Raw Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草) and Ginseng (Renshen, 人参), each dose weighing one tael. Only one decoction was administered, resulting in severe abdominal diarrhea, inability to see, and inability to speak. I determined that the disease condition was deep-seated and the error lay in the lack of counteracting agents in the prescription. Therefore, I continued to use the previous herbs but stir-fried them until hot before administering them, likely utilizing the heat as a guiding force. After one dose, the diarrhea ceased; after four doses, mental spirit returned; after ten doses, the illness was cured and peace restored.
Jiang, aged over thirty, had a thin physique and dark complexion. In June, he preferred warmth and feared cold. The pulses in both hands were deep and choppy, and when pressed heavily, they seemed rapid. He was treated with Sanhuang Wan (Three Yellows Pill) using ginger decoction to guide the medicine downward. Each dose consisted of thirty pills. After twenty doses, slight sweating occurred, and he recovered. (Sanhuang Wan is likely Sansu Wan [Three Tonifying Pill], composed of Scutellariae Radix [Huangqin, 黄芩], Coptidis Rhizoma [Huanglian, 黄连], and Phellodendri Cortex [Huangbai, 黄柏].)
[Ha] A woman first suffered from aversion to cold, with cold hands and feet, and no fever at all. Her pulse beat eight times per respiration, and she had slight pain in both hypochondria. The treating physician diagnosed it as Shaoyang syndrome (Lesser Yang disorder). Yang Qi is internally concealed within the bone marrow, while Yin Qi is externalized, causing chills. Treatment should not target the interior or exterior directly, but rather treat from the middle. It is appropriate to regulate with Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), doubling the dosage of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) and Jujubae Fructus (Dazao, 大枣).
