[ Luo Tianyi ] Wupi San (Five Peel Powder): Treats edema of the body, face, and limbs occurring after recovery from other diseases or following malaria and dysentery, accompanied by difficult urination and a deficient, large pulse. This is caused by deficiency and weakness of the Spleen and Lung, failing to transport and circulate Qi. Due to Qi deficiency and lack of regulation, Qi scatters between the skin and muscle layers, causing swelling and fullness. This formula is suitable for such cases.
Da Fu Pi (Arecae Pericarpium), Chi Fuling Pi (Poria Cocos with Red Skin), Shengjiang Pi (Zingiberis Rhizoma Cum Scama), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex) (stir-fried). Equal parts.
Grind the above ingredients into coarse powder. Take 5 qian per dose, add one da zhen (large cup) of water, decoct together until reduced to 8 fen (part), remove dregs, and take warm. Time is not restricted; take three times daily.
Xiangsu San (Fragrant Perilla Powder): Treats deficiency-type edema caused by Water-Qi, with red and painful/difficult urination.
Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (1 liang, remove white pith), Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Zisu Ye (Perillae Folium) (each ban liang / half liang).
Grind the above into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, add two zhan (cups) of water and three slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), decoct together.
[ Taiping Huimin Heji Jufang ] Treats severe generalized edema due to Water Disease, abdominal distension with Qi stagnation, and loss of appetite. Use 50 jin of Xiangru (Moslae Herba), finely chopped, place in a pot, cover with water several cun above the herbs, boil until the medicinal vapor is exhausted, filter dregs and clarify the liquid, simmer to a thick consistency, and form pills like tung tree seeds. Take three times daily, starting with five pills per dose, gradually increasing until urination becomes smooth.
[ Mei Shi ] Treats acute edema attacks where sitting or lying down is uncomfortable, with swelling of the head, face, and body. Take branches of mulberry trees growing towards the east bearing flowers, burn them to ash, leach with water to obtain juice, and use this juice to cook Chixiaodou (Adzuki Beans). Eat until full on an empty stomach; eat completely when hungry. Do not eat rice.
[ Bingbu Shoujifang ] Treats critical early-stage Water Disease. Eat Donggua (Benincasae Fructus) without limit; it has miraculous effects. (Zhu Danxi stated: Winter melon acts quickly; it is contraindicated for chronic illness and Yang deficiency.)
[ Zhu Danxi ] For ten types of Water-Qi. Remove the pulp of Donggua (Benincasae Fructus), insert Chixiaodou (Adzuki Beans) inside, steam until cooked, and form pills. Treats prolonged dysentery leading to fluid exhaustion, limb edema, and dry mouth. Alternatively, wrap a Donggua (Benincasae Fructus) thickly in yellow soil (five cun thick), bake/cook until done, remove soil, and drink the juice. (From Luyuan Fang)
[ Luo Tianyi ] Bai Wanzi (White Pills): Treats generalized edema and isolated abdominal distension, with shortness of breath and chest oppression, red and difficult urination. Miraculous effect.

Take Qingfen (Calomelas) and Huashi (Talcum), grind them together uniformly, wrap in thin paper, then wrap again in dough made of wheat flour. Roast over mulberry wood fire until cooked. Remove and mix with the other four ingredients. Soak steamed dough饼 (bing) in water, knead dry, and form pills the size of mung beans. Take three doses daily with Ginger Decoction before meals. Day 1: 2 pills/dose; Day 2: 3 pills/dose; Day 3: 4 pills/dose; Day 4: 5 pills/dose. If urine increases and swelling decreases, stop taking. If urine does not increase significantly, continue for one or two more days, increasing to 6 pills/dose, still three times daily. Stop when swelling subsides. If on the third day, itching/pain occurs in the teeth gaps and bad breath appears, use a mouthwash: Guanzhong (Cyathulae Radix) and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) each ban liang, ground to powder. Take 1 qian with one zhan of water, decoct to 7 fen, add a little Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum), mix well, and take warm. Decoct 1 qian daily for rinsing. Once swelling resolves, avoid salt, fish, meat, cold/hard fruits. Consume only congee for 100 days for permanent cure. If constipation and excess Qi occur, first take Haizao San (Seaweed Powder) for swelling. This formula has saved many people miraculously.
Haizao San (See Accumulated Qi section in this chapter).

[ Zhu Danxi ] A case of foot skin edema spreading up to the knees, making walking impossible, with massive facial and whole-body swelling. Use Ku Hu Rengshi (Pulp of Bitter Gourd/Fruit) rolled into bean-sized balls, wrapped in flour, boiled for one rolling boil. Take seven balls on an empty stomach. By noon, one dou of water should be discharged. Water will continue to discharge naturally for three days until emaciation occurs and cure is achieved. Restrict diet strictly for three years. Another formula for swelling: Take Ku Hu Qiao (Shell of Bitter Fruit), rub with salt, burn until carbonized, grind to powder. Mix with one zhan of Tongbian (Child's Urine) and take. Cure. (Note: Select Ku Hu without spots, with fine texture and clean surface; otherwise, it is toxic.)
[ Worldly Formula ] Sanzhong San (Three Types Powder): Treats edema. Use old Luobo Zhong (Radish Seeds) de-pulped, old Puke (Catkin Shell) de-pulped, and Wudou (Black Soybeans) one he. Decoct and take together; swelling retreats immediately.

These ten types of swelling have different roots. For the formula, double the herb corresponding to the specific root cause, and use equal parts of the remaining nine. Process each according to method, bake, grind to fine powder, refine honey to form pills the size of tung seeds. Swallow three pills with Chi Fuling Tang (Red Poria Decoction). No time restriction, take three times daily. Avoid salt for 120 days because salt transforms water. Also avoid fish, shrimp, wheat/noodles, all toxic substances, cold/raw foods, and sexual activity. Very effective. After recovery using this formula, use subsequent tonifying formulas.
Tonifying Formula
Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) (remove rough bark), Chi Fuling (Poria Cocos with Red Skin) (remove skin), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Ezhu (Curcumae Rhizoma) (boiled in vinegar), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) (equal parts, process and take as directed. Binglang (Areca Seed).
Grind all to fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose with boiling water, on an empty stomach before meals. One dose at noon, one at evening.
The above two formulas are extremely effective for Water Disease. I have tested them with 100% success, saving countless people. No water disease formula in the world surpasses these two. Do not neglect them.
[ Li Dongyuan ] Sanhua Shenyao Wan (Three-Flower Divine Protection Pills): Treats middle-fullness and abdominal distension, all Water-Dampness swelling.

Pound all ingredients together into fine powder. Adults take 2 qian per dose (3 qian if Qi is excess), mixed with cool clear tea at dawn. At night, discharge 2-3 stools of watery stool, reducing swelling by 70%. Repeat dose every 2-3 days at dawn until swelling disappears. Avoid fish/meat for over 100 days. Children take 1 qian, those under 5 years take ban qian / half qian. Contraindicated for pregnant women.
[ Baoming Ji ] Qian Yi discusses Deficiency/Excess Abdominal Distension: Excess type is not due to prolonged vomiting/diarrhea or chronic illness, nor from dysentery. Symptoms include distension with shortness of breath, restlessness, phlegm, heat, and undigested food. Use Dahuang Wan, Baibingzi, or Zishuang Wan to purge. Differentiate stool and urine; if both blocked, promote urination first, then defecation. Deficiency type occurs after prolonged vomiting/diarrhea, pulse is faint/thin, symptoms include puffiness around eyes/cheeks, cold hands/feet. First use Taqi Wan, then Yigong San, Hezhong Wan, or Yihuang San to harmonize Qi. For edema due to Qi, decoct Chenpi Tang. For edema due to Dampness, decoct Fangji Huangqi Tang and mix with Wuling San. For edema due to Heat, use Bazheng San. Another method: Edema due to Dry-Heat in Lung cuts off water source; clear Lung and remove dryness so water generates naturally. Add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) to Zhizi Chi Tang. If Heat is in Lower Jiao causing Yin consumption and blocking Qi transformation, benefit Yin so Yang transforms naturally; add Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex).
[ Li Dongyuan ] Zhongman Fenxiao Wan (Middle Fullness Dispersing Pill) (See Abdominal Distension Section).
[ Zhu Danxi ] Hot Water Edema.
Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) (5 qian), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (1 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (2.5 qian). Decoct with fast-flowing water and take.
Another Formula: Remove skin from Zhizi, take kernel, stir-fry, crush. Take with Rice Drink. If Stomach Heat is upper, use with skin.
[ Bencao Yan yi ] Treats You Feng (Wandering Wind) attacking head/face or forming lumps in limbs, Zhimu Tang (Anemarrhenae Decoction).
Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus) (each 1 liang).
Grind to coarse powder. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1.5 zhan of water and 100 crushed Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), decoct to 7 fen, take warm, 3-4 times daily. If feeling cold, omit Niubangzi. Case: Mother of an official, age 70, stroke with hand spasm, usually nourished with Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata). One day, face and back of hands swelled. A court physician diagnosed Water Disease and wanted to use Daji and Qianniu to drain. Family panicked. I consulted. I said: Suwen states "Face swelling is Wind, leg swelling is Water." Excessive Fuzi usage caused deficiency, Wind generation, and Heat. Throat would feel blocked, chest uncomfortable. As predicted, use Shengma Niuxuan Tang (Cimicifugae, Aurantii, Scrophulariae Decoction), followed by Zhimu Tang. Cured in three days.
[ Wang Haogu ] Fuyuan Dan (Restoring Origin Pill): Treats San Jiao failure to drain, Qi/Vessel blockage, pivot obstruction, panting urgency, overflowing Water-Qi penetrating collaterals, skin fullness, severe leg/calf swelling, suborbital edema, cold legs/abdomen, bitter taste, hard/distended heart/abdomen, inability to lie flat (coughing if supine), urinary retention, dream-disturbance, insomnia.
Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) (processed, 2 liang), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (stir-fried), Chuanjiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) (stir-fried to sweat), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (peeled, ginger processed), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus) (stir-fried), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (each 1 liang), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) (1.5 liang), Roukou (Myristicae Semen) (baked), Binglang (Areca Seed) (each ban liang / half liang).
Grind to powder, paste to form pills the size of tung seeds. Take 50 pills per dose with Zisu Tang (Perillae Decoction), no time restriction. Proven effective through generations. Patients should stop other medicines. Take three times daily. Initial effect is profuse urination, followed by swelling reduction and asthma cessation. Abstain from sex and salt for half a year to prevent recurrence.
[ Bencao Yan yi ] Treats Spleen Deficiency Edema, Shipi San (Solidify Spleen Powder).
Da Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (one piece), Caoguo (Tsaoko Fructus) (2 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 liang), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (2 liang), Da Fu Pi (Arecae Pericarpium) (peeled, 6 liang), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus) (one, de-pulped, sliced).
Boil in clay pot with water until half evaporated. Break open to check that Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) is not white in center. Do not let water dry to burning point. Take out, bake dry, grind to powder. Take at noon daily on empty stomach with boiling water.
[ Suwen ] "San Yin Jie" is called Water. (Wang Bing note: Refers to Cold knotting of Spleen and Lung meridians.) "Lower Jiao overflow becomes Water." (Full text in Diagnosis. Wang Bing note: Lower Jiao is distribution site; Qi stagnation without drainage leads to overflow water.)
Yangming described as "Upper panting indicates Water": Yin Qi descends then ascends; ascending, pathogen lodges between Zang-Fu, thus creating Water.
In Yunqi (Climate/Qi Movement) theory, Edema has four types:
1. Dampness. Classic: "Taiyin arrival causes Fu Edema (swelling)." Also: "Excess Dampness causes loose diarrhea, severe cases water closure and Fu Edema." Also: "Taiyin victory, foot/shank Fu Edema, fluid emission internally, Fu Edema externally." Also: "Taiyin ruling Heaven, guest excess causes head/face Fu Edema, breathing panting, treat with hot natured herbs."
2. Fire/Heat. Classic: "All Fu Edema belong to Fire." Also: "Shaoyang ruling Heaven, Fire Qi descends, Lung Qi follows, Cold/Hot Fu Edema." Also: "Shaoyang ruling Heaven, Fire excess causes skin pain, yellow/red complexion, transmitting to Water, body/face Fu Edema, abdominal fullness,仰息 (breathing with raised torso)." Also: "Shaoyang relapse, thirst drinking fluids, transforming to Water, transmitting to Fu Edema." Also: "Shaoyang ruling Heaven, guest excess, severe Fu Edema, treat with cold natured herbs."
3. Cold. Classic: "Cold excess causes floating/swelling."
4. Dryness. Classic: "Yangming arrival causes floating emptiness."
[ Suwen ] Yellow Emperor asked: Why does Shaoyin govern Kidney? Why does Kidney govern Water? Qibo replied: Kidney is Supreme Yin, Supreme Yin stores abundant Water. Lung is Taiyin, Shaoyin is Winter Pulse. Thus, root is Kidney, branch is Lung; both accumulate Water. Emperor asked: How can Kidney gather Water to cause disease? Qibo said: Kidney is the Gate of Stomach. If gate fails, Water gathers following its kind. Overflowing up/down into skin causes Fu Edema. Fu Edema is disease from gathered Water. Emperor asked: Do all Waters originate from Kidney? Qibo said: Kidney is Yin Organ. Earth Qi rising belongs to Kidney generating Water fluids, hence Supreme Yin. Vigorous exertion leads to Kidney Sweat. If Kidney Sweat meets Wind, cannot enter Zang-Fu internally, cannot exit Skin externally, lodges in Xuancu (sweat pores), travels in skin layers, transmits to Fu Edema. Rooted in Kidney, named Feng Shui (Wind Water). Xuancu refers to sweat pores. Emperor asked: What is the function of the 57 Water Acupoints? Qibo said: These 57 Shu points are gathering of accumulated Yin, entry/exit of Water. Five rows of five on the sacrum are Kidney Shu. Thus Water Disease presents as lower Fu Edema and abdominal distension, upper panting and inability to lie down; both root and branch diseased. Lung causes panting, Kidney causes Edema. When Lung rebellion prevents lying down and they mutually transmit, it is Water Qi retention. (Root/Branch of Lung/Kidney, upper/lower mutual transmission affected together because these two organs retain Water Qi.) Two rows of five above Futu (Quadriceps) are Street of Kidney, intersection of Three Yin at foot. One row of six above ankle is descending Kidney Meridian, named Taichong.
