Patients with sweating should not take Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction), and those without sweating should not take Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction). Now, this formula (Jiawei Xiangsu San, Modified Fragrant Perilla Powder) is used to replace the functions of the previous two formulas; its medicinal properties are stable and effective, which is also an excellent method in the medical field. It can be effective regardless of whether it is a true Shanghan (Cold Damage) in winter or a common cold caused by external pathogens in spring, summer, or autumn. However, Mahuang Tang should not be used recklessly during warm or hot seasons. Furthermore, individuals with weak constitution, deficient qi, and loose couli (skin pores and interstices) should not use it. Guizhi Tang is indicated for spontaneous sweating due to wind-stroke affecting the Taiyang Channel (Taiyang Disease); if misused for spontaneous sweating caused by interior heat, danger will ensue immediately. In cases of Summerheat-Wind syndrome, Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) may be combined with Guizhi; here, the dosage of Guizhi is light while that of Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) is heavy, so they do not interfere with each other. Moreover, in Spring Warmth or Summer Heat syndromes where pathogenic factors move from the interior to the exterior, presenting with symptoms such as aversion to cold being absent but thirst present, Guizhi should not be used. Instead, one should preferably use formulas like Chai Ge Jie Ji Tang (Bupleurum and Pueraria Decoction to Relieve the Muscles), or add Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) and Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) along with cooling herbs to this base formula. Generally speaking, all medication must conform to the seasonal climate, consider geographical conditions, observe wind patterns, assess the patient's constitution, differentiate meridians, inquire about past illnesses, and precisely match the syndrome before it can be considered a good prescription.
Zisuye (Perillae Folium, 1.5 qian), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) (each 1.2 qian), Zhigancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.7 qian), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Manjingzi (Vittaginis Fructus) (each 1 qian), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 0.5 qian), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 slices).
Crush these ingredients into one dose, decoct with water, and take warm. Cover slightly to induce mild perspiration.
If the aforementioned symptoms include severe headache, add Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 0.8 fen) and Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, 2 stalks); if there is spontaneous sweating and aversion to wind, add Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (each 1 qian). If treating during the transition between spring and summer, fearing the complication of warm-summer pathogens, avoid using Guizhi; instead, add Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1.5 qian). If accompanied by food stagnation and chest/epigastric fullness, add Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus), and Boluoz (Raphani Semen) (each 1.5 qian). If the Taiyang channel syndrome persists, accompanied by thirst and dysuria, this indicates Bladder Fu-organ syndrome; add Fuling (Poria) and Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) (each 1.5 qian). For wheezing and cough, add Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) and Qianhu (Peucedani Radix) (each 1.5 qian), and Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 7 kernels). For epistaxis or hematemesis, remove Shengjiang from the base formula and add Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Danpi (Moutan Cortex) (each 1.5 qian). For sore throat and swelling, add Jiegeng and Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus) (each 1.5 qian), and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, 0.5 fen). For constipation, add Boluoz and Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus). If accompanied by cold extremities and cold breath from mouth and nose, indicating concurrent Cold invasion, add Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex); although exterior syndrome exists, only use one or two dispersing herbs, not the entire formula. If complicated by Summerheat, add Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix). For dry retching, fever, and cough, indicating exterior fluid retention, add Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum) and Fuling (each 1.5 qian). For epidemic diseases, add Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 0.4 fen). For Plum-pit Qi (Meiheqi), characterized by a sensation of a foreign body in the throat that cannot be swallowed or expectorated, add Jiegeng and Sugeng (Perillae Caulis) (each 0.8 fen). For women whose menstruation has just begun, add Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Danshen. For postpartum exposure to wind-cold, add Heijiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Carbonisatum) and Danggui; reduce the powder dosage by more than half. For individuals with extremely deficient constitutions who cannot tolerate dispersing methods, employ a strategy of tonification combined with dispersion.
