[General Verse] The functions of the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel and Lung Qi are like the sky, commanding and governing the circulation of Yang Qi in all channels on the back. In clinical practice, excess patterns are common while deficiency patterns are rare; regardless of excess or deficiency, the treatment principle is always to dispel cold.
When the back feels aversion to cold accompanied by fever, it is due to Cold pathogen invading the Taiyang channel (Taiyang Cold Damage). Ren Shen Bai Du San (Ginseng Decoction to Overcome Toxicity) is indicated.
Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 1 qian), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, 1 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 2 qian), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix, 2 qian), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 8 fen), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, 1 qian), Sha Shen (Glehniae Radix, 2 qian), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, 2 qian), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 3 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 3 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 slices), Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus, 2 pieces), Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, 3 qian).
The song states: Back coldness is often caused by external Cold pathogen; Chai Hu, Qian Hu, Qiang Huo, Du Huo, Zhi Ke, and Chuan Xiong gather here.
Ren Shen, Fu Ling, Jie Geng, Xing Ren together with Gan Cao, combined with Ge Gen, Da Zao, and Sheng Jiang to release the exterior and stabilize the righteous Qi.
(Note by Bo An: Gua Sha therapy can be used as an adjunct.)
When the back feels aversion to cold, or is accompanied by cold hands and feet, it is due to Yang deficiency in the Taiyang channel. Yuan Fang Fu Zi Tang (Original Formula Aconite Decoction) is indicated.
Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 3 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 3 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 3 qian), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 3 qian), Yun Ling (Poria, 3 qian), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 qian).
The song states: When the back is accompanied by chilly coldness in hands and feet, Ren Shen, Bai Zhu, Sheng Jiang, Fu Ling, Bai Shao, and Fu Zi are all present.
To recognize Yang deficiency requiring tonification of Qi, one may carefully adjust the dosage for administration.
When back pain radiates to the neck, or is accompanied by fever and aversion to cold, it is due to Wind-Cold pathogen invading the Taiyang channel. Ren Shen Bai Du San (Ginseng Decoction to Overcome Toxicity) is indicated.
Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 1 qian), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, 1 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 2 qian), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix, 2 qian), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 8 fen), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, 1 qian), Sha Shen (Glehniae Radix, 2 qian), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, 2 qian), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 3 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 3 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 slices), Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus, 2 pieces), Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, 3 qian).

Chai Hu, Qian Hu, Qiang Huo, Du Huo, Zhi Ke, Chuan Xiong, Gan Cao, Xing Ren, Jie Geng, Huang Qin, Sheng Jiang, Ge Gen, and Da Zao are all included.
When back pain radiates to the shoulders, or is accompanied by expectoration of phlegm and cough, it is due to Phlegm-Fluid retention in the Lung channel. Jia Wei Su Zi Tang (Modified Perilla Seed Decoction) is indicated.

The song states: Back pain connecting to the shoulders accompanied by cough; add Chai Hu, Qian Hu, Qiang Huo, Du Huo, Xing Ren, and Su Zi.
Da Zao, Zhu Ru, Zhi Ke, Jie Geng, Sheng Jiang, Huang Qin, and Fu Ling thoroughly eliminate stubborn phlegm so that saliva no longer adheres.
