The Inner Chapters of *Baopuzi* record that a man surnamed Zhao from Shangdang suffered from leprosy (a severe skin disease or leprosy) for many years without cure. Later, he was instructed by an extraordinary person to consume pine resin for one hundred days, after which the leprosy was completely cured. Initially, he did not know what pine resin was; later, after consulting various books, he learned that pine resin is simply pine rosin. It has the effects of detoxification, removing dampness, reducing swelling, relieving pain, generating flesh, and resolving phlegm. Long-term consumption can lighten the body, prolong life, and sustain one during grain avoidance without hunger. The "Jiu Ke Wan" (Long-lasting Cough Pill) in *Wanguo Yao Fang* consists of the combined use of pine resin and licorice. I once suffered from coughing, to which all medicines were ineffective. Later, each time I took one qian of dry pine resin powder, taken with cool tea, my cough was completely cured within more than a month. For ten years since then, it has never recurred, and my spirit is stronger than before. From this, it is evident that pine resin indeed possesses the power to nourish marrow and strengthen bones.
Furthermore, in the summer of the Dingmao year, during the Sichuan-Hubei war, I treated a soldier whose bullet had penetrated through his chest from his back. Several fragments of bone were extracted from the wound. Each day, I ordered him to consume cow's milk and Chinese yam. After several days, his diet slightly improved, but he expectorated foul-smelling pus and could not sit or stand. Later, I ordered him to take pine resin twice daily, one qian each time. After three days, the foul pus was entirely discharged, and new bone grew inside the wound. Over a month later, the wound healed completely, and he walked as usual.
Another soldier, Li XX, suffered from bodily edema and an abdomen swollen like a winnowing basket due to excessive consumption of raw and cold foods. All medicines proved ineffective. He was ordered to take three qian of pine resin daily, divided into three doses. He was completely cured in five days.
A rural man suffered from liver abscess (purulent infection of the liver). After ulceration, he underwent treatment for five years without success. Two holes had perforated, discharging about a bowl of foul water daily, and he expectorated pus and blood with an exceptionally foul odor. In the early summer of the Wuchen year, he invited me to treat him. Observing his condition, which was extremely dangerous, I declined to treat him. After repeated entreaties, I agreed to have him take one qian of pine resin every morning and evening. After five days, the foul pus decreased, and the sore healed flat. Continuing the previous dosage, he was completely cured in half a month.
There are countless cases of patients suffering from lung abscess (purulent infection of the lung) who found no effect from Linwu Shanshan's Xihuang Wan but were effective upon taking pine resin.
When my mother was fifty years old, she suffered from coughing, to which all medicines were ineffective. During the deep winter, she could not sleep peacefully. She encountered an old doctor who passed down a prescription consisting of four liang of poppy shell, three qian of Schisandra chinensis (Northern Five-Flavor Fruit), five qian of apricot kernels peeled and stir-fried until cooked, and two qian of calcined alum. These were ground into a fine powder, mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of sophora seeds. Each dose consisted of twenty pills, taken with white sugar dissolved in boiling water. After swallowing for a few days, the illness vanished as if lost, never to recur. My mother was born in the Jiachen year and is now eighty-six years old, looking as youthful as a child. Since then, those treated for coughing with this pill and fully recovered cannot be exhaustively listed in writing.
The second and third prescriptions mentioned above consist of common medicinal materials, yet they can cure such difficult and severe conditions, proving repeatedly effective upon trial. They are truly excellent prescriptions.
