[Danxi] Macules (fā bān) belong to wind-heat. Wind-heat, carrying phlegm, causes the disease, originating from the interior and manifesting on the exterior. One should refer to the principles of Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Windproof Unimpeding Powder), dispersing the pathogen through slight sweating; using purgation is not in accordance with medical principles.
(The formula for Fangfeng Tongsheng San is found in the Epilepsy section.)
[Luo Tianyi] For epidemic toxic nodules (shí dú gē da), Lulu San (Rhaponticum Powder) treats swelling and toxicity caused by accumulated heat in the zang-fu organs. Epidemic nodules present with severe swelling of the head and face, blockage of the throat making it difficult to swallow water or medicine, and all kinds of critical epidemic pestilences.
Lulu (Radix Euphorbiae Humifusae), Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) (each 1 liang), Lanye (Folium Isatidis), Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae) (each 2 liang).
Grind the above into coarse powder. Take 2 qian per dose, decoct in water. If swelling and heat are severe, add Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) 2.5 qian.
Xiaodu Wan (Disinfecting Pill) treats malignant symptoms of epidemic toxic nodules.
Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Muli (Concha Ostreae) (calcined), Baijiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) (stir-fried, each 1 liang).
Grind the above into fine powder, make pills with refined honey the size of a bullet. Dissolve one pill in fresh water and take orally. Time is not restricted; adding Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis) and Niuzibei (Fructus Arctii) decoction for administration is particularly excellent.
[Danxi] To treat pain caused by erysipelas (dān). Drink 1 sheng 2 he of Bianzhu juice (juice of Polygonum aviculare), and recovery will be immediate. If not cured, taking it again is effective. (In *Waitai Miyao*, Bianzhu refers to Pianxia / Polygonum aviculare.)
Internal injury macules are caused by extreme deficiency of stomach qi, leading to fire roaming on the exterior. The treatment should involve tonification to guide the fire downward. I once treated a middle-aged man who, after the ulceration of an abscess, suffered from fever and dry retching. Erysipelas appeared on his back. Various topical applications for erysipelas were used, and a knife was used to prick and bleed from each nodule, but the erysipelas did not recede. Later, Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), and Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) were added to a tonic formula to treat the vomiting, but without effect. Subsequently, only Renshen (Radix Ginseng) 0.5 liang, Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), and Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) 1.5 qian each were used, decocted thickly for one dose, which stopped the vomiting. After two or three doses, the erysipelas gradually eased, and the heat gradually decreased. After about fifty-plus doses, the heat was finally eliminated, and the spirit and qi recovered.
Yunqi Dan (Destiny Qi Erysipelas) all belongs to fire. The classics state: When Shaoyang governs the year, if the external pathogen prevails, macules and rashes erupt externally, forming erysipelas.
[Wuyi] To treat various swellings, erysipelas, and toxins. Fulonggan (Calculated Hearth Earth) in any amount, ground into powder, mixed with egg white and applied topically. Three times a day, very effective.
[Juan] To treat all types of erysipelas, use Jinhua San (Golden Flower Powder).
Yujin (Radix Curcumae), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Shanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Nuomi (Oryza Sativa Glutinosa).
The above seven ingredients in equal parts, ground raw into powder, taken orally with honey and water mixed.
*[Bencao]* To treat Yanhuo Dan (Smoke Fire Erysipelas). The eruption starts from the back, or the two flanks and both feet become red like fire. Use Jingtian Cao (Herba Sedis Acre) and Zhenzhu Mo (Margarita) 1 liang, pounded into a paste, and applied.
Another prescription: To treat Yinghuo Dan (Firefly Erysipelas) starting from the head. Pounded Shenhcao (Herba Patriniae) mixed with vinegar for application.
[Danxi] Erysipelas. Apply Landian (Indigo Naturalis); replace when the heat subsides. (*Zimu Milu*)
*[Zhouhou]* Dan is a malignant toxic sore, with colors varying among the five hues. Use Zhugen (Radix Boehmeriae Niveae) 3 jin, boiled in 3 dou of water to extract the juice, apply daily to the affected area.
[Shichuan] To treat Chi Dan (Red Erysipelas). Use the watery pulp from the center of cucumber seeds, remove the seeds, store in a vessel. When needed, use the water to smear the affected area.
Another method: Store snow from the twelfth lunar month in a vessel until it melts into water. Use this water to smear Chi You Dan (Red Roaming Erysipelas), miraculous.
[Danxi] Various erysipelas swellings. Use earthworm feces (Qiuyin Shi), mixed with water and applied topically. (*Shenghui Fang*, same as *Waitai*).
*[Qianjin]* Prescription for treating Dan Yin Zhen (Erysipelas Urticaria). Boil dairy products with salt, rub onto the hands, the evil qi will dissipate downwards.
[Danxi] To treat Chi You Feng Zhong (Red Roaming Wind Swelling). Mix Qiaomai (Fagopyrum esculentum) with vinegar and apply topically. (*Bingbu Shouji*)
[Yang] To treat Re Chi You Dan Du (Heat-induced Red Roaming Erysipelas Toxin). Use Gualou Mo (Fructus Trichosanthis powder) 2 large liang, mixed with strong vinegar for topical application.
*[Waitai]* Whenever erysipelas wanders within the skin and spreads, it is called Huo Dan (Fire Erysipelas). This prescription uses Qicao (larva of Tenebrio molitor) for application. (Prick the skin first, then apply for best results.)
*[Zhouhou]* Dan is a malignant toxic sore, with colors varying among the five hues. To treat it, boil the peel of chestnuts with thorns, and wash the affected area with it; this is good.
*[Baoming]* To treat Jin Si Chuang (Golden Thread Sore), also known as Hong Si Chuang (Red Thread Sore). Its shape resembles a thread or rope, varying in thickness. The *Classic* calls this Dan Du (Erysipelas Toxin). It is less extensive than Yan Du (Smoke Toxicity). If a person suffers from this, and it appears on the head and descends to the heart, death ensues; if it appears below and ascends, the result is the same. One can prick the head of the sore to cut off the meridian and release blood, then chew Pingguo Cao (Root of Wolffia globosa) and apply it, and peace will return.
[Wuyi] Erysipelas that originates internally in the abdomen and emerges in the four limbs is easy to cure; that which enters the abdomen from the four limbs is difficult to treat.
[Danxi] If a person suddenly sees red spots on the face, death is likely.
