6. On the first day of cold damage (Shanghan), the disease is in the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel. If the patient exhibits symptoms such as nausea, irritability, and a rapid pulse, it indicates that the pathogenic factor is rapidly transmitting to other channels. However, if no signs of Yangming (Yang Brightness) or Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) diseases are present, and the pulse is calm while the body feels harmonious, it signifies that the pathogen has not transmitted.
[Annotation] When cold damage occurs on the first day, the Taiyang channel is affected; on the second day, the Yangming channel is affected; on the third day, the Shaoyang channel is affected. This represents the normal sequence of transmission along the channels. If initially the patient strongly desires to vomit, feels irritable, and has a rapid and hurried pulse, it indicates that the pathogenic evil is abundant and transmitting, making resolution difficult. By the second and third days, if no symptoms of Yangming or Shaoyang diseases appear, the pulse remains calm, and the body suffers no distress, it indicates that the pathogenic evil is waning, not transmitting, and the disease is about to heal spontaneously.
7. Gegen Tang (Kudzu Root Decoction) treats exterior syndromes of the Yangming channel, characterized by a floating and long pulse. Symptoms include facial redness extending to the forehead and headache, fever with aversion to cold and absence of sweating, eye pain, nasal dryness, and restlessness during sleep.
[Annotation] When the Taiyang exterior syndrome has not yet resolved, and the disease transmits to the Yangming channel, the exterior pathogens of Taiyang become constrained, causing heat in the Yangming muscles and skin. This constitutes an exterior disease of the Yangming channel. Gegen Tang releases the exterior of the Yangming channel; thus, it is indicated for treating exterior diseases of the Yangming channel. A floating and long pulse is characteristic of the Yangming exterior syndrome. Facial redness extending to the forehead, headache, fever with aversion to cold and anhidrosis, eye pain, nasal dryness, and inability to rest peacefully are all manifestations of the Yangming exterior syndrome. Gegen Tang is used to resolve the pathogens affecting both the Taiyang and Yangming channels. For details, refer to the chapter on Yangming diseases.
8. Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) treats heat syndromes of the Yangming channel, presenting with irritability, thirst, and high fever. The pulse is long and surging (hong). There is sweating with persistent body heat. The patient does not fear cold but rather fears heat. If Shaoyang channel symptoms are also present, it should be combined with Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Chaihu Decoction).
[Annotation] When the Taiyang exterior syndrome has ceased, and the disease transmits to the Yangming channel without involving the Shaoyang channel or entering the fu organs, the heat deepens progressively, resulting in heat in both the interior and exterior. This constitutes a heat syndrome of the Yangming channel. Baihu Tang clears heat from the Yangming channel; thus, it is indicated for treating heat syndromes of the Yangming channel. A long and surging pulse is characteristic of the Yangming heat syndrome. Irritability, thirst, desire for drinking fluids, sweating with body heat, aversion to heat rather than cold, are all signs of Yangming channel heat syndromes. Baihu Tang is used to resolve the heat affecting both the exterior and interior of the Yangming channel. If the Yangming syndrome persists and transmits to the Shaoyang channel, it is still considered a Yangming heat syndrome. "Combining Chai" refers to combining Baihu Tang with Xiaochaihu Tang to treat Yangming channel heat syndromes accompanied by Shaoyang channel wiry pulses, alternating chills and fever, bitter taste in the mouth, deafness, dizziness, vomiting, and pain in the chest and hypochondrium.
