This condition initially involves the contraction of external pathogens. Due to the failure to disperse the pathogens from the exterior in time, the pathogens become latent within the interior and remain in the Lung (Lung organ). The condition comes and goes intermittently, lingering for years. Additionally, there are various conditions such as Phlegm Asthma (Xiao), Salty Asthma, Vinegar Asthma, as well as Tian Asthma caused by excessive consumption of cold and raw foods and congenital deficiency in children. During attacks, a sound like that of a water chicken is heard in the throat; asthma originally results from invasion by phlegm pathogens. If one can induce vomiting to expel phlegm and disperse the exterior, while avoiding rich and greasy foods, the medication will be effective. Dingchuan Tang (Calm Wheezing Decoction) may be considered; the treatment must focus on resolving phlegm.
Dingchuan Tang: Bai Guo (Ginkgo Seed), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Su Zi (Perilla Fruit), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber), Kuan Dong Hua (Coltsfoot Flower), Ma Huang (Ephedra Stem), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Sang Pi (Mulberry Bark).
For Cold patterns: Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig), Zhi Ma Huang (Prepared Ephedra Stem), Fu Ling (Poria), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Berry), Ju Hong (Tangerine Peel), Chuan Po (Magnolia Bark), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), Bai Jie Zi (White Mustard Seed), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber). Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction) may also be considered.
For severe exacerbations: Ting Li Da Zao Tang (Descurainia Seed and Jujube Decoction).
For Deficiency of Righteous Qi (Zheng Qi): Shen Qi Wan (Kidney Qi Pill) with Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) and Niu Xi (Achyranthes Root) removed.
For Asthma complicated by Phlegm-Fluid retention: Zhen Wu Wan (True Warrior Pill); or Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction) with Ma Huang (Ephedra Stem) and Xi Xin (Asarum Root) removed, plus Chi Sha Tang (Brown Sugar) and Chao Shi Gao (Calcined Gypsum).
For Qi Deficiency: Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) modified.
Mr. Chen stated: Treatment should primarily focus on warming and unblocking the Lung and grasping the Kidney Essence. It is also necessary to tonify Middle Qi. Medications that are pungent and dispersing, bitter and cold, or those that resolve phlegm and break Qi are all unsuitable. Mineral drugs should be avoided; remember this.
Ancients discussed Malaria (Nue) without separating it from the Liver and Gallbladder, just as Cough is inseparable from the Lung.
Alternating chills and fever is called Malaria; this occurs when Righteous Qi (Zheng Qi) clashes with Pathogenic factors. Wind, Cold, Summerheat, Dampness, Food Stagnation, and Phlegm are involved, as well as Yin Deficiency combined with Qi Weakness. When occurring in the Yang aspect during the day, the pathogen is lighter; when deep in the Yin aspect at night, it occurs every other day. Early onset indicates involvement of the Qi aspect (Qi Fen), late onset indicates the Blood aspect (Xue Fen). Yang corresponds to Heat, Yin corresponds to Cold. When they merge, chills and fever occur; when they separate, the malaria stops (Summerheat/pathogenic qi moving together with Ying and Wei causes malaria; separation stops it). Ying and Wei interact with the pathogen. If the pathogen cannot overcome Righteous Qi, the disease recedes early (pathogen reaches Yang, disease retreats); if Righteous Qi cannot overcome the pathogen, the disease progresses late (pathogen sinks into Yin, disease advances). Generally, this is due to contracting pathogens where sweat does not excrete; closed sweat leads to Phlegm stagnation. Stagnant Phlegm fails to disperse, causing chills and fever. One must observe whether the disease is new or long-standing. New malaria should be purged and dispersed; long-standing malaria requires tonifying Qi and nourishing Yin. Without Phlegm or Food Stagnation, malaria does not form; in the initial stage, drink Qing Pi Ling. For spontaneous sweating, remove Ban Xia and add Zhi Mu; for no sweating, add Cang Zhu, Gan Ge (Kudzu Root). For excessive heat, add Huang Qin and Zhi Mu; for excessive cold, add Bo Gui and Gui Zhi. For headache, use Chuan Xiong, Qiang Huo, Bai Zhi. For irritability, thirst, and insomnia, use Fen Ge (Kudzu Root). In summer, use Xiang Ru and Bai Bian Dou; in winter with no sweating, use Ma Huang. If prolonged fatigue occurs, with fine and subtle pulses and night sweats, nourish Yin with Bie Jia, Dang Gui, and Bai Shao; tonify Qi with Ren Shen and Huang Qi is truly excellent. Qing Pi Yin remove Bai Guo and Nong Po, add Sheng Jiang and Da Zao, and the illness gradually heals. Also, "Malaria Mother" (splenomegaly/mass) forms in the left hypochondrium, causing excessive sweating and hypochondriac pain. Treatment should use guiding and resolving methods: what medicines? Use Bie Jia, San Leng, Peng Ze, and Fu Zi. Decoct with vinegar until uniform, add Hai Fen, Tao Ren, Qing Hao Ya, Shen Qu, and Hong Hua. Grind into powder and make pills, take three times daily; the mass will dissolve without difficulty.
For Summerheat-Heat, specifically regulate the Clear Qi of the Upper Jiao Lung.

Jiu Ni Tang (Save Reversal Decoction): Gui Zhi, Zhi Cao, Gan Jiang, Zao Zi, Shu Xi, Long Gu, Mu Li. This formula, removing Gan Jiang and adding Bai Shao, may be considered.
Long-standing Heart Meridian Malaria affecting Ying, inevitably causing irritability, thirst, and bleeding; suitable for nourishing Yin method.
Long-standing Lung Meridian Malaria damaging Jin (fluids), inevitably causing Stomach closure and Lung obstruction; suitable for clearing and descending method.
Mr. Chen stated: Long-standing malaria pathogens enter the collaterals, which belong to the Blood aspect; neither sweating nor purging can expel the pathogen. Zhang Zhongjing formulated Bie Jia Jian Wan to treat blood pathogens gathered in collaterals; over time, the blood moves downward. Warm malaria generally prohibits using Foot Six Meridian herbs like Chai Hu and Ge Gen; instead, use Gui Zhi Bai Hu Tang as the main treatment. Ancient texts refer to "Three Yin Great Malaria," taking the manifestations of the Liver, Spleen, and Kidney as key points. After Yang malaria, nourish Stomach Yin; after Yin malaria, regulate Spleen Yang. The Taiyang Meridian runs along the back; malaria causing back cold without involving the limbs indicates that Shaoyin Yang fails to nourish Taiyang.
