(Chan Hou Feng, Entangling Wind of the Throat)。
(Xionghuang Jiedu Wan, Realgar Detoxification Pill)
(Chuihou Qibao San, Blowing into Throat Seven Treasures Powder)
1. The lips and mouth belong to the Spleen channel, while the tongue belongs to the Heart channel. Sores and erosion in the mouth and tongue are caused by deep accumulation of Heat (Re). A bland taste in the mouth indicates harmonious Spleen Qi; foul breath indicates Stomach Heat. Overflowing sour taste without consuming five flavors indicates Liver Heat invading the Spleen; bitter taste indicates Heart Heat invading the Spleen; sweet taste indicates self-exuberance of Heat in the Spleen channel itself; pungent taste indicates Lung Heat invading the Spleen; salty taste indicates Kidney Heat invading the Spleen. "Wooden Tongue" refers to a swollen, stiff tongue that is not painful; "Double Tongue" refers to swelling under the tongue resembling a small tongue; "Tongue Swelling" refers to overall enlargement of the tongue. "Lip Swelling" refers to painful, thickened lips; "Lip Sores" refer to lips that are swollen, ulcerated, and form sores; "Tight Silkworm Lip" refers to lips that are tight, shrunken, dry, and cracked. All the above conditions belong to Heat accumulation in the Heart, Spleen, and Stomach channels. If onset is sudden with severe redness, swelling, and pain, it is mostly Excess Heat (Shi Re), suitable for using Liangge San (Cooling the Diaphragm Powder) or Zhizi Jinhua Tang (Gardenia and Golden Flower Decoction) to urgently purge extreme heat, which can lead to immediate recovery. If the disease has persisted for a long time with pale color and white sores, occurring intermittently with pain or no pain, it mostly belongs to Deficiency Heat (Xu Re), suitable for using Qingxin Lianzi Yin (Clear Heart Lotus Seed Drink) or Zhibai Siwu Tang (Anemarrhena, Phellodendron and Four Substances Decoction), combining tonification with clearing heat. For those who do not recover after long-term use of cooling medicines, Qiwei Dihuang Tang (Seven-Ingredient Rehmannia Decoction) should be taken cold to guide Fire back to its source. If ineffective or worsening, adding Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) can lead to immediate recovery.
2. Wind-Heat in the chest and diaphragm causes sore throat. If the pathogenic factor is strong, it generates unilateral or bilateral Ru E (tonsillar hypertrophy/angina). Extreme Heat causing swelling and obstruction is called Hou Bi (Throat Obstruction), characterized by difficulty speaking and breathing. Profuse phlegm and saliva swirling around the throat with sound, along with internal and external swelling and obstruction, is called Chan Hou Feng (Entangling Wind of the Throat). Both Hou Bi and Chan Hou Feng are critical conditions; if they ulcerate but remain obstructed without pus discharge, it is a ominous sign.
[Note] Wind-Heat above the chest and diaphragm leads to sore throat. If Wind-Heat pathogens are strong, they generate unilateral or bilateral Ru E, which appear as high swellings on both sides of the epiglottis resembling milky moths, hence the name. Extreme Heat causes swelling and obstruction, preventing swallowing of liquids, difficulty in speech, and blocked respiration, known as Hou Bi. If extreme Heat is accompanied by profuse phlegm, phlegm and saliva swirl in the throat, causing sounds in the throat, with internal and external swelling and obstruction preventing liquid intake, known as Chan Hou Feng; these are all critical diseases. Treatment includes oral medication, insufflation, or acupuncture. Recovery occurs if pus and blood are discharged upon ulceration. If there is no pus or blood discharge after ulceration and obstruction persists with inability to swallow liquids, death ensues.
Ruyi Shengjin Ding (Ruyi Victory Gold锭剂), Xionghuang Jiedu Wan (Realgar Detoxification Pill)
2. For sore throat, use Xiaodu Liangge San (Disinfect and Cool the Diaphragm Powder); for unilateral or bilateral Ru E, cure via bloodletting at acupoints; for Hou Bi and Chan Hou Feng, use Ruyi Shengjin Ding; for urgent attack on Phlegm-Heat, use Xionghuang Jiedu Wan. In cases of coma, locked jaw, and inability to swallow medicine, insufflate or灌 (irrigate) through the nose to pass the throat gate. After inducing vomiting or purgation, treat according to symptoms. For ulcers, apply Zhenzhu San (Pearl Powder) for improvement.
[Note] For initial sore throat and swelling, Xiaodu Liangge San is suitable, composed of Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), and Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas). For unilateral or bilateral Ru E, prick Shaoshang (LU11) to bleed: left side for left lesions, right side for right lesions, both sides for bilateral lesions. For Hou Bi and Chan Hou Feng, if the condition is not severe or resembles Taiyang syndrome, take Ruyi Shengjin Ding, composed of equal parts of Liu Huang (Sulfur), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizome), La Cha (Tea Leaves), Huo Xiao (Saltpeter), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Sheng Chuan Wu (Raw Aconiti Radix), and Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), ground into powder, mixed with natural juice of Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) to form tablets weighing one qian each. Take by grinding in Bohe Tang (Mint Decoction); severe cases may take three doses consecutively. If phlegm and saliva are congested, with internal and external throat swelling blocking liquid intake in a critical state, use Xionghuang Jiedu Wan, composed of water-purified Xionghuang (Realgar) and fine powder of Yujin (Curcumae Radix), 2.5 qian each, plus 14 plump Ba Dou Ren (Crotonis Semen) kernels, slightly de-oiled until powdery, mixed evenly, formed into pills like mung beans with vinegar paste. Take seven pills with clear tea water; recovery follows when bowels move and phlegm is vomited. In cases of coma, locked jaw, and inability to swallow, dissolve ten pills in vinegar, administer intranasally following methods for Stroke, inducing vomiting or purgation for recovery, followed by symptomatic treatment. If healed but throat ulcers persist, applying Zhenzhu San (Pearl Powder) heals them.
Chuihou Qibao San (Blowing into Throat Seven Treasures Powder)
3. Qibao San (Seven Treasures Powder) treats various throat conditions, containing Ya Zao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus), Quan Xie (Scorpio), Xionghuang (Realgar), Peng Sha (Borax), Bai Fan (Alumen), and Dan Fan (Chalcanthite). Grind finely like dust, take an amount equivalent to "one zi" (approx. 0.5-1g), insufflate into the affected area for miraculous efficacy.
[Note] Various throat conditions refer to sore throat, unilateral/bilateral Ru E, Hou Bi, and Chan Hou Feng. Qibao San consists of Huo Xiao (Saltpeter), Ya Zao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus), Jin Xie (Scorpio), Xionghuang (Realgar), Peng Sha (Borax), Bai Fan (Alumen), and Dan Fan (Chalcanthite).
