[Outline of Spasm Syndrome] Pathogenic factors invade the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel taking advantage of deficiency, manifesting as cold feet, feverish body, and stiffness in the neck. Sometimes the face and eyes suddenly turn red, with lockjaw, head shaking, and opisthotonos (backward arching of the back).
Gualou Guizhi Tang (Trichosanthes Root and Cinnamon Twig Decoction) Pattern
(Guizhi Tang is seen in *Shanghan Lun*) When all Taiyang symptoms are present, differentiation should be careful. The pulse is unexpectedly deep and slow, the body is stiff; when Roujing (Soft Spasm) has formed, what medicine treats it? Add Gualougen (Trichosanthes Radix) to Guizhi Tang.
Ge Gen Tang (Kudzu Root Decoction) Pattern
(Prescription is seen in *Shanghan Lun*) When Taiyang Gangjing (Hard Spasm) has already formed, Qi rushes upward to the chest with insufficient strength, lockjaw makes speech difficult, and urination is scanty; using Ge Gen Tang is more suitable.
Da Chengqi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction) Pattern
(Prescription is seen in *Shanghan Lun*) The patient feels chest fullness and cannot rest, has lockjaw and cannot speak, finds lying down difficult, and suffers from leg spasms accompanied by teeth grinding; this is the pattern for Da Chengqi Tang, which requires reference.
Danggui Buxue Tang (Angelica Sinensis Blood-Nourishing Decoction) combined with Guizhi Tang
(Condition attached, Guizhi Tang is seen in *Shanghan Lun*) Sometimes men suffer from Jinchuang (metal weapon wounds), or postpartum women have damaged blood and Qi. If spasm syndrome occurs concurrently, what medicine treats it? Add Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) to Guizhi Tang.
[Outline of Malaria] This condition involves the struggle between Yin and Yang. Summer-heat steaming causes sweating and disease generation; Cold stays in the stomach, intestines, meridians, and zang-fu organs. Once exposed to autumn wind, malaria forms.
Chaihu Gualou Ganjiang Tang (Bupleurum, Trichosanthes, and Dried Ginger Decoction)
(Condition attached) Malaria characterized by chills first followed by fever is named Hanmalaria (Cold Malaria). Treating with Gualou (Trichosanthes Fruit), Dazao (Jujube), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) is not difficult. Adding Gancao (Licorice) and Renshen (Ginseng) is excellent; using both Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) is indicated.
Chaihu Guizhi Ganjiang Tang (Bupleurum, Cinnamon Twig, and Dried Ginger Decoction)
(Condition attached) When Mumalaria (Mumu refers to a type of malaria with predominant chills) presents with more chills than fever, using Chaihu alone is most appropriate. Further add Fuling (Poria) and Renshen (Ginseng), combined with Gancao (Licorice), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), and Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig).
Baihu Guizhi Chaihu Tang (White Tiger, Cinnamon Twig, and Bupleurum Decoction)
(Condition attached) Wenmalaria (Warm Malaria) forms with fever first followed by chills. Shigao (Gypsum) and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) clear fire. Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) reach the exterior and should be used together. Jingmi (Rice) and Gancao (Licorice) tonify the middle, presenting therapeutic efficacy. (Danmalaria also uses this prescription.)
Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction)
(Condition attached) When Spleen cold with dampness belongs to deficiency, what medicine treats early-stage malaria? Use Renshen (Ginseng), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Licorice), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), and Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma); adding Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), and Dazao (Jujube) is suitable.
Jianwei Biejia Jian Wan (Reduced Formula Biejiajian Pills)
(Condition attached) When Numu (Malaria mass/enlarged spleen) forms and the disease deepens, use Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Taoren (Pruni Semen), Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), and Renshen (Ginseng). Tinglizi (Descurainiae Semen), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), and Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) are used concurrently, along with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), Gancao (Licorice), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix).
