Baimaogen (Rhizoma Imperatae): It has a sweet taste and cool nature. Its stem is hollow with nodes, making it most effective in venting stagnant heat from the Zang-Fu organs and expelling the toxicity of smallpox/rash outward. It is also effective in treating painful dysuria due to heat, oliguria due to heat, abdominal distension, and generalized edema. It can enter the Lung to clear heat, thereby calming cough and relieving asthma. Due to its sweet taste and the fact that fresh rhizomes yield much juice when chewed, it can enter the Stomach to nourish Yin, generate fluids, and relieve thirst. It treats hemoptysis, hematemesis, epistaxis, and hematuria caused by heat in the Lung and Stomach; however, fresh material must be used for significant efficacy. Baimaogen dug up before spring or after autumn has a sweet taste. When the plant is lush and growing vigorously, the taste becomes less sweet. Although it remains effective, it is far superior to dried material.
Maozhen (Emerging Shoot of Imperata): This refers to the shoot of the imperata grass. When first sprouting but not yet emerging from the soil, shaped like a large needle, its nature is the same as Baimaogen but possesses slightly stronger blood-breaking properties. For any ulcerated sore with pus that has not yet ruptured, boiling and consuming Maozhen will cause the sore to rupture: one needle breaks one opening, two needles break two openings.
[Attached Cases]
Case 1: A man nearing fifty years of age contracted the toxin of warm rash. His body was covered with macules and papules, presenting with intense heat in both the exterior and interior, accompanied by restlessness and irritability. The syndrome appeared excess, yet the pulse was deficient and sunken at all six positions. Repeated administration of clearing and resolving herbs proved ineffective; if the dosage of these clearing herbs was slightly heavy, it caused loose stools. He was prescribed six taels of fresh Baimaogen, boiled into a large bowl of decoction to be taken in one dose. His condition improved by more than half, and after a second dose, he recovered completely.
Case 2: A Western physician suffered from warm disease, characterized by headache, intense fever, and internal restlessness. He self-administered Western antipyretics. After ingestion, the fever temporarily subsided but soon recurred. His pulse seemed forceful but was only palpable in the superficial (Fu) and middle (Zhong) layers. He was prescribed four taels of fresh Baimaogen and one tael of Talcum (Huashi), boiled for three to four boils. The decoction was consumed, resulting in slight sweating over the whole body. One dose cured all symptoms.
Case 3: A woman nearing forty years of age suffered from deficiency-heat due to Yin deficiency. She gradually experienced difficulty in urination, which accumulated into edema. All diuretic medications administered were ineffective. Her pulse was rapid, approaching six beats per breath, and seemed forceful upon deep pressure. Upon inquiry, she reported frequent internal irritability. It was determined that her condition involved heat generated by Yin deficiency combined with excess heat, leading to urinary difficulty and subsequent edema. She was instructed to consume half a jin of fresh Baimaogen, boiled into two large bowls of decoction, drinking it slowly while warm as tea, ensuring continuous medicinal effect day and night. After five consecutive days, the heat subsided, urination became smooth, and the edema completely resolved.
