Shaoyao Decoction (Cinnamon Twig and Peony Decoction): Treats dysentery with red and white discharge, accompanied by tenesmus (a feeling of incomplete defecation). It is applicable for patients within the first three days of onset.
Ingredients: Radix Paeoniae Alba (Shaoyao, 3 qian), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui), Radix Scutellariae (Huangqin), Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian), Fructus Aurantii (Zhiqiao), Areca Seed (Binglang), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gancao) (each 1 qian), Radix Aucklandiae (Muxiang), Cortex Cinnamomi (Rougui) (each 5 fen).
Usage: Decoct in water and take orally. Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) may be used to replace Cinnamon Twig (Rougui). This was a commonly used prescription by physicians at that time. Its general principle is that "moving blood allows pus in stool to heal spontaneously, and regulating qi relieves tenesmus," which is quite consistent with therapeutic principles. However, it is advisable to replace Cinnamon Twig with Dried Ginger, and Rhubarb (Dahuang) should be added when dysentery first begins.
Zhenren Yangzang Decoction (True Man's Nourishing Viscera Decoction): Treats chronic diarrhea and dysentery, prolapse of the rectum, and undigested food in stool.
Ingredients: Pericarpium Tsaoko (Hezi, roasted, 1.5 qian), Pericarpium Papaveris (Yangsuhke, honey-fried, 3 qian), Semen Myristicae (Roudoukou, roasted, 5 fen), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui), Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu, stir-baked), White Peony Root prepared with wine (Jiu Baishao) (each 6 fen), Radix Aucklandiae (Muxiang, 2.4 qian), Cortex Cinnamomi (Rougui, 8 fen, bark removed), Raw Licorice Root (Sheng Gancao, 1.8 qian).
Usage: Decoct in water and take orally. If visceral cold is severe, add Aconite Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, 1.5 qian). The brilliance of this formula lies in the relatively large dosage of Radix Aucklandiae, which prevents stagnation while astringing.
Ge Gen Huang Lian Huang Qin Gan Cao Tang (Kudzu, Coptis, Scutellaria, and Licorice Decoction):
Ingredients: Radix Puerariae Lobatae (Gegen, 4 qian), Radix Scutellariae (Huangqin), Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian) (each 1.5 qian), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gancao, 1 qian).
Usage: Use three cups of water. First, decoct Kudzu Root until reduced to one and a half cups, skim off the foam, then add the remaining herbs and decoct until seven-tenths remains. Take orally twice daily and once at night. This formula originally treats exterior syndrome complicated by heat-induced diarrhea with wheezing; borrowed for treating dysentery and hot diarrhea, it yields miraculous results.
Lizhong Decoction (See section on Heart and Abdominal Pain)
Xianglian Wan (Aucklandia and Coptis Pill):
Ingredients: Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian, 6 liang), Radix Aucklandiae (Muxiang, 1 liang).
Usage: Grind the two ingredients into fine powder, form pills with water, size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take 2-3 qian per dose, delivered with rice soup.
Taohua Decoction (Peach Blossom Decoction): Treats lower flux due to Shaoyin disease.
Ingredients: Halloysit Rubrum (Chishizhi, 1.6 liang, reserve 6 qian to grind into powder), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ganjiang, 1 qian), Oryza Sativa (Jingmi, 5 qian).
Usage: Prepare as one dose. Decoct in water, mix in the Chishizhi powder, and take orally. Divide into three doses throughout day and night. The pathology is in the Kidney; the Kidney is the root of congenital constitution. Only stone can supplement it. Zhang Zhongjing’s prescription here demonstrates unique skill akin to Nuwa mending the sky.
Danggui Sini Decoction (See section on Abdominal Pain) Canglin Decoction (i.e., Ginseng and Imperata Decoction plus aged rice 3 qian, See section on Plague) Xiao Chaihu Decoction (See section on Malaria) Dachengqi Decoction (Used for both typical and atypical conditions)
Yangzhi Jian (Mutton Fat Fritter) (from *Qianjin Fang*): Treats chronic dysentery that does not resolve.
Ingredients: Mutton Fat (Yangzhi, size of a chess piece), Beeswite (Baicha, size of a chess piece), Rhizoma Coptidis powder (Huanglian, 1 sheng, steeped in vinegar to extract thick juice), Honey (Mi, roasted, 7 he, decocted to yield 5 he), Prunus Mume Flesh (Wumei Rou, 2 liang), Ash of Human Hair (Luankui Hui, washed clean of grease, burned to ash, 1 sheng).
Usage: Combine the seven ingredients in a clay pot and simmer over boiling water. Stir until suitable for forming pills. Size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take 30 pills, three times daily. Dosage equivalent to the size of a chess piece or a square-inch spoonful. Zhang Shiwang stated: Mutton fat has a slippery and lubricating nature. *Qianjin Fang* uses it to treat chronic dysentery, specifically utilizing its lubricating property to unblock stagnation in deficiency. Later, there were recipes using mutton fat, Epimedii Folium (actually likely referring to other tonics or specific preparations mentioned in context, but text says E-Jiao/Donkey-hide Gelatin), beeswax, and Setaria Italica porridge, deeply embodying the intent of "tonification containing purgation" from Yan Di's *Shennong Bencao Jing*.
