(Exterior syndrome unresolved with interior cold; formulas see Taiyang Complicated Disease chapter) Fever and headache, pulse is unexpectedly deep; the condition does not improve, body pain becomes harder to endure. Decocting Sini Tang (Four Reversal Decoction) only warms the interior; using this supports Yang and thereby suppresses Yin.
(Exterior syndrome unresolved with interior cold; all formulas see Taiyang Disease chapter) Diarrhea accompanied by distension and attacking pain; whole-body pain is urgent, urgently warm the Middle Jiao. Only after interior cold recedes should exterior release be considered; using Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) will surely achieve merit.
(Exterior resolved with interior cold; formula see Taiyang Complicated Disease chapter) When stool is free and thirst does not arise, true cold resides in the Zang organs, the disease is not light. Decocting Sini Tang (Four Reversal Decoction) solely warms the interior; in an instant, Yang is restored and major illness is pacified.
(Interior cold with heat above) Pathogen in the Stomach, heat in the Chest; once vomiting occurs and food cannot be retained, further compounded by abdominal pain which is particularly urgent, use Huanglian Tang (Coptis Decoction), the method can be followed.
Huanglian Tang (Coptis Decoction)
Treating heat with Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) yields observable efficacy; Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, Fresh Ginger) and Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) are good at driving out cold; Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) fully provide tonification; additionally, Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) alone vents Liver Qi.
Guizhi Jia Shaoyao Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction plus Paeoniae Radix)
(Case note: Exterior unresolved with interior deficiency; Guizhi Tang see Taiyang Disease chapter) The disease originally belonged to Taiyang but was incorrectly treated with purgation, resulting in abdominal fullness and intermittent pain. Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) should still be used to resolve the exterior; adding Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) for clearing wind [harmonizing Ying-Wei/alleviating spasm] is more suitable.
Guizhi Jia Dahuang Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction plus Rheum Radix et Rhizoma)
(Case note: Exterior unresolved with interior excess; Guizhi Tang see Taiyang Disease chapter) Taiyang primary disease is not suitable for purgation; when abdominal fullness, sudden palpitations, and excess-type pain occur, use Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) primarily to resolve the exterior, while Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) attacks the interior, yielding particularly miraculous effects.
(Exterior resolved with damp-heat in the interior; formula see Yangming Deficiency Syndrome chapter) After seven or eight days of Shanghan (Cold Damage), initially passing through; the body turns yellow like an orange peel, with significant internal stasis; urination is obstructed accompanied by abdominal fullness; after taking Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), the disease can heal.
(Exterior unresolved with blood-stasis and heat in the interior) Shanghan (Cold Damage) causes water and blood-stasis to stagnate in the chest; the body must turn yellow and stool is unobstructed [blocked]; since exterior pathology remains and generates interior heat, the method requires simultaneous attack from both interior and exterior.
Mahuang Lianqiao Xixiaodou Tang (Ephedra, Forsythia, and Red Bean Decoction)
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) releases the exterior; Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) attacks [lung qi/phlegm]; Chixiaodou (Phaseoli Semen Rubrum) and Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) unblock the water passages; Shengzibai Pi (Catalpae Cortex) clears Ministerial Fire; Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) are good at harmonizing the Middle Jiao.
Zhizi Bopi Tang (Gardenia and Phellodendron Decoction)
(Case note: Interior and exterior both have blood-stasis and heat) When the disease presents with body yellowing and fever; Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) removes irritability with miraculous efficacy; Bopi (Phellodendri Cortex) removes dampness and clears exterior heat; Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) harmonizes the Middle Jiao and further tonifies Spleen Qi.
