[Su Wen] The Yellow Emperor asked: Why does a person become aphonic (unable to speak) in the ninth month of pregnancy? Qibo replied: This is due to the obstruction of the collateral vessels of the uterus. The Emperor asked: Why do you say so? Qibo said: The collateral vessels of the uterus are connected to the Kidney. The Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) meridian passes through the Kidney and connects to the root of the tongue; therefore, speech may be impaired. The Emperor asked: How should this be treated? Qibo said: No treatment is needed; it will recover after the tenth month (delivery). (Wang Bing's commentary states: Shaoyin refers to the Kidney meridian. Qi fails to nourish the root of the tongue, resulting in the inability to speak.)
Guo discussed the causes of postpartum aphonia. He answered: The Heart has seven apertures and three hairs (referring to its intricate structure). Postpartum weakness often leads to blood stasis, where failed blood blocks the Heart orifices, preventing clear consciousness. Heart Qi connects to the tongue; if Heart Qi is blocked, the tongue becomes stiff, causing aphonia. Treatment involves administering Qizhen San (Seven Treasures Powder).
Ingredients: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Shi Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 1 liang); Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Chen Sha (Cinnabar) (processed separately, each 0.5 liang).
Grind into fine powder. Take 1 qian per dose, mixed with Bo He Tang (Mint Decoction), at any time.
Hu’s Gufeng Dan San: Treats postpartum aphonia with closed eyes. Use Bai Fan (Alumen) finely ground. Take 1 qian per dose, mixed with hot water.
[Zhu Danxi] For prolapse of the rectum (Tuogang): If due to Qi deficiency, tonify Qi using [missing character], Chuan Xiong, and Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma). If due to Blood deficiency, use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) with Sheng Ma. If due to Qi heat, use Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) 6 liang and Sheng Ma 1 liang, grind into powder, and form pills with Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven). If due to Blood heat, use Liangxue Siwu Tang (Cooling Blood Four Substances Decoction) plus Huang Bai (Phellodendri Cortex).
[Bai Yi Xuan Fang] Treats prolapse of the rectum. Use Huai Hua (Sophorae Flos) and Huai Jiao (Stemonariae Fructus) in equal parts. Stir-fry until yellow, grind into powder. Dip in sheep blood, roast until hot, eat, and wash down with wine.
[Shi Yi De Xiao Fang] Treats prolapse of the rectum.
Ingredients: Huai Hua, Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica), Bai Lian (equal parts. "Bai Lian" is likely a typo for "Bai Lian" - Ampelopsis Radix).
Grind into fine powder. Take on an empty stomach with wine; the prolapsed part will retract upon defecation.
[Duo Qingbi] Pi San: Treats anal prolapse due to severe diarrhea or excessive straining.
Ingredients: [Missing Character] Pi (one piece, burned to retain efficacy), Ci Shi (Magnetitum) (0.5 liang, crushed), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Cortex) (0.5 liang).
Grind into powder. Take one fang cun bi (a measure equivalent to a square inch spoonful) with warm water. Avoid heavy lifting and sexual intercourse. [Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang] treats female uterine prolapse by adding one turtle head, burned to ash and ground.
[Zhu Danxi] Painful prolapse of the rectal head, which falls out when dry and re-prolapses, is called Jiechang Bing (Intestinal Severance Disease). If the intestine completely necroses, death ensues. When initially protruding about one cun, treat by having the patient sit in one zhan (measure) of Sesame Oil, and drink several sheng of Hemp Seed Juice. This cures it.
[Duo Qingbi] Wu Bei Zi (Galla Chinensis) ground into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct in two bowls of water until reduced by half. Add a piece of Bai Fan (Alumen). Place in a small bucket and fumigate/wash the area. Immediate effect.
[Shi Yi De Xiao Fang] Treats male and female prolapse of the rectum. Use Wu Bei Zi, Jing Jie, and human urine. Decoct strongly and wash the area.
[Ben Cao Yan Yi] Treats Changfeng (Wind in the Intestines) and prolapse of the rectum with bleeding. Use three stalks of Zao Jiao (Gleditsiae Fructus), crush them, add one bowl of water, and rub until dissolved. Filter through double-layered silk to obtain clear juice. Soak the prolapsed rectum in the medicinal liquid; it will retract naturally without manual pushing. After retraction, wash the area above and below with hot water to circulate the Zao Jiao qi, preventing recurrence. Wash three times for a cure.
[Ji Sheng Fang] Treats chronic prolapse of the rectum unhealed for years. Use three jin of raw iron and one dou of water. Boil until five sheng remain. Remove the iron and use the remaining liquid to wash the area twice daily. Another method uses rust water from sharpening knives, which is also effective.
[Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang] If the intestine protrudes with the prolapse and twists, making reduction difficult, crush fresh Gua Lou (Trichosanthis Fructus) and soak the area. Wash hands in pork juice, then massage gently to warm the area; the intestine will naturally retract.
[Shi Yi De Xiao Fang] Another prescription for prolapse of the rectum.
Ingredients: Jing Jie, Long Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Piao Xiao (Natrii Sulfas).
Decoct in water and wash every morning; the prolapsed part will retract naturally.

Ingredients: Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma) powder, Jing Jie Sui (equal parts).
Grind into powder. Use three spoons per dose, decoct in one large bowl of water until hot, and wash the area.
Zhen Fen San: Treats chronic prolapse of the rectum unhealed for years.
Grind Zhen Fen (Needle Powder) finely. Apply a small amount to the area and press in manually for a cure.
[Ben Cao Yan Yi] Treats Changfeng, prolapse of the rectum, and bleeding. Use She Chuang Zi (Cnidii Fructus) as needed. Stir-fry and grind into powder. Apply to the prolapsed rectum; it retracts immediately. Very effective.
[Duo Qingbi] Use Mu Zei (Equiseti Herba) as needed. Burn to retain efficacy, grind into fine powder. Sprinkle on the anus and press in manually.
[Chen Xian Fang] Treats painful prolapse of the rectum due to prolonged diarrhea. Hei Sheng San (Black Holy Powder).
Take one large spider. Wrap tightly in leaves, tie with thread, and burn in a box until black but retaining efficacy. Grind finely and mix with a small amount of Huang Dan (Minium). For these conditions, first wash with Bai Fan, Scallion, and Pepper soup, then dry. Sprinkle the powder on the soft tissue and use your palm to push it back in. Excellent effect.
[Sheng Ji Zong Lu] Treats chronic cold accumulation in the Large Intestine causing prolapse of the rectum that cannot be reduced. Take one liang of Wo Niu (Helix Aspersa/Millet Snail), burn to ash, and mix with Zhu Zhi (Porcine Fat) to apply.
[Qian Jin Fang] Treats chronic prolapse of the rectum unhealed for years. Take one turtle head, burn until smoke ceases, grind into powder. Apply to the anus daily and press manually.
[Zhu Danxi] Treats prolapse of the rectum. Burn Hu Su (Coriandri Fructus) and fumigate the area; it retracts immediately.
[Zhang Yuanji] Treats various hemorrhoids and prolapse of the rectum. Take one dead snake, finger-thick. If wet, dig a pit and burn it. Cover the pit with a perforated board and sit on it to fumigate until the smoke ceases. Highly effective.
[Shi Yi De Xiao Fang] Protrusion of the rectal head. Fumigate with Zao Jiao. Next, take one Yan You (slug/snail), soak in honey, remove the slug, and mix the honey with Tu Zhu (Hematitum) to apply; it retracts. A case of a woman with prolapse: The doctor prescribed one spoon of Glutinous Rice, decocted strongly, and drunk. After removing the rice, once the anus was washed and warmed, a brick was heated red-hot, moistened with vinegar, and covered with a green cloth. The patient sat on the cloth with her anus exposed. If too hot, more cloth was added. The anus retracted into the abdomen, curing the condition.
Zi Ji Gao: Treats anal prolapse due to visceral heat.
Take a large handful of Zi Bei Ji (Houttuyniae Herba, also known as Yu Xing Cao). Pound into a paste. First wash the anus with Piao Xiao (Natrii Sulfas) water. Support the rectum with a Banana Leaf, then sit on the medicine applied to the buttocks. It will retract naturally.
