(The characteristic of Hu Hernia is that) when lying down, the hernia retracts into the abdomen; when standing, it protrudes from the abdomen and shifts laterally into the scrotum.
[Hai Zang] Zhang Zhongjing treats Yin Hu Hernia Qi (Yin-type Fox Hernia), characterized by masses of varying size moving up and down intermittently, with Zhizhu San (Spider Powder). (Foxes hide at night and appear during the day. Since the site of the hernia belongs to the distribution of the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian, which corresponds to the private and hidden areas of the human body, descending during the day and ascending at night, it is named "Hu Hernia" [Fox Hernia].)
Zhizhu (Spider, 14 pieces, stir-fried until charred); Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, half a qian, preferably those entering the Jueyin meridian with thick flesh).
Grind the above ingredients into a powder. Take one qian per dose; honey pills are also acceptable. Leigong stated: When using spiders, do not use those of five colors, nor those with large bodies covered in prickly hairs, nor those that are thin and small; all of these are unsuitable. One must select those found on webs in the southwest corner of houses, which have small bodies but large tails, and contain pale yellow pus inside their abdomens; these are authentic. When used, remove the head and feet, grind into a paste, and add to the medicine. This is my method; if used stir-fried until charred as Zhang Zhongjing did, it would be completely ineffective.
Another prescription: Used for unilateral swelling, irregular movement up and down, and unceasing pain. Muli (Oyster Shell), any amount, sealed with salt mud, calcined with three jin of charcoal until the fire extinguishes, cooled, and two liang taken. Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, one liang), dried and ground into fine powder. Mix the two ingredients evenly, adjust with cold water to an appropriate consistency, and apply to the affected area. Recovery occurs once urination becomes profuse.
The *Neijing* states that for acupuncture and moxibustion treatment of Hu Hernia, only the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian should be selected. The classic says: "The diseases generated by the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian include Hu Hernia." Treatment should follow the principles of selecting points based on the excess or deficiency, cold or heat, and sinking conditions of the meridian.
[From *Jiayi Jing*]: For Hu Hernia, Taichong (LR3) is the primary point. For pain in the inner thigh, Qi Yong (Qi Abscess), Hu Hernia, pain radiating up and down pulling into the lower abdomen, and inability to bend or extend, Shangqiu (SP5) is the primary point. For Hu Hernia accompanied by palpitations and shortness of qi, Juque (CV14) is the primary point.
[From *Qianjin Fang*]: In women, with Shan Jia (masses and tumors), nodular pain, occurring without fixed timing, protruding at sunrise and retracting at sunset, or descending upon bearing heavy loads and stopping when lightened, this is Hu Hernia. Tianjing (SI10) (5 fen moxa cones). Zhoujian (Extra point) (5 fen moxa cones; recovery occurs with slight sweating after mild moxibustion). Qihai (CV6) (3 cun moxa cones. Alternative method: Exchange east-west orientation, advance three cuns toward the disease site both superiorly and inferiorly, apply reducing method). Zhongji (CV3) (3 cun moxa cones; immediate recovery). Below the depression behind the ear, if Kidney Qi sinks, causing pain in the waist and sacrum with inability to bend or extend, it is termed Hu Hernia. (Full text see Diagnosis section.)
