Wuling San (Formula see "Vomiting and Diarrhea"): When this formula is used to treat hernia, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) serves as the sovereign drug. Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) is replaced by Cinnamon Bark (Rougui), and additionally, Fennel Seed (Xiaohuixiang), Costus Root (Muxiang), Akebia Caulis (Mutong), Chaenomeles Fruit (Chuanlianzi), and Aconitum Lateralis Preparatum Radix (Fuzi) are added for efficacy.
Danggui Sini Tang, Tongmai Sini Tang, Qi Qi Tang (All see "Heart and Abdominal Pain").
Sini San: Treats cold extremities caused by the failure of Yin and Yang energies to connect smoothly, and also treats tenesmus following dysentery. The dosage of Allii Tuberosi Bulbus (Xiebai) should be significantly increased according to the method.
Composition: Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhishi), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) in equal parts.
Usage: Grind into fine powder. Take three qian per dose, mixed with rice soup, taken three times daily.
Baihu Tang, Chengqi Tang (Both see "Shanghan").
Guifu Bawei Wan (See "Phlegm-Fluid Retention").
Liuwei Dihuang Wan: Treats symptoms such as phlegmy cough with fever, mouth ulcers with hematemesis, turbid urination, spermatorrhea, and lower back pain, caused by insufficiency of Kidney Water and flaming up of deficiency fire.
Composition: Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shudihuang, 4 qian), Cornus Officinalis Fruit (Shanzhuyu), Chinese Yam (Huai Shanyao, each 2 qian), Poria (Fuling), Moutan Cortex (Danpi), Alisma Rhizoma (Zexie, each 1.5 qian).
Usage: Decoct in water. If the weight unit is changed from qian to liang, and refined honey is used to make pills the size of a large sesame seed, it is named Liuwei Wan, with the same indications.
Huanhun Tang: Used to rescue sudden death and death due to Ke Wu (sudden shock or evil invasion).
Composition: Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 3 liang, remove nodes), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 70 seeds, remove skin and tips), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 1 liang, honey-fried).
Usage: Take the above three herbs, add eight sheng of water, boil to obtain three sheng, filter out the dregs, and let the patient swallow the liquid in divided doses. It generally treats various cases of Ke Wu.
Note: Current conversion methods suggest that one liang equals slightly more than three qian, and one sheng equals one white porcelain cup. One prescription is divided into three doses. The Imperial Compilation "Yizong Jinjian" states: For stroke or Ke Wu presenting with constipation and interior excess, Zhang Zhongjing uses Beiji Wan. From this, we know that for exterior excess without sweating, Beiji Wan should not be used to purge the interior; instead, Huanhun Tang should be used to release the exterior. Purging the interior suppresses Yin energies, while releasing the exterior supports Yang energies. Ignorant practitioners do not understand this; they believe Mahuang is merely a diaphoretic herb entering the Taiyang channel. They fail to realize that if applied without warming covers to induce sweating, it becomes an herb entering the Taiyin channel to unblock Yang. When Yang energy flows freely, the Hun (ethereal soul) can return.
Baiwei Tang: Treats women suffering from Qi Jue or Blood Jue, presenting as if dead.
Composition: Cynanchum Atratum Radix (Baiwei), Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, each 2 qian), Honey-fried Licorice Root (Zhicao, 1 qian).
Usage: Decoct in water.
Puhuang Jiufang (Polygonatum Wine Formula)
Composition: Polygoni Tyri Spadix (Puhuang, 1 liang), Black Soybean (Heidou, 3 liang).
Usage: First stir-fry the black soybeans until fragrant, pour warm wine over them, take one cup of the wine.
Erschu Erchen Tang (See "Dampness Syndromes"): Treats phlegm generated by excessive dampness.
Pingwei San (For modifications, see this chapter), Wuling San (See "Vomiting and Diarrhea"), Fangfeng Tongsheng San (See "Stroke").
