Jiming San (Cockcrow Decoction) is the primary formula for treating Hong Kong foot (Gouty Arthritis/Jiaqi), and can be taken by both men and women.
Binglang (Arecae Semen, 7 grains), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, soaked), Zisuye (Perillae Folium, 3 qian each), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, 5 qian), Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus, 1 liang each), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 5 qian).
Add three large bowls of water, decoct until one small bowl remains, extract the juice; then add two more bowls of water, decoct to obtain another small bowl. Mix the two juices together. On the following day at the hour of Cockcrow (approximately 3-5 AM), take in divided doses of three or five times, cold. In winter, it may be slightly warmed. By dawn, black stools should be passed.
Cold-damp pathogenic qi adheres to the lower jiao and does not dissipate; therefore, Shengjiang and Wuzhuyu are used to dispel cold, while Juhong and Binglang are used to remove dampness. Although there are many herbs that dispel cold and remove dampness, these specific herbs excel in moving qi. Additionally, Zisuye acts as a qi-moving herb within the blood category; its pungent and fragrant aroma further assists qi movement. When qi is abundant, it moves swiftly, fulfilling the principle of "using qi movement to treat adherent pathogens." Furthermore, Mugua's sour flavor and Jiegeng's bitter flavor are added. As stated in the *Classic of Medicine* (*Huangdi Neijing*): "Sour and bitter flavors induce vomiting and purgation, belonging to Yin." This allows the cold-damp pathogenic qi to be resolved through slight sweating via the powerful qi-moving properties of these herbs. If resolution through sweating is incomplete, the remaining pathogens are expelled through the bowels, ensuring victory in treatment.
Why administer the medicine at the hour of Cockcrow? First, because the stomach is empty at this time, allowing the medicinal power to act specifically and directly. Second, because yang qi is flourishing at this time, allowing yang-natured herbs to gain momentum. Why must it be taken cold? Because dampness is a yin pathogen, and cold liquid also belongs to yin. Using yin to follow yin creates a unified approach, first luring the pathogen before attacking it.
Shenqi Wan (Kidney Qi Pill) (See Phlegm-Fluids section below)
Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) (See Gynecological Syndromes section)
Tianshui San (Heavenly Water Powder) (Also known as Liuyi San/Six-to-One Powder. Adding Zhusha (Cinnabar, 1 qian) makes it Yiyuan San/Profit Origin Powder).
Huashi (Talcum, 6 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 liang).
Grind together into powder. Take 3 qian with Dengxin Tang (Lampwick Decoction).
Baitu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) (See Plague section above)
Xiangru Yin (Mosla Decoction)
Xiangru (Moslae Herba, 3 qian), Nongpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 2 qian), Biandou (Dolichoris Semen, 3 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Adding Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) to the above formula creates Huanglian Xiangru Yin (Coptis Mosla Decoction), which treats severe heat from summerheat with thirst and irritability. Adding Fuling (Poria) and Gancao (Licorice Root) creates Wuwu Xiangru Yin (Five-Ingredient Mosla Decoction). Further adding Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) creates Shimai Xiangru Yin (Ten-Ingredient Mosla Decoction).
Dasuan Xinji Shui Fang (Fresh Well Water with Garlic Formula) (From *Zhongfutang*), a method for treating summerheat stroke.
Take a handful of Dasuan (Allii Sativi Bulbus), grind it thoroughly with fresh yellow earth from the field. Mix with fresh well water, filter out the dregs, and灌 (instill/administer) to the patient to revive them. For any case of summerheat or heatstroke, do not immediately give cold substances. Wait until the patient regains some consciousness before administering cold items, so that the middle qi can move without causing harm.
Tianzhong Ganni Quanqi Fang (Dry Mud Ring Around Umbilicus Formula from Field) (From *Zhongfutang*), an emergency method for treating summerheat stroke with fainting, dizziness, extreme restlessness, and impending death.
Take dry mud from fields, form a ring, and place it on the patient's abdomen. Have a young, strong person urinate into the mud ring around the umbilicus. The patient will revive after a short while. Afterward, do not drink cold soup; instead, consume warm rice gruel.
