Favorable prognosis is indicated by a floating pulse in wind-stroke, while a slippery pulse suggests the presence of phlegm and qi stagnation. If the pulse is deep and slippery, it should not be treated solely as a wind disorder. Whether the pulse is floating or deep, if it is fine and deficient, one should support the primal qi and treat the phlegm, after which the wind can be dispersed naturally. A floating and slow pulse indicates a favorable outcome, whereas a rapid and urgent pulse portends death.
Sanhua Tang (Three Transformations Decoction)
Indicated for wind-stroke with internal obstruction manifesting as constipation and urinary retention.
Ingredients: Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (each 2.5 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Yu Jiayan stated: Zhang Zhongjing said, "When medicine accumulates in the abdomen without descending, one should fill the orifices to extinguish wind." Later generations did not understand this meaning; they always attempted to open the orifices to expel the wind, resulting in empty orifices and intensified wind pathogenic factors. How can the orifices remain secure under such circumstances? This formula, along with Yufeng Tang (Wind-Dispelling Decoction) and Da Qin Jiao Tang (Great Gentian Root Decoction), all originate from *Jiyao Fang* (Essential Formulas), purportedly authored by Tong Zhenzi, whose name is unknown. Thus, an obscure individual has confused the perceptions of later generations, which is akin to "one blind person leading many blind people."
Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Universal Rescue Powder) (Formula details see *Shifang*)
Indicated for various wind disorders causing convulsions, spasm of hands and feet, pediatric convulsive disease (pediatric epilepsy/jing-feng), constipation, sudden severe excess heat, muscle twitching, and all wind-related syndromes. (Note: This is a mild formula that treats both exterior and interior simultaneously.)
Yu Jiayan stated: Sweating does not damage the exterior, purging does not damage the interior; it may be taken frequently.
Qufeng Zhibao Gao (Wind-Dispelling Precious Ointment/Pill)
This formula adds Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) to tonify qi, Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) to nourish blood, Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) to clear heat, Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Quanxie (Scorpio), and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) to dispel wind. It is processed into honey pills the size of a tung nut. Take one pill per dose, swallowed with tea or wine at will. This is an unchangeable specialized formula for the wind-stroke category.
Sansheng Yin (Three Lives Infusion) (Formula details see *Shifang*)
Xue Shi stated: Add approximately 1 liang of Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) to guide the action of the herbs; only then can external pathogens be driven out and true qi supplemented. Otherwise, it will be not only ineffective but also detrimental.
Xixian San (Thin Saliva Powder)
Indicated for wind-stroke with locked jaw (kou-jin) and single or double throat swelling (dan-e/shuang-e, referring to tonsillitis/pharyngitis).
Ingredients: Badou Ren (Crotonis Semen), six kernels, each split into two halves; Yazao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina), 3 qian, sliced; Mingfan (Alumen), 1 liang.
First dissolve the Mingfan (Alumen), then add the other two ingredients and stir evenly. Wait until the alum dries and becomes powder. Use 3 fen to insufflate into the throat. For cases with excessive phlegm-saliva, administer 5 fen with Dengcao (Junci Medulla) decoction. (If the medicine reaches the throat, it induces vomiting; if it reaches the diaphragm, it induces purging.)
Another prescription: Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), fourteen kernels; Yazao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina), one piece, roasted. Decoct in water, add Jiangzhi (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens Juice), and take orally.
Liangge San (Cool the Diaphragm Powder) (Formula details see *Shifang*)
Jiawei Zhanshe Gao (Modified Tongue-Turning Ointment/Pill)
This formula adds Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), and Shishuang (Diospyros Kaki Frost), processed into honey pills the size of a tung nut, coated with Zhusha (Cinnabaris).
