[Li Dongyuan] If postpartum wind-cold is on the exterior, causing edema of the face, eyes, and four limbs, use Qisheng Wan from *Ju Fang*, taken with plain warm water. Increase dosage gradually until bowel movement or diuresis occurs. (See Qisheng Wan formula under Hemorrhoids section.) If edema extends to the knees with panting and cough, double the dose of Costus Root (Muxiang) and Areca Seed (Binglang), indicating excessive Qi stagnation. If there is only edema accompanied by headache and dizziness, add Notopterygium Rhizome (Qianghuo) and Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong), indicating excessive Wind. If there is only simple edema, take the original Qisheng Wan formula alone.

[Du Qingbi] The favored concubine of Marshal Zhang Xuanhui suffered sudden edema half a month after childbirth. Obstetricians were summoned urgently but failed to cure her after half a month; the condition worsened, so Du Qingbi was summoned. Upon arrival, Du asked, "What diagnosis did other physicians make?" Zhang replied, "All said it was Water-Qi edema." Du said, "Incorrect. Typically, Water-Qi disease causes coughing and painful/difficult urination. Now your concubine has no difficulty urinating and no cough, only cold hands and feet. This is emptiness of the Blood Sea (Uterus) with blocked Qi flow, causing facial edema." He then treated her with herbs that nourish blood and harmonize Qi. After ten days, the illness had receded by seventy to eighty percent; after half a month, she fully recovered. The medicine used was Mudan San from *Ling Yuan Fang*. That prescription states it treats Wind-Cold Vacuity Cold of the Blood Sea.
