9), Ruzhong (CN15), Zhourong (ST23), Yuanye (GB24), Jiutui (CV15), Fu'ai (ST16), Shaoshang (LU11), Yuji (LU10), Jingqu (LU8), Tianfu (LU3), Zhongchong (PC9), Yangguan (GV14), Yangchi (TE4), Diwu-hui (EX-LE6), Yinbai (SP1), Lougu (SP7), Yinlingquan (SP9), Tiaokou (ST38), Dubi (ST35), Yinshi (ST32), Futu (ST33), Biguan (ST31), Weizhong (BL40), Yinmen (BL37), Shenmai (BL62), Chengfu (BL36). These are all contraindicated for moxibustion.
