The Kidney governs the hair. The classics state: "The Kidney harmonizes with blood, and its luster manifests in the hair," which refers to this principle.
[Ha] Zhang Tian Shi's Cao Huan Dan (Grass Return Pill): Long-term consumption of this medicine makes the body light and agile, as if drifting with the wind, similar to Liezi riding the void. If the hair has turned white, it will turn black from the root; if the hair has not yet turned white, it will never do so.
Some who did not believe tested it by mixing the medicine into rice and feeding it to a white cat; after one month, the cat's fur turned black.
Ingredients: Cortex Lycii (Digupi), Radix Rehmanniae Recens (Shengdi), Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii (Shichangpu), Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae (Niuxi), Radix Polygalae (Yuanzhi, remove the heart), Semen Cuscutae (Tusizi, soaked in wine for three nights, stir-fried until yellow).
Take equal parts of the above ingredients, grind into fine powder, and make pills with refined honey, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, swallowed with warm wine on an empty stomach. Salt water is also acceptable. During preparation and administration, avoid exposure to women, chickens, and dogs. (These are medicines belonging to the Shaoyin and Lower Jueyin meridians.)
[Yuan] Qingsi San (Green Silk Powder): Tonifies deficiency, strengthens teeth, and darkens beard hair.
Ingredients: Rhizoma Angelicae Dahuricae (Xiangbaizhi) and Poria (Baifuling) (5 qian each); Mother Clove Bud (Mudingxiang), Radix Asari (Xixin), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui), Radix Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong), Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis (Gancao), and Radix Nardostachyos (Gansong) (3 qian each); Radix Cimicifugae (Shengma), Herba Ecliptae (Hanliancao), Cortex Lycii (Digupi), Radix Rehmanniae Recens (Shengdi), Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata (Shudi), Sal Quaternatum (Qingyan), Fructus Psoraleae (Poguzhi/Buguzhi) (2 qian each); Halloysitum Rubrum (Hanshuishi, calcined, 7 qian); Rhizoma Cyperi (Xiangfumie, 1 liang, soaked in ginger juice overnight, stir-fried); Radix Polygoni Multiflori Preparata (Heshouwu, 1 liang); Moschus (Shexiang, 5 fen); Gaocha powder.
Grind all ingredients into fine powder. Starting on a Geng day, brush teeth facing east in the morning and west in the evening. Avoid seeing sunlight in the morning and lamplight at night. Swallow the medicinal saliva after brushing, and let the remaining saliva moisten the beard. Within one month, white beard hair will turn black instantly. Avoid consuming radishes.
[Bencao] Treats yellowing or blackening of beard hair. (Formula see section on miscellaneous disorders of loose teeth.)
[Cao] Li Qing's formula for reversing white hair states: Scrape one large sheng of the peel of old ginger. Boil it in a pan over mild or strong fire, ensuring it does not boil excessively. The pan should preferably be well-oiled and need not be washed or scraped clean. Place the ginger peel in the pan, seal tightly to prevent gas leakage, and have a meticulous person guard it. Begin boiling when the ground color is indistinct (pre-dawn). Heat slowly; do not use intense fire. If the guardian becomes tired, replace them. After one fu period (approx. 2 hours), the preparation is complete. Place in a porcelain bowl and grind to an extremely fine powder. Although Li's formula specifies one fu period, if the heat is even, the medicine is ready by sunset. To use, dip the tip of a small hairpin into the powder (size of a hemp seed). Apply to the white hair root, then pluck the hair. Reapply and rub gently with fingers to allow penetration into the skin. On the fourth day, black hair should grow. This is remarkably effective.
[Mei] For treating premature whitening of hair in young people: Pluck out the white hairs. Apply white honey into the hair follicles; black hair will immediately grow. If it does not grow, apply juice extracted from crushed walnuts (Tongzi); black hair will certainly grow.
[Qianjin Fang] Treats yellowing of hair. Apply bear fat to the hair and comb it. Spread the hair out, crawl under the bed, and lie prone on the floor for about the time it takes to eat one meal. Upon emerging, the hair will turn completely black. Using no more than one sheng of bear fat yields verified results.
