(This is commonly known as "stealing needle" eye, i.e., hordeolum.)
Regarding the etiology of ocular diseases based on the Six Qi (Six Climatic Factors) theory, there are two main types:
The first is Heat. The Classic states: "When Shaoyin (Heart-Kidney Fire) governs the Heaven, during the third phase of the annual cycle, the Great Fire prevails while cold qi occasionally arrives; the people suffer from red eyes and ulcers. Treatment employs cold-natured agents."
The second is Dryness. The Classic states: "When Metal Qi is excessive in a year, the people suffer from red, swollen, and ulcerated eyes." It also states: "When Yangming (Metal) governs the Heaven, with excessive Dryness, the people suffer from squinting eyes and opacities/ulcers. Treatment employs warm-natured agents."
[Common Folk] Prescription for treating "stealing needle" eye.
Arisaema cum Bile (Sheng Nan Xing, raw, ground into powder, 3 qian)
Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Sheng Di Huang, amount不拘/based on need)
Place the above ingredients together, grind into a paste, and apply to both sides of the Taiyang acupoint (Temple). The swelling will subside naturally.
Another prescription for treating "stealing needle" eye: Crush fresh ginger finely and apply it to the affected area. Healing occurs immediately upon tearing up.
[Zhu Danxi] *Taraxaci Herba* (Pugongying), which resembles *Allii Macrostematis Bulbus* (Jicai/Cauliflower weed) during the Qingming Festival, blooming with a single flower resembling chrysanthemum. Take the dried herb, mix it in equal parts with *Xanthii Fructus Praeparatus* (Canger Cao) ground into powder. Decoct strongly with good vinegar, soak and wash the affected area until healed.
*Pugongying Rendongjiu* (Dandelion and Honeysuckle Wine) treats Ding's Disease (Acute paronychia of the fingertip) with extreme efficacy and repeated success. (See the section on Breast Abscess/Ru Yong Men.)
[Common Folk] Treatment for Ding's Disease. Crush *Taraxaci Herba* (Pugongying/Dandelion), mix with water, strain, and ingest the liquid. Also, apply the remaining dregs topically to the lesion; this has proven effective repeatedly. For treating Ding's Disease, use *Solanum lyratum* (Ye Luosu/Wild Eggplant, synonymous with *Cuscutae Semen*/Tusizi - note: text implies wild eggplant but equates to dodder seed contextually or local variant), *Lonicerae Japonicae Caulis* (Jinyinhua Teng/Honeysuckle Vine), and *Fagopyri Dibotryis Rhizoma* (Tianqiaomai/Buckwheat Herb).
Cut these herbs finely, decoct strongly with good rice vinegar. First fumigate, then wash.
Another prescription: Mix human feces with yellow mud, pound into a paste, and wrap around the affected area for healing.
[Zhu Danxi] Treatment for sudden swelling and pain of the finger, named Daizhi (Acute felon/infection of the finger tip). Grind *Mume Fructus* (Wumei) in vinegar, soak the affected area; recovery is immediate. For finger swelling, use sour fermented rice water (Suanjiangshui), add a little salt, heat, and soak. Replace when cool. (Prescription from Sun Simiao.)
(Qian, pronounced 'qian', meaning 'to clamp' or 'embed')
[*Jisheng Fang*] Treatment for Onychocryptosis with Paronychia (Jia Ju). Caused by trimming nails injuring the muscle, or long nails invading the flesh, leading to sores, swelling, and pain. Further aggravated by wearing tight boots causing calluses and abrasions on the four sides, oozing yellow fluid, spreading infection, rotting all five fingers, gradually extending upwards to the instep. Blisters and pus rise on the sides, resembling burns, worsening day and night. This condition is often beyond the reach of ordinary medical prescriptions.
Use 5 liang of Vitriol (Lv Fan/Green Vitriol). Its color and shape resemble Thenardite (Puxiao/Niter) but is green. Place it on an iron plate, seal it with charcoal, and blow fire to make it intense. The vitriol will boil. If it flows out as a red liquid resembling molten gold, it is genuine. Wait for boiling to stop and the liquid to drain, remove from fire, let cool, take out, and grind into fine powder. The color resembles Red Lead (Huandan). Store it. First, wash the sore with saline solution, dry with cloth, and apply this powder for healing.
[*Lingyuan Fang*] Treatment for Jia Ju where flesh envelops the nail, with pus, blood, and pain not healing. In such cases, the nail embedded in the flesh must be removed; even without treatment, it may heal. If a sore has already formed and does not heal, use equal parts of *Frankincense* (Ruxiang) powder and calcined *Alumen* (Danfan) ground together, and apply internally to the lesion to resolve it.
[*Jisheng Fang*] Shengjin Formula for treating Jia Ju, where flesh envelops the nail, with pus, blood, and pain not healing.
Use the thick part of Oyster Shell (Muli), grind raw into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with Indigo Flower Wine (Dianhua Jiu) and taken orally. If the abscess is severe and already ulcerated, apply this powder externally, and additionally administer decoction medicine, three times a day.
[Zhu Danxi] For Onychocryptosis (Ingrown Nail), depressed nails, or wounds caused by cutting nails that have persisted for years without healing. Use *Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata* (Wutou/Aconite) tip and *Phellodendri Cortex* (Huangbai) in equal parts, grind into powder, clean the area, and apply.
[*Jisheng Fang*] Hua Tuo's repeatedly effective prescription for Ingrown Nails.
Realgar (Sha) and Frankincense (Ruxiang) (both ground. Each 1 qian)
Calomel (Nifen) (0.5 qian)
Olive Pit (Ganlan He) (charred to retain its nature, 3 pits)
Red Lead (Huandan) (1 zi)
Grind the above into powder, mix with raw Sesame Oil (Sheng Mayou). First wash with saline solution and dry. Apply twice for effectiveness.
