If the eyes exhibit a yellow hue, the lower back feels as if it is about to break, and spontaneous sweating occurs profusely like flowing water (another version states: if the Renzhong [GV26] area is flat, death occurs in seven days). When a patient suffers from Bone Jue (Bone Meridian Exhaustion), with yellowing and falling out of teeth, death occurs in ten days. All floating pulses without a root indicate death. This is because the Qi of the Five Zang and Six Fu organs has lost its foundation.
Bian Que and Hua Tuo stated: If the essence of the Five Zang organs is severely depleted, Shen Ming (Spirit) fails to reside within, and the voice becomes hoarse, death ensues. If a patient gropes along the seams of their clothing and speaks deliriously, the condition is incurable (this indicates Yangming Meridian Exhaustion). If both Yin and Yang Qi are exhausted, causing the patient to pull at clothes and grasp at empty air while speaking deliriously, death ensues. If a patient speaks deliriously, is confused, or is unable to speak, the condition is generally incurable; however, if it is a heat disease and the patient can still speak, it may be treatable (the above three conditions all indicate Yangming Meridian Exhaustion). If both Yin and Yang Qi are exhausted, resulting in aphonia and inability to speak, death occurs in three and a half days. If a patient urinates involuntarily while lying down and is unaware of it, death ensues (this indicates Yangming Meridian Exhaustion). If a patient emits a corpse-like odor, the condition is incurable. If a patient’s face appears pale and shimmering, eyes stare fixedly, and they breathe with shoulder elevation, death occurs in one day (this indicates Gallbladder and Lung Meridian Exhaustion). If Yin is knotted and Yang is exhausted, with eyes staring fixedly without movement, death ensues. If Yin and Yang Qi are exhausted and depleted, with sunken eye sockets, death ensues. If the Eye System (Muscles connecting the eye to the brain) is tilted, death occurs in seven days. If the mouth opens like a fish's mouth and cannot close, with breath exiting but not returning, death ensues. If the mouth remains open, death occurs in three days. If the lips turn cyanotic and the Renzhong [GV26] area becomes inverted/convex, death ensues (Spleen and Liver Meridian Exhaustion, same below). If the lips evert and the Renzhong [GV26] area is full, death ensues. If the lips and mouth suddenly become dry, the condition is incurable (cause unknown). If the lips swell and teeth turn scorched black, death ensues (Liver and Kidney Meridian Exhaustion). If both Yin and Yang Qi are exhausted, teeth resemble cooked small beans, and the pulse is faint, death ensues. If teeth suddenly turn black, death occurs in thirteen days (Shaoyin Meridian Exhaustion). If the tongue curls inward and the testicles retract, death is certain (Jueyin Meridian Exhaustion). If sweat does not flow, and the tongue curls and turns black, death ensues (Taiyin and Jueyin Meridian Exhaustion). If hair stands erect, death occurs in fifteen days (Shaoyin Meridian Exhaustion). If hair is dry and wiry like hemp, accompanied by irritability, death ensues (Shaoyin Meridian Exhaustion). If hair and eyebrows stand upright and protrude, death ensues (same as above). If fingernails and toenails turn cyanotic, death ensues. If fingernails and toenails turn white, the condition is incurable. If the flesh under the fingernails and toenails on hands and feet turns black, death occurs in eight days. If Ying Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) are exhausted and the face swells, death ensues. If sudden edema occurs with a dark blue-black complexion, death ensues. If palms swell and palmar lines disappear, death ensues. If the umbilicus swells and protrudes outward, death ensues (protrusion of the umbilicus indicates Spleen exhaustion first). If the scrotum and penis swell simultaneously, death ensues. If the pulse ceases, the mouth is open, and feet are swollen, death occurs in five days. If the dorsum of the foot swells and both knees enlarge to the size of a dou [ancient unit of volume], death occurs in ten days.
