[Zhu Danxi] Tendon spasm (muscle cramp) all belongs to blood-heat syndrome. Use Siwu Decoction (Four Substances Decoction) added with Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Honghua (Carthami Flos), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), and Nanting (Arisaematis Rhizoma Preparatum). If the tendon spasms start from the big toe of the foot and twist upwards to gather near the waist at the thigh, this is caused by rich nourishment (dietary excess) and contracting cold after drinking alcohol. Add Jiu Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix prepared with wine), Honghua, Cangzhu, and Nanting, decocted with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) for administration.
[Shengji Zonglu] Treats liver deficiency causing tendon spasms. Use leaves of Chuliao Dou (Polygoni Multiflori Folium or specific herb context: Polygonum orientale leaf), chopped to a volume of Sanhe (approx. 30ml), add one Shan (approx. 200ml) of water and three He (approx. 60ml) of wine. Decoct until four He remain, remove dregs, and take warm in two divided doses.
Sun Shangyao treated foot tendon spasms with pain and contracture. Take Songjie (Pinus Massoniana Node) two liang, finely cut like rice grains, and Xuxiang (Boswelliae Resina) one qian. Place these ingredients in a silver or ceramic vessel, stir-fry slowly over low heat until charred, retaining only one-tenth of their medicinal property, remove fire toxicity, and grind into fine powder. Take one to two qian per dose, mixed with hot Mugua Jiu (Chaenomeles Speciosa Wine). This method applies to similar tendon diseases.
[Waitai Mi Yao] Treats tendon spasms. Take old cotton wadding, soak it in strong vinegar within a steamer, and steam until hot. Wrap the patient's foot with the cotton wadding, replacing it continuously to maintain heat, until recovery.
[Zhang Zhongjing] In the disease of tendon spasms, the arms and legs are straight, the pulse runs up and down with a slight wiry quality. If the spasms extend into the abdomen, Jishibai San (Chicken Dropping White Powder) is the primary treatment. Use only Jishibai (White part of chicken droppings) as a single ingredient to make a powder. Take a Fangcunbi (square-inch scoop), mix with Liuhe (approx. 120ml) of water, and take warm.
[Zhu Danxi] For tendon spasms throughout the body that are unbearable when entering the abdomen, prepare an extremely salty salt soup and immerse the body warmly in a bath trough.
[Ling Shu Jing] For yang meridian tendon spasms, treat the yang; for yin meridian tendon spasms, treat the yin; both are treated using Cui Ci (quenching puncture/acupuncture with heated needles). (This refers to the "Yi Tong Wei Shu" [pain point as acupoint] method mentioned in the *Si Shi Qi* chapter, likely involving burning needle (Fanzhen)劫刺 (robbing puncture). During tendon spasms, observe where the pain is located; if in yang, puncture yang; if in yin, puncture yin, following the painful area. Hence it is called "Yi Tong Wei Shu". If one needling does not yield immediate awareness of effect, repeat puncturing until sensation and efficacy are achieved; hence "Yi Zhi Wei Shu" [knowing as the number].)
[Dou Cai] For tendon spasms with pain, moxibustion on Chengshan (BL57) can cure it.
Below the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian, if both blood and qi are deficient, one is prone to tendon spasms and pain below the heel/calf. (Full text see Treatment Methods section.)
