Treats sudden onset of eye diseases characterized by redness, swelling, and pain. Or the growth of pterygium (wing-shaped fleshy tissue), or the gradual formation of corneal opacity (cloudy film). Also treats cases where internal heat causes dryness and blurred vision.
Pengsha (5 qian) Mangxiao (3 qian; if the saltpeter is not bright, dissolve it in water, let it settle, and remove mud impurities)
Mix the above herbs with half a cup of cold water, grind until completely dissolved. Apply as eye drops, approximately thirty times a day. For chronic eye conditions, apply ten to twenty times a day. In winter, place the medicine bowl in hot water and wait until it is warm before application.
Treats eye diseases caused by heat pathogens.
Huanglian (2 qian) Grind into fine powder, mix with sesame oil to form a thin paste. Inhale frequently through the nose, about twenty to thirty times a day. Regardless of which eye is affected, both nostrils should be used for inhalation.
The optic nerve connects to the brain. If the brain suffers from inflammation due to heat, the pathology affects the nerves, inevitably leading to eye disease. Those who take oral medication without rapid effect do so because the drugs cannot reach the brain directly. I have realized this principle and utilize the nasal cavity as a shortcut to deliver the medicinal effect directly to the brain. For any eye redness and swelling, and all eye diseases caused by heat, there is no case that does not respond promptly.
Treats dilated pupils and visual fatigue, or the sensation of difficulty in seeing.
Yurou (Cornus officinalis fruit, 2 liang, pits removed completely) Yetaishen (Wild Panax ginseng, 6 qian) Baiziren (Biota seed, 1 liang, stir-fried) Xuanshen (Scrophularia root, 1 liang) Tusizi (Cuscuta seed, 1 liang, stir-fried)
Yanggan (Sheep liver, one piece, sliced and dried)
Grind all herbs into fine powder, bind with refined honey to make pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 3 qian per dose, washed down with boiled water, twice daily.
A woman, aged thirty, had dilated pupils and unclear vision, unable to perform needlework. Previous medications were ineffective; her pulse was large but weak. I prepared these pills for her, and after two months of consumption, she was fully cured.
Treats the same condition as above, but exacerbated by heat.
Yanggan (Sheep liver, one piece, sliced and sun-dried; in winter, slow-fire dried).
Grind this single ingredient into fine powder, mix with pig bile to form pills the size of tung tree seeds, coated with Zhusha (Cinnabar). Take 2 qian per dose, washed down with boiled water, twice daily.
Note: This formula would be more effective if made with Xiongdan (Bear bile). Fresh bear bile is hard to obtain inland, and dried bear bile is difficult to authenticate, so using pig bile is safer.
[Supplementary Formula] Humei Shenyingsan (Eyebrow-Protecting Divine Efficacy Powder) Treats all types of eye diseases. Whether caused by qi obstruction, fire obstruction, pterygium, corneal opacity, or pupillary displacement (strabismus/dyscoria). For conditions lasting less than ten years, efficacy is observed. Use Luganshi (Calamina) 1 liang, quenched seven times in tongbian (child's urine). Zhenzhu (Pearl) 2 pieces (larger than mung beans), placed inside Tongcao (Rice Paper Pith); when the pearl cracks, remove immediately. Xuehupo (Blood Amber) 3 fen, Zhen Meipian (Borneol) 2 fen. One each of Banliangqian, Wuzhuqian (commonly known as Madengqian/Mounting Iron Coin), and Kaiyuanqian, all quenched seven times in red vinegar. Grind all into fine powder, mix with milk, and apply to the eyebrows two to three times daily.
An unmarried maiden suffered from an eye disease for over a year with no medical success, gradually developing corneal opacity. I prescribed a formula; symptoms improved while taking it, but relapsed upon stopping. Later, she obtained this formula, prepared it correctly, and applied it several times. Symptoms lightened, and she was cured before finishing the dosage. Truly miraculous. Note: Adding Bohebing (Menthol) 2 fen would enhance efficacy.
Pupillary displacement (dyscoria) is the most difficult to treat, as it involves pathology of the optic nerve. Essentially, if the optic nerve has uneven tension (one side relaxed, one side contracted), the eye's optical axis deviates, causing unclear vision. If the disparity in tension is significant, pupillary displacement occurs. Treatment should focus on nourishing the optic nerve. This formula uses precious mineral and metal substances containing "baoqi" (precious energy/vitality). Substances with baoqi are excellent at nourishing human muscles and tendons, preventing decay. The optic nerve is the extension of the brain's qi-tendons connecting to the eye. Applying this medicine to the eyebrows utilizes Borneol's ability to open orifices and penetrate membranes, guiding the medicinal qi directly to the brain to nourish the optic nerve. Thus, optic nerve pathology heals spontaneously, along with pupillary displacement and all other eye diseases.
[Supplementary Formula] Simple Prescription for Sudden Onset Eye Disease. For eyes initially swollen and painful, use 3-4 qian of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and a large pinch of Yanshi (Salt). Pound together until pasty, wrap in thin cloth, dip in fresh well water, and wipe the upper and lower eyelids. Repeat dipping and wiping until the eyelids feel extremely hot. After wiping, wash the eyelids clean with warm water. Mild cases heal in one session; severe cases may require twice daily application. However, keep eyes tightly closed during application to prevent medicinal juice from entering the eyes.
[Supplementary Case] The Book of Jin records that Sheng Yan's mother went blind. He personally cared for her, feeding her by hand. Due to prolonged illness, she became subject to the whims of servants and was often whipped out of frustration. A maid, resentful, took silkworm grubs (Qilao/Larva of Scarabaeidae), roasted them with maltose, and fed them to the old lady. The mother found them delicious but suspected they were strange objects, hiding them secretly to show Sheng Yan. Upon seeing this, Sheng Yan embraced his mother and wept bitterly. His mother fainted and then revived. Her eyes suddenly cleared, and she was cured thereafter.
Note: Qilao lives in manure and soil, resembling silkworms (commonly called Digcan/Ground Silkworm), and is ubiquitous. The *Shennong Ben Cao Jing* states it treats ocular hyperplasia, blue opacities, and white membranes. Its efficacy in treating corneal opacity is evident. For internal cataracts, it should be fried in oil and ingested; for external opacities, its juice should be extracted and dropped into the eyes.
