Treats cholera with vomiting, diarrhea, and muscle cramps; various sudden acute conditions of Sha syndrome (sand poisoning); dizziness of the head and eyes; swelling and pain in the throat; bloody dysentery with abdominal pain; and acute strangury.
Cinnabar (Zhu Sha) (1.5 qian of the highest grade)
Borneol (Bing Pian) (3 fen)
Mint Ice (Bohe Bing) (2 fen)
Powdered Licorice Root (Fen Gan Cao) (1 qian, finely powdered)
Grind these four medicines together into a fine powder, divide into three doses, and take orally with warm boiled water, approximately once every half hour. If vomiting is severe, it should be taken immediately after vomiting subsides. If taken before vomiting occurs, there is a fear that the medicine will not have time to act before being vomited out. After taking the medicine, if warmth is applied to induce sweating, recovery will occur. If sweating occurs after the first dose, the subsequent two doses should still be taken. If the patient is not fully recovered after one full dose, another dose may be taken consecutively.
If vomiting and diarrhea have persisted for a long time, breath is faint, and there are signs of impending collapse, this medicine alone may not be able to reverse the condition; it is advisable to subsequently administer the Emergency Rescue Yang-Returning Decoction (Ji Jiu Hui Yang Tang).
Cinnabar can resolve toxins invading the heart, and due to its heavy and sinking nature, it is good at stopping vomiting, ensuring the medicine is not vomited out after ingestion. The Borneol in this formula should be made from refined Camphor (Zhang Nao). This is because Camphor naturally revitalizes the heart and promotes blood circulation throughout the body, and is particularly effective in eliminating pathogenic bacteria. Although its taste is slightly inferior, refining it into Borneol makes the taste more fragrant and pure. Furthermore, after refinement, its therapeutic power rises more easily to the brain to clear toxins there. Mint Ice is effective in resolving the toxin of Cholera (Hu Lie La), as frequently elucidated by Western scholars. Moreover, its pungent, acrid, and aromatic nature penetrates all orifices and reaches every part of the body, sweeping away toxins throughout. In addition, like Borneol, it possesses the property of releasing the exterior; taking it induces sweating, allowing internal pathogens to be expelled through sweat. Both are hot in nature but used in cool applications, making them suitable regardless of whether the disease is caused by cold or heat. Powdered Licorice Root is best at detoxifying, harmonizing the Middle Jiao (Spleen and Stomach) to stop vomiting and diarrhea, and harmonizing the tastes of Borneol and Mint Ice so that patients do not find them overly harsh or spicy.
The disease known as Cholera is referred to by Westerners as "Hu Lie La" (Cholera). Sometimes the air contains this toxin, which mixes with toxic gases generated from accumulated filth on the ground (as can be seen from the fact that outbreaks often start in unclean urban areas). It enters the lungs via respiration, transmits from the Lungs to the Pericardium (the fatty membrane connecting the heart and lungs), and then from the Pericardium to the Triple Burner (San Jiao). The Upper Jiao is the diaphragm below the heart; the Middle Jiao is the fatty membrane enveloping the Spleen and connecting to the Stomach; the Lower Jiao is the fatty membrane linking the intestines and enveloping the Kidneys. This represents the transmission between the Hand Jueyin and Hand Shaoyang organ systems. However, when the toxin enters the Triple Burner, if the patient's Middle Qi is robust with no gaps for the pathogen to exploit, it remains latent and inactive. Occasionally, due to overeating or damage to the Spleen and Stomach by cold and coolness, leading to a tendency toward vomiting and diarrhea, the toxin takes advantage of the deficiency to invade internally, lodging in the Stomach and Intestines. This causes obstruction of the upper and lower passages, resulting in chaotic turmoil with alternating vomiting and diarrhea. If vomiting and diarrhea persist, the toxin can enter the Heart from the Gastrointestinal tract and further ascend to the Brain, causing disease in both the brain marrow/nerves and the Heart. Consequently, the pumping force of the left atrium and the collecting force of the right atrium decrease abruptly, causing the blood vessels throughout the body to gradually cease flow and the entire body to become cold. This disease often occurs in autumn because this toxic gas is mostly generated during summer. During the heat of summer, the body sweats frequently, allowing some of the toxin latent in the Triple Burner to be excreted with sweat. When autumn cools and sweating stops, the toxin cannot exit, accumulates to an extreme, and then attacks inwardly taking advantage of the deficiency of the Spleen and Stomach. Therefore, treating this condition should primarily use detoxifying herbs, assist with herbs that support the Heart and invigorate blood, and use harmonizing herbs that stabilize the Middle Earth (Spleen/Stomach) and balance Yin and Yang as guides. Thus, this formula was devised and named Emergency Rescue Reviving Pill (Ji Jiu Hui Sheng Dan).
Appendix:
Letter from Yuan XX of Gucheng County, Zhili Province:
I do not know how you carefully refined the formula for Emergency Rescue Reviving Pill sent previously. Initially, when an epidemic broke out in Gucheng, I dispensed sixty doses according to the formula, all of which were effective immediately. Later, when an epidemic broke out in Zhengjiakou, a town outside Gucheng, I dispensed two hundred doses, all of which resulted in complete recovery.
