In summer, one is injured by summer-heat; in autumn, malaria must occur. (For treatment methods, see the Malaria section.)
[From *Mai Jing*] If both Yin and Yang pulses are full and vigorous, with Yin being more severe, it transforms into Warm Malaria.
If spring should be warm but turns cold, summer should be hot but turns cool, autumn should be cool but turns hot, and winter should be cold but turns warm, this is having the qi of a different season at the wrong time. Therefore, throughout the year, the illnesses of people of all ages tend to be similar, which is called an epidemic disease of the seasonal passage. (The discussion can be found in the Treatise on Cold Damage section.)
[From *Huo Ren Shu*] Throughout the year, if patients of all ages have similar symptoms, this is the qi of seasonal passage, commonly known as Tian Xing (Heavenly Transmission). Lao Jun Shen Ming San, Wuchengzi Yinghuo Wan, and Sheng San Zi Bai Du San can be used regardless of the duration or depth of the illness; emetics or purgatives are applied according to the symptoms. Thus, Sheng San Zi does not distinguish between Yin/Yang or Exterior/Interior patterns.
Lao Jun Shen Ming San treats Plague.
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 1 qian), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, 1 fen), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 1 liang, processed to remove black skin), Wu Tou (Aconiti Radix, 4 liang, processed to remove skin and tip).
The above five herbs are ground into coarse powder, placed in a silk bag, and worn. Living among villages, one will remain free of disease. If plague qi invades, take one fang cun bi with warm wine, cover up to induce sweating; vomiting indicates recovery. If three or four days have passed, take three cun bi, boil in one bowl of water until boiling vigorously, and divide into three doses.
Sheng San Zi: Preface by Su Nei Han, full text in *Huo Ren Shu*. When toxic heat spreads, use Sheng San Zi without distinguishing between Yin or Yang infection; take continuously until cured. It cannot be compared to Cold Damage diseases. During epidemics, cook a pot at dawn; give one large cup to everyone regardless of age, status, or gender, so that seasonal qi does not enter.
Cao Dou Kou (Tsaoko Cardamomi Fructus, 10 pieces, wrapped in flour, baked, peel removed), Zhu Ling (Polypori Sclerotium, peel removed), Shi Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Liang Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, remove rhizome), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed, remove skin and navel), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, remove roots), Nong Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, processed with ginger juice), Ben (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, stir-fried, remove pith), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, remove rhizome), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Huo Xiang (Agastaches Herba), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus, washed with decoction), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each half liang).
Chop the above ingredients. Take 5 qian per dose, add 1.5 cups of water, boil to obtain 0.8 cup, remove dregs, and take hot. Re-boil the remaining dregs and take on an empty stomach.
Although these two formulas treat epidemics without distinguishing Yin/Yang, they are suitable for cases with excess cold and exterior pathogenic factors.
[Danxi] When everyone suffers from similar symptoms, it is called Tian Xing Shi Yi (Seasonal Epidemic). There are formulas suitable for tonification, dispersing, or descending.
Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Jie Geng (Platocodonis Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Ren Zhong Huang (Humanis Excrementum Purificatum), Hua Shi (Talcum), Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma).
Make pills with Qu paste. Take 50-70 pills per dose. Administer with decoctions based on Qi, Blood, or Phlegm differentiation. For Qi deficiency, send down with Si Jun Zi Tang. For Blood deficiency, send down with Si Wu Tang. For excessive Phlegm, send down with Er Chen Tang. For severe heat, send down with fresh urine mixed with the previous medicine.
[Ben Cao] Fen Qing (Urine Sediment): In the twelfth lunar month, cut Dandan Bamboo, remove green skin, soak to extract juice. Treats Tian Xing, mania due to heat, febrile diseases, poisoning, malignant sores, and mushroom toxicity. Soak Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit and Sugarcane in the juice to treat Tian Xing febrile diseases.
[Danxi] Resolves all disasters and diseases. Use 5 liang of Fen Cao (Licorice Root), finely chop, lightly stir-fry. Grind with appropriate amount of non-intoxicating wine according to the patient's capacity. Remove dregs and take warm. Profuse diarrhea will occur shortly, expelling toxins. Even if extremely thirsty, do not drink water; drinking water makes rescue difficult.
The above three formulas are suitable for cases with excess heat and interior pathogenic factors.
[Jiegu] Xiong Huang Wan treats epidemics and prevents contagion.
Xiong Huang (Realgar, 1 liang, ground), Chi Xiao Dou (Vigna umbellata Seed, stir-fried until cooked), Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix), Gui Jian Yu (Eucommiae Ramulus? Note: Traditionally Araliae Chinensis Ramus or similar, here likely Eucommiae or specific anti-parasitic herb, WHO term often linked to Artemisia or similar context, but literal is Arrow Branch Feather - usually refers to *Eucommiae Ramulus* or *Artemisiae Annuae Herba* in some contexts, strictly "Gui Jian Yu" is *Eucommiae Ramulus* in modern pharmacopoeia but historically varied. Here kept as Gui Jian Yu), each 2 liang.
Grind into fine powder, mix with refined honey to make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 5 pills daily on an empty stomach with warm water. One can share bed and clothes with the sick without contagion.
[Huo Ren Shu] Wuchengzi Yinghuo Wan primarily wards off epidemic diseases, evil qi, ghosts, tigers, wild wolves, snakes, vipers, bees, scorpions, various poisons, weapons, blades, thieves, and凶害 (violent harm).
Ying Huo (Lampyris), Gui Jian Yu (Eucommiae Ramulus, remove skin), Ji Li (Tribuli Fructus) (each 1 liang), Xiong Huang (Realgar), Ci Huang (Orpiment) (each 2 liang), Fan Shi (Alumen, 1 liang, roasted until liquid evaporates), Ling Yang Jiao (Saiga Tatarica Cornu), Duan Zao Hui (Furnace Ash), Tie Chui Bing (Iron Hammer Handle, charred at the striking end, 1.5 fen).
Grind the above nine ingredients into powder. Mix with egg yolk and one rooster comb to form pills the size of apricot kernels. Sew into triangular bags, place 5 pills inside, wear on the left arm, or hang on the door.
If spring should be warm but clear qi is suppressed, excess pathogen resides in the Liver; Sheng Ma Jie Ji Tang is the primary formula. (Formula seen in Warm Disease section.) If summer should be hot but cold qi suppresses it, excess pathogen resides in the Heart; choose Tiao Zhong Tang, She Gan Tang, or Ban Xia Gui Zhi Gan Cao Tang.
Tiao Zhong Tang treats sudden cold suppressing intense heat in early summer/autumn, knotting in the four limbs, causing high fever and headache. Cold injuring the Stomach causes diarrhea, possibly bloody, watery, or red stools, high fever, dizziness, rapid pulse; purgation is indicated.
Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, peeled, 3 fen), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix), Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Jie Geng (Platocodonis Radix), Fu Ling (Poria, peeled), Ben (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix, select authentic; if unavailable, use Chuan Xiong), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) (each half liang).
Chop the above. Take 5 qian per dose, add 1.5 cups of water, boil to 1 cup, wait a while, then take again. Stop when loose bowels are achieved. Reduce dose for children. (Not suitable for deficiency-cold, no high fever, only diarrhea, or cholera-like symptoms.)
She Gan Tang (Formula seen in Aphonia section.) Ban Xia Gui Zhi Gan Cao Tang (Formula seen in Sore Throat section.)
If autumn should be cool but turns excessively hot, suppression leads to excess pathogen in the Lung; use Bai Hu Jia Cang Zhu Tang or Yin Chen Zhi Tiao Wu Ling San. (Bai Hu Cang Zhu Tang seen in Summer-Heat section, Wu Ling San seen in Thirst section.)
[Danxi] Winter-Warm disease occurs when there is qi out of season. In deep winter, gentlemen should store energy but instead emit it outward; use tonifying herbs combined with exterior-releasing herbs.
Formula for Ren Zhong Huang:
Take a bamboo tube, keep the nodes at both ends. Make a hole in one node, put Gan Cao inside, plug the hole with bamboo/wood nail, immerse in a fecal pit for one month. Take out, dry, and use to treat Plague Toxin. (Use this single herb, added to tonifying and exterior-releasing herbs, decoct and take together.)
[Huo Ren Shu] If winter should be cold but turns excessively warm, suppression leads to excess pathogen in the Kidney; use Wei Rui Tang. (Formula seen in Wind-Dampness section.)
