Ya Men, Feng Fu, and Tian Zhu acupoints are supported; Cheng Guang, Lin Qi, and Tou Wei acupoints are level; Si Zhu Kong, Zan Zhu, and Jing Ming acupoints; Su Liao, Shu Gou, and Ying Xiang follow in sequence. Quan Liao, Xia Guan, and Ren Ying acupoints are to be avoided; Tian You, Tian Fu, up to Zhou Rong; Yuan Ye, Ru Zhong, below Jiu Wei; Fu Ai, seeking Jian Zhen behind the arm; Yang Chi, Zhong Chong, and Shang Shang acupoints; Yu Ji and Jing Qu proceed in order; Di Wu Hui, Yang Guan, and Ji Zhong are primary; Yin Bai and Lou Gu connect to Yin Ling Quan; Tiao Kou, Du Bi, and Shang Yin Shi acupoints; Fu Tu, Bi Guan, and Shen Mai meet; Wei Zhong, Yin Men, and Fu Cheng Shan ascend; Bai Huan Shu and Xin Shu belong to the same meridian. Moxibustion without acupuncture, or acupuncture without moxibustion, the *Needle Classic* (*Zhen Jing*) has repeatedly admonished for this; quack doctors using both simultaneously merely subject patients to the torture of branding irons.
Mingtang Measurement Method (Acupuncture and Moxibustion share this)
The classics state that the head has its own measurement standards. From the anterior hairline to the posterior hairline, it is measured as one chi two cun. If the anterior and posterior hairlines are unclear, measure from the center of the eyebrows to Da Zhui, totaling one chi eight cun for taking points.
Head Transverse Cun: From the inner canthus to the outer canthus is one cun, and this method is used for all such measurements. From Shen Ting to Qu Cha, from Qu Cha to Ben Shen, and from Ben Shen to Tou Wei, each is separated by one cun half; from Shen Ting to Tou Wei totals four cun half.
Back Longitudinal Cun: From Da Zhui to the tailbone, there are twenty-one vertebrae, with a total length measured as three chi. The upper seven vertebrae, each is one cun four li one hao high; the middle seven vertebrae, each is one cun six li one hao high; the fourteenth vertebra is level with the umbilicus, totaling two chi one cun one fen four li; the lower seven vertebrae, each is one cun two fen six li. The second row beside the spine takes points four cun away from the spine; the third row beside the spine takes points seven cun away from the spine.
Chest and Abdomen Measurements: The distance between the two nipples is measured transversely as eight cun, using this method for all such measurements. From Tian Tu to Dan Zhong, vertically measured as six cun eight fen. Descending one cun six fen leads to Zhong Ting acupoint; measuring up to the xiphisternal junction (Qi Gu) and down to the umbilicus totals nine cun. From the umbilicus to the pubic symphysis (Heng Gu), it totals five cun.
Transverse Cun of Hands and Feet Backs: Use the "Same-Body Cun" method. For men, use the left hand; for women, the right hand. Measure the inner width of the second joint of the middle finger, comparing the tip of the stalk heart to the transverse creases at both ends as one cun.
Point Location Method: When locating acupoints, some require the body to be flat and stable, while others require flexion or extension. For example, Huai Tiao is located by extending one leg and flexing the other. One must also consider the patient's age, body fatness or thinness, posture deviations, width, narrowness, length, and shortness, without being overly rigid. Master Dou said: Locating an acupoint requires referencing five points to determine one, ensuring accuracy. If locating points while sitting, moxa should be applied while sitting; if standing, apply while standing. Posture must be upright during sitting or standing; any movement will prevent finding the true acupoint. Moxibustion order should be Yang before Yin, Upper before Lower, Fewer before More. The base of the moxa cone should be three fen wide; if not three fen, the fire qi will not penetrate. Only on the head, face, and limbs can it be slightly smaller; for children, a size comparable to a sparrow droppings may be used. For robust individuals with deep-seated disease, the number of cones can be doubled; for the elderly and weak, halved. Bian Que's moxibustion methods involved cumulative applications reaching hundreds or thousands of cones, but the *Mingtang* mostly states needle depth of six fen and three cones of moxibustion. Moxibustion on the head, chest, diaphragm, and Jiu Wei should not be excessive; however, adjustments should be made based on the severity of the illness, avoiding rigidity. Therefore, even prohibited moxa points in the *Mingtang* allow for one to three cones. Thus, for wind striking the heart, Xin Shu may be moxibusted; one cannot adhere to a single rule. Lighting moxa cones with a fire lens or mirror is best; next best is burning clear hemp oil paper.
Regulation and Care Methods: Before moxibustion, avoid hot foods and take kidney-nourishing medicines. During moxibustion, select key acupoints and do not use too many, lest the Qi and Blood be unable to bear it. When moxibusting Qi Hai and refining the navel, do not lie down. Those with inherent excess fire, even if only moxibusting Qi Hai, must also moxa San Li to drain fire. After moxibustion, before the condition manifests, hot medicines are inappropriate; after manifestation, cold medicines are inappropriate. Always regulate and protect the Spleen and Stomach, waiting for spontaneous recovery, without needing external methods like wine and scallion warming. If manifestations include chills and fever resembling malaria, do not recklessly administer drugs. After scabs fall off, apply bamboo membrane paper for three to five days, then apply suitable medicinal plasters made from hemp oil, water powder, and decocted herbs. Change dressings daily if pus is abundant, every two days if scant, to ensure abundant drainage and rapid cure. Strictly regulate diet, avoiding raw/cold, greasy, fish/shrimp, bamboo shoots, and ferns; consume beef and young chickens in moderation. When flesh is regenerating, eels, loaches, waterfowl, pig stomach, and old duck may be consumed in moderation. Carefully avoid the influences of the Four Qi, Seven Emotions, and Six Desires; persist over time, and recovery is certain.
