(There is accumulated dampness in the interior; see the chapter on Taiyang Primary Disease for the formula.) Without undergoing purgation, epigastric fullness and obstruction arise spontaneously. The body does not feel aversion to cold, and clothing has not been changed. Frequent urination with dry stool indicates thirst and desire to drink water, which belongs to Yangming disease.
(There is deficient heat in the interior; see the chapter on Taiyang Complicated Disease for the formula.) Bitter taste in the mouth, dry throat, and rushing of hot qi. Panting with sweating and chest fullness filling the chest. After a single instance of purgation, hunger arises but food cannot be eaten easily. Restlessness in the chest and mental vexation (Aojiao) occur.
(There is excess heat in the interior; see the chapter on Taiyang Primary Disease for the formula.) Vomiting and purging injure Yin fluids, giving rise to thirst. Heat knotting in the abdomen is generally serious. Mental irritability, dry tongue, and only desiring to drink indicate that the method of Baihu Jia Renshen Tang (White Tiger Decoction plus Ginseng) can be employed.
(There is damp-heat in the interior.) The disease enters Yangming, the pulse is floating, there is thirst and desire to drink, and the heat is hard to cease. Furthermore, urination is difficult. Using Zhuling Tang (Polyporus Decoction) yields effective results.
Zhuling Tang: Thirst, mental irritability, and unrestrained heat. Water-fluid retention in the chest deepens the illness. Er Ling (Fu Ling [Poria] and Zhu Ling [Polyporus]), Huashi (Talcum), and Zexie (Alisma) can eliminate dampness; using Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin) alone transforms and nourishes Yin.
(There is dry-heat in the interior; see the chapter on Taiyang Primary Disease for the formula.) Differentiation of San-Yang He Bing (Combined Disease of Three Yangs) should be precise. Abdominal fullness, heavy body, and insensitivity of the mouth. Foul complexion, enuresis, and delirious speech. Cold extremities and sweating on the forehead.
(There is blood stasis-heat in the interior.) Urination is blocked, thirst leads to drinking liquids. Damp pathogen has long resided hidden in the abdomen. Only head sweating occurs, while the body has no sweat. Stagnant blood-heat will definitely cause jaundice.
Yinchen Hao Tang (Artemisiae Scopariae Fructus Decoction): Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Fructus) specializes in promoting urination; Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) eliminates irritability as an excellent assistant; further using Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) can purge turbidity. It is a miraculous formula for dissipating damp-heat.
(The exterior and interior are both hot; see the chapter on Shaoyang Primary Disease for the formula.) The pulse is floating, wiry, and large, indicating wind pathogen invasion. Abdominal fullness, heart pain, and blocked Qi mechanism. Lethargy, dry nose, inability to sweat, jaundice, tidal fever, and concomitant difficulty in urination (Long).
(Exterior and interior are disharmonious.) Chest and hypochondriac fullness and pain, poor appetite. Alternating chills and fever. Vertigo, bitter taste, and persistent palpitations. Vomiting, coughing, thirst, irritability, and difficult urination.
Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction): For the exterior, use Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix); for the interior, use Renshen (Ginseng Radix). To expel chills and fever, add Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix). For tonification, use Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus); for attacking pathogens, use Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma). Banxia assists both True Yang and Yin.
(Taiyang disease has not ceased, yet it abruptly enters Shaoyang.) Aversion to cold and fever manifest the disease pattern. Limb and joint irritability and pain, vomiting and rebellious Qi arise. Exterior signs remain unremoved, and epigastric knotting exists. This is a combined disease of two Yangs, requiring simultaneous clearing of both exterior and interior.
Chaihu Guizhi Tang (Bupleurum and Cinnamon Twig Decoction): Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Chaihu have miraculous efficacy in releasing the exterior. Gancao, Dazao, and Renshen are good at tonifying the Middle Jiao. Banxia descends rebellious Qi and stops upward surging; Shengjiang stops vomiting; Huangqin clears heat; Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) disperses wind.
